The reason there would only be held one mittens a year is so that most of us can gather in one place. If we seperated it off into two mittens then we would be split and wouldn't get to meet as many AGSers. If mittens were to stay in one place every year, two mittens might make sense. But because every year it take place in a different AGS dominated area, it only makes sense that there would be one. You simply don't have to go to each one. Does this bar you from not being able to get together on your own with some AGSers? No. Gloves is a sacred event, just talk to some people and gather your forces and a Gloves is born.

What we really really need to get the ball rolling is people with facts and figures on money of a camping site or other lodgings. Who thinks they can host it, and from that list we should pick where to go for Mittens2004. The east coast is probably most desirable for attracting a better mix of AGSers who aren't in the USA or in the Americas. However, if we only find people in other areas who are able to host it elsewhere, we will have to make do.

So instead of people posting where they live, where they can go, and where they prefer. We first just need people who can post with information. And then, with that information we can gather intelligence as to what the general concensus is on where Mittens will be hosted.

Do has anyone looked anything up and have some hard facts?

I collected an odd assortment of pens and pencils and other useless junk, that I would use to build armies. They were essentially my army men/legos type of thing. Sounds wierd now...but I had a blast with them. I've still managed to keep my favorite ones, even at the insistence of my mother to get rid of them. I got rid of a good bit, though, just to keep her happy, and so she'll give me money while I'm away at college.

I'm a pack rat, though. So it's easy for me to collect things I never intend to use ever.

Writers Block is usually caused because you've writtens something that doesn't lead to anything else. Writing should flow naturally, if it's blocked it's because of something you have already written. Look back and scrap something you're not sure you like, or you're  not sure you can bring to an interesting conclusion to.

Sometimes, though, you just need a break from your story. Get out for a little while can be good. Try a freewriting session, too (Which is just writing as fast as you can, whatever you want. It feels good to get some of your ideas out in rough form, and it makes you feel like you've accomplished something).

General Discussion / Re:Occupation

I work at Publix, an East Southern chain of Grocery stores. I am currently a bagger, but not really. I'm just not an official cashier for a few more weeks. I've been working at this job for over two years, and while the pay isn't the best, they work around my schedule. And whether I'm at college or home, I have a job. The hours, during the summer when I'm the available anytime, are long and can range from morning to night (anyone who has worked retail knows how this is), and I don't have a weekend to speak of. I enjoy the job, though. They've treated me well, given me regular raises, and it's a fun atmosphere to work in (no matter which store I'm in).

So I am currently happy with my job, it's something I might consider doing long term, if my Computer Science degree doesn't pay off...or I don't win the lotto.

What about a Mama game?

But seriosly folks....good job DG. It was interesting. Can't say I have any real interesting ideas about it...but it makes you think. If it, at least, does that, even if you don't reach a conclusion, than I feel it's a success.

This game was much better than what I expected, I almost didn't play it until I read Grundislavs review about it on sylphers new AGS news site. The puzzles required a bit of thinking, and the graphics were decent. The voice acting was great! Good job, to all those who contributed!

Vargtass - yeah, I had realised it later on, so I was thinking of making a a gag out of it and saying, to each non-adventure game made, that it was the first one made. Thanks for blowing it, though. JERK! hehe.

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Re:New AGS?
Wed 23/07/2003 18:53:40
So.......any links to this new AGS? Is that it's real name? Anyone want to contribute the least tidbit towards THIS topic, I know I'd like to know more. I mean, it's not everyday you get two AGS engines. It'll probably be inferior, if it really is in production, but only because AGS has had a good couple years head start.

At any rate, I have the game, so if you'd like to have it, I'm sure you could always PM me and I  would be happy to send it via e-mail, after you give me your address. Or, if I'm on-line I could DCC it on IRC or send it through AIM.

Get this idea! There will not be a newbie forum and an oldie forum. It's going to be an oldie forum and a general mass forum. The oldies won't just ignore this forum once they have their own forum. And if they want to share something with the AGS community as a whole then they'd put it on the general mass forum. If they just want the oldies to know about it, then the oldies forum. It isn't that complicated.

I can see both sides for keeping it secret and allowing people to read it. So I won't argue either way.

Just because there might be an exclusive board, though, doesn't mean oldies can't partake in the boards for the general masses. And anyway, your responses, misterx and undergroundling, show another reason this could be useful. The oldie forums can be seen as a goal, so that those who wish to enjoy the company of the elite (I'm not going to lie, it's elitism, no way around it), will respect the rules and if posts are well thought out and such, may very well be able to go to those forums too.

I'm for this idea.

General Discussion / Re:Yufster HATE Thread.
Tue 15/07/2003 20:02:35
Ehem...There are several places I could take quotes from and argue points but I'll just explain things in a general mish mush.

Helm's intention wasn't to hurt Yufster. I don't agree with his approach. But look at what he's already done, he's brought an issue up, bluntly, that needed to be brought up. Should he have used more tact? Been nicer? Maybe, but the truth is, now there are around sixty posts in a seven hour period (which for a message board is quite a number in that amount of time, considering some threads don't even get 20). Let's look at this in a more positive light, shall we. This conversation needed to happen a long time ago.

Indeed, this is a community, and your welcome to have fun and chat. That's what this gen gen forum is for. However, in the past few years this has been the main focus for new people comming to ags and us oldies a like. There used to be a time when most of the posts were directed towards AGS gen. The gen gen forum isn't supposed to be AGS's main focus. Chris shouldn't have to waste so much of his bandwith here. The focus should be in the tech forums, the AGS gen forums, the critics lounge, and even the competitions forum.

This is aimed at newbies and oldies alike. Some of us post too much silly useless crap. I've been guilty of it. Most everyone has been guilty of it, one time or another. And silly crap IS welcome. It's just not welcome to a point where it seems you are crapping more than eating (in other words spending more time conversating than contributing, bad analogy, I know).

When I first joined here, I don't remember when. I downloaded the engine, looked at the forums real quick, and went right into making my game. I maybe posted three times in three months while working on my game. I didn't allow myself to use mIRC until I had finished my game. This has been my contribution to AGS. Does it matter if you like my game or not? No! Are there other ways of contributing? Yes!

People need to realise, this community IS great. BUT, this community isn't here just to be community. It's here for Adventure Games, and people who wish to make/play them. If you want to chat there are tons of communities that are aimed just for that.

Helm's post, while harsh, and a bit too much, did exactly what he set out to do. I am sorry Yufster is singled out, I'm sure if she's intelligent she'll realise what Helms post is for what it is.

General Discussion / Re:Yufster HATE Thread.

I think Helm is just exagerating. He doesn't hate Yufster. He doesn't want to dismember her. If anyone honestly thinks that Helm is completly serious in his post, than they need to reread it a couple of times. It's mean...I'll agree. But I won't tell him he's wrong, because his point is valid to everyone. We need to think before we post, even comments that we just throw out there and never consider to be offensive, might rub the person the wrong way.

Completed Game Announcements / Re:Apprentice!
Tue 15/07/2003 06:03:44
I'd like to say that the animation, backround, character sprites were all very nice. The dialog was decent. I loved how you spent the time to make a reply to every click on an object look/talk/take/use (it's one of my pet peeves when people don't do this).

Most of the puzzles were easy, but I must say that...(and I'll use spoilers DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T Completed the game, and don't care to know a few hints or answers)

Spoiler
The cheese puzzle was a bit far fetched, even for an adventure game. I would have never thought of it, had I not just gone through my inventory one at a time, seeing what I could do.

This is not to say that some of the puzzles weren't good. I liked how you had to clean the grinder, but couldn't take the dishtowel, it kind of closed my mind to the dishtowel until I was desperate. I liked the the stool and the broom combination to get the saddle.

But the cheese puzzle just didn't agree with me.

I think you did a very nice job with this game, and look forward to future games on your part.

I enjoyed it until the end. LGM, might not have done what you asked of him, but don't let us know. Do you see professional magazines/newspapers do this?

On the whole it was good. A few grammar problems here and their, and I felt the other engines that you discussed could have been analiyzed a bit more in depth.

-MillsJROSS

EDIT - just wanted to point out my bad grammar in the above post. I'll leave it there, as I think it's ironically funny, and unintentional. Laugh!

If you really want a sprite then go to the trouble of going in the game to the desired sprite, print screen and take the sprite that is desired.

Or just ask the creator...just realise that if you do the above, the creator might very well be quite pissed off.

You're going to have to elaborate a little more for some help. Will the guy teleport right after he answers or perhaps after he uses a teleporter machine. (It would require two different codes). As far as the last part of your question, I've never played the newest Demo AGS, so I am currently, unable to answer you at the moment.

gonzalazj - we already have a help file and I don't see how that's too much different than the tech forum. Anyone who wanted to help people will look at those forums when ever they get the chance. When people go on to IRC they go to relax and hang out with their buddies, not necessarily to answer questions. I would deem it uneeded(sp?).

I see nothing wrong with the rules. For the most part we, the ops, won't ban you unless (before a warning) you don't listen to us when you're breaking the rules to an annoying point. And as Annie (One_Thinking_Gal) said just because we don't say anything doesn't mean we aren't there reading what's written. I go back and forth through IRC, so sometime I don't pay attention to the conversation. Our lives aren't dedicated to make sure everyone follows the rules. However, this is something you can do. I usually am on the computer if I'm using IRC, so just PM me, and the noise should make me see what's happening. I can't speak for all ops, though, so perhaps we should make a rule that if your an op and you are away from the system, then change your nick to nameaway. So that people know who to PM.

In the engine, in Room Editor, Settings, you'll see yellow lines. Four, one on top, bottom, left, right. You can move these lines by clicking and draging them to a specified place in your room. Then...go to your interactions editor. Walks off whatever direction you wanted...double click and choose Player Go to A different room at specific coordinates (or just Player goes to a different room, if you don't care where he is in the next room). Specify the room number and the x and y location of the next room (if that's what you chose). Hope this answers your question.

Chrille - you mean they didn't even contact you to tell you they were putting your game in the magazine?

You deserve it...althought I wouldn't say the first sight of the game was that bad.
