General Discussion / Re:What are you reading?
Tue 06/05/2003 16:44:54
I'm re-reading the Douglas Adams Hitchiker series. I bought the mini-series, and after seeing it, I had felt the urge to re-read the books. I'm almost done, and my next books are probably going to be one by Pratchett, and another from Brian Jacques (who writes novels aimed for children but I think they're still enjoyable, and his Redwall books are what got me hooked on reading). I also plan on reading Stupid White Men, but Micheal Moore. And then I'll probably read some sci-fi fantasy book my dad recomended the other day (which I unfortunaltly, don't know the name of it, and I'll have to wait until he is done with it). I kind of fell out of reading while at school. I started out strong with Sir Connan Doyle's books on Sherlock Holmes (which I have yet to complete the whole of his works, so you can put that on the list as well). And only ready 8 or so Pratchett novels from August to now, and Franny and Zooey by Salinger. That reminds me, I have to re-read Atlas Shrugged, by Rand. That should keep me busy for a while.

Well basically I'm asking, is there a way to put an on and off switch globally that affects the whole of the game. It deosn't necessarily apply to objects being on or off. If, for example, I did an action that affected other rooms and characters, You would turn the switch On, so to speak, so that the game recognizes you've done something. Then whatever you need to show what has been done detects the now on button and will do whatever you tell it to.

Ex. I kick a door that somehow affects all other aspects in the game.

I'm sure there is already someway in which to do what I am asking, I just don't know if it's been simplified.

I'm not getting such a negative vibe from this game. I think it'll be good. It still is an adventure game. The first one had some action, and it was still great. And for the most part, I think Lucasarts is trying to sell it to other people, because they know we'll buy it no matter. If it isn't good, oh well, we have plenty of games here, to keep us entertained for a while.

I'm not sure if this is even implemented already. So many changes have been made, it's hard to keep track. Here's my suggestion/question:

Is there a way to lets say when something is done you have a one line global script command that set globalInt(#,1/0)       On/off
So then we could have a script that enables us, if something has been set on, to affect the whole game. Ex: You press a button (which would turn the global function on) and then whenever you enter a room that is affected by the button, it detects whether this function has been set on not, and then acts accordingly (such as turning on/off an object).

Now this might already be implemented, as said, but I was thinking today, that when I get my computer back together in a couple of days (as I am currently using my parents) what functions I could really make good use of with AQ2. This is just one of the ideas I had, because I usually find some backwoods way to get everything to work similar to that in the end.

I've never used smileys. I just figure that anyone who's known me long enough, knows that any insult towards them isn't serious.

Perhaps, as an even more useful roger, you could make it so we could start porgrams using him. We'd type in something like "Roger open/start (File Name)." A person could then could tell Roger where the program is located. Making him mega useful!

I asked to revoke the IP's I gave, and told them it was a big misunderstanding, before they got kicked, and someone told me that I didn't have to worry about it. I wish I was there when they were kicked, though. But I'm glad to see that we can fight these nasty people taking over our page.

No matter how nice they were after the fact, they went in, messed with roger, and took over our #agsfun. They were hostile without provocation or reason. Ignored our pleading that roger was not the roger they thought it was, and was in fact a bot. Yes, once they understood they made a grave error, they were good enough to stay around and see if they could "help" CJ fix his bot (which might have entailed, gaining our trust, and attacking CJ somehow). I felt it was my duty to report them to the feds, before they finally listened to us, and understood what they did. They disobeyed the server rules, and were punished because of it. Justice has been done.

Very smart m0ds, use that as the excuse as to not playing the game. Intelligent indeed!

General Discussion / Re:new one hour games..
Thu 24/04/2003 02:02:49
I think a good one hour game is a good idea. It is easier to see if people abide by the hour rule in irc, yes. However, usually everyone breaks the one hour rule anyway, so it's not like it matters. The goal is one hour, so try to stick with it, but if you feel you can't do it in an hour, then three hours is fine too. Give me a couple weeks and I'll join in a competition, but right now I'm swamped with work that I should be attending to now.

I'll just say that SQ is the game to get, as has already been said.  It's my favorite series and they were the first games I made sure worked on my new system. While it did take a bit of tweaking I got all six in the series to work just fine.  You do need to slow down your system, yes, but not for all of the games. You rarely need to do so with the first three games, just if you play an arcade sequence. SQ4 is the one with the most timing issues, and their annoying, but if your a big fan, they you'll tough it out. SQ5 is pretty good, and SQ6 has only one timing issue.

General Discussion / Re:I HATE my dad
Mon 21/04/2003 06:49:03
Hate's a bit strong of a word.  I don't think you honestly mean it, or you don't honestly know what hate really means.

My dad signed on as a member of the AGS community just to tell me to read my e-mail, in which he threatened to throw away all my legos and other child playthings if I didn't do a few things I've been putting off. Although, I'd be distraught if my legos were destroyed, I wouldn't hate him because of it.  There was one time I had written about sixty pages of an ongoing fantasy novel, and when transfering computers he forgot to tranfer some of the word documents.  I don't hate him for it. He's my dad, and, for the most part, he has to do some pretty horrible things for me to actually hate him.

Speaking of Red Dwarf, I got the first 2 series on DVD for my B-day a while back! Whoo!

I also think the eight one is funny, but I think I know why it got such a bad rep. In most of the show the characters are isolated and really free to do whatever they please. In eight they're freedom is revoked, and they now take orders. It kind of makes you feel that after all those episodes nothing has really happened. You want the characters to have advanced to some degree. But yes, the writing is quite clever, and I think it was very funny, it's just different.

The reason why Kochanski replaced Rimmer, isn't poor writing, it's more that the actor didn't want to do the rest of the seventh season. But he's back in eight, so all is good.

I, too, was kind of angry with the switching of Holly's. I liked the female Holly, but I loved the original Holly.

I can't wait for the movie to come out...and there is some rumor of maybe making a ninth season of the show, but I don't know if they'll be able to do it after a five year gap. Although, I'm sure BBC will buy it, anyway.
