For those who play the demo, here is a more convenient link than the one provided in the original post : http://gabarts.blogspot.fr/2012/06/lucasfilm-games-avventura-grafica.html

EXHIBIT #21: CRUISE FOR A CORPSE (1991)

My box looks different, it has the dead body outline on a black background, looking just like what you see in the intro

I keep being baffled by how Sierra was omnipresent in the videogames market, and yet they eventually collapsed. How did they not end up being Valve?

A simple tip for the latest iteration: increase the ambient light. It should still lok atmospehric, but much less "dark-for-no-reason-and-it-hurts-the-eyes".

The new version is much better. You avoided most of the beginners' mistakes. You made the head go up and down: that's very good.
I'd say now you need to polish it up:
- when the feet are in the extreme positions, it looks as if the leg takes a strange shape. Maybe you need to move around a few pixels to "simulate" a leg with even width in every frame.
- still when the feet are in extreme positions, they should stay flat and horizontal. In particular, the foot goinf forward should slightly point up.
- the shoulder should move forth and back one or two pixels along with the arm.

I only just realized that the picture above is perfectly visible on my screen, but almost all black on any other screen. I got my screen with very good contrast from a former graphic designer who no longer needed it. I'll reupload an image with higher contrast asap.

You're doing a great job, don't worry.
Same here. Your drawings are very clean and you have a good sense of colors, so everything looks polished up enough, and that's what matters.

Make it a 2d game and draw backgrounds and sprites.

So that would be a demake rather than a remake.

The game from 1998? Even before considering legal issues... How on earth would you do a remake of a full-motion video game with several actors, hi-resolution 3D backgrounds, all the make-up and costumes and stuff?

the first image is very pretty. I like the second one much less. I think it's because the lighting in the first one is very alive, while the second one is very flat and dull. It's a night scene and the light sources are: 1) the luminescent background, 2) the enlighted windows and decorative lights. Yet, none of them seem to light the tress in any way : the trees don't even look cylindrical. Actually it's almost like you did some pillow shading all over the scene.

I think that's the biggest issue with the second scene while, then again, the first scene looks gorgeous.

Same as before: Considering you've already modelled everything in 3D, you should render the scene with any badass renderer instead of the basic ambiant-light-with-no-occlusion renderer. There will be an immediate boost in the scene realism, with absolutely no effort.

Still, the person who made the most important remark was Ryan Timothy ;)

Nice cosplay. I ususally don't like cosplay. But this one doesn't force it, it keeps it simple while being very nerdy and true to the original. :)

This discussion is very interesting, not only because of the Tim Schafer topic, but also because it's a perfect illustration of the gap between the artist and his/her creation.

You can be a very good comedian but not funny at all in real life, insecure, and forcing it. You can be a great painter and have silly annyoing obsessions in real life. You can be a great illustrator but maybe if people knew you, then they'd know that your drawings look good because you just avoid drawing what you can't draw. Etc. The examples are countless.

In the past, it was close to impossible for people to meet the artists that made the creations they love. You'd never meet Beethoven. Maybe if you did, his personality would spoil his music for you.

You could even extend that to politicians: In modern days, people tend to distrust a man/woman just because they saw a 10 seconds video of him where he/she displays an overinflated ego, or where they tell a tiny lie about something insignificant. In the past, the public would only see those politicians during pulic meetings, giving a speech. But nowadays, because they've become so intimate to them, people would think: "what a dick, I'd never trust this guy"...And they tend to forget that those politicians can still have strong moral convictions, they're just humans. Like Benjamin Franklin, or Ghandi, or Mandela: they were probably dicks at home (especially to their wives), but still, it's not what defines their creations.

Around 0:55, that kind of "space tube" entering interdimensional/hyperspace/whatnot reminds me a lot of Dune. Immediate dream.

Two problems.

1) AGS script is too slow in tight loops required for per-pixel processing

2) AGS does its game logic *after* userland scripts have run. This means thats it's impossible to edit the current sprite because the game logic might change it at the end of the frame.

Not really problems imo! :D
1) If you look at my "Easymirrors" module (which is horribly, horribly slow) you can still manage to do perpixel processing on at least 1/4 of a 320x200 background without dropping below 40fps.

2) Who cares? ;) OK, I concede that the light source might be off a few pixels if the object has moved. No big deal. It will be up to the scripter to work with the limitations of the module! For static objects in the background it would already look deadly.
#1917
Who's up to try reproducing that kind of algorithm in AGS with me? Even a simplified version of it would be deadly. Imagine your player carrying a torch around!!!!11!!!!

Quote from: Monsieur OUXXThis is where I should post my original "Cruise for a Corpse" box if I weren't so lazy.
Don't worry. It'll be here eventually. :)

Yes. But will it be in its original language? ;)

concept : cassiebsg (it's the only one really that gives a challenge to the player to reach a distant area, while not making it seemingly impossible to reach the goal area; it gives visual clues on how to reach it).
execution : ben304 (even though gingersnap's bg is gorgeous)
playability: gingersnap (because it has all those potentially clickable areas)

EDIT: for eye candy, this is the background in action : VIDEO
