General Discussion / Re: Heath Ledger is dead.

I called my buddy to wish him a happy birthday and he tells me this story.  Wow just crazy.  And another good friend of mine has been anxiously awaiting the new Batman film.  I expect them to dedicate that movie or the other film he finished recently to his life, they're editing it into the opening scene right this very minute...or at least they probably should be.

Really liked this guy, very sad to hear that he died.

The Sennheiser HD 280 headphones MesaBlue mentioned are nice. They have good isolation and good tone. However, you have to treat them nicely, or else I've heard that the place where the cable connects to the headphones can break.

If you don't care about isolation (like if you don't record with a mic, needing isolation from the monitored signal) you could look into open-backed headphones. The electrostatic headphones sound incredible (of course, they are more expensive).

Yes they will break if you are careless with them.  They give you instructions on how to replace the parts that wear or break from excessive guitar gymnastics... tee hee.

I'm sure Alliance was referring to the actual program's look itself and not the website. I haven't seen anything on AGS 3.0... time to check it out!

Sorry, I was referring to the post by auriond, and not alliance.  Should have quoted him there...sorry bout that.
"Another point, which I hate to make, is that their website looks a lot neater than ours."

That's what I was referring to.

This is what I have, and they work great as a dynamic, closed headphone.  They're not canceling.

Had them for a few months now and they're superb, no troubles so far.

Here's the same product at Musician's Friend -

I lost fifty-seven songs and a conceptual project to go along with it once.  I had the entire project typed up as this lengthy story (which was partially salvaged and became Novellice) to go with it and instead of a fire or something - it was caused by moving a partition.  Dumb mistake.  The machine quit responding during the move and so I had to restart.  It didn't recover and there was nothing I could do.  All my files were still there, but the FAT was either lost, damaged, or altered to where there was no way the OS could recognize the data.  Funny thing is, there was one guy apparently capable of fixing it, he lived in Sweden, and charged upwards of 10 thousand dollars for the repair (which I couldn't afford back then).

So did you lose your hard drive only, or did you lose the entire machine?  That sucks either way, but thank god you made backups.  If I recall correctly, CD burners were pretty new back when I lost my data...though I had one and should have made backups, but it would have taken a good 25 discs.  My present project backs up onto 18 DVDs. ^^

I too tried Wintermute, ages past.  I see it's improved greatly since.  Last I tried the software, it would crash often during my work.

I would also agree that their community seems rather quiet compared to the AGS community.  As for the AGS website, hasn't it been the same layout since 2003, maybe before then?  I think it's fine (minus broken links, if there are any still? that's not very good), maybe it could use a makeover at some point...but not for the sake of competing with WM, that'd be silly.

But seriously, the community is the main thing that interests me about AGS - and kept me here for all these years, even just to play all of your awesome games ^_^ and WM just doesn't seem to have that right now.

PS: There is no reason to have to know musical notes. I don't know them either. Just play it by ear, it's fairly easy especially on computers to be able to tell when two or more notes work together, and when they don't :)

I'm not saying, that you have to learn music - sure trial and error is fine, but it does take longer (which seems kind of pointless, because it's easy to learn the notes -there are only 12!) and some people are tone deaf and really can't tell when things are not meshing, no matter how hard they try.  Yet, even people who have trouble hearing pitch or dissonance can put music together with some knowledge of music.  Not saying you have to learn it, but it sure helps.  Carry on! =]

I do like this background - things I also noted in the blood:

Brighten the blood up in the spotlights, and add some value to the blood on the wall and door to give it dimension of spatter/smearing.

I like the pipes how you have them.  The portholes seem a bit high.

Cool background ^^

* Oh, and I really like what Darth did to the lighting =] you should consider using that, it's smexy.

I don't think you're far from it from the sample picture - but hey it's grass!  I mean it looks like grass, and it's pretty close to what you're going for in my opinion, nicely done.

It seems to me that the first part you created, moved up a half step in pitch from the last version?  I'm not positive but it sounds like it, and the new rhythm part in the background, the structured part of the piece - well it's not meshing well with the first part at all.

I suggest moving the rhythm part down 1/2 step in pitch, or up 1/2 step in pitch.  Either direction will align those pitches to match up better with the first part you have going.  If it sounds dissonant too much, it will really be hard to listen to.  Sometimes it's ok, but to my ear at least, in this instance I'd suggest changing it.

For this version here - sure ancient temple would probably work as well.   Maybe a forest if it was a really dark and evil forest ^_^

I suppose the first thing to do, is bang out some kind of structure.  To me, aside from the very intro, it sounded a bit jumbled and random.  That's ok, but maybe just give it a little more structure and you'll be fine.  Not knowing music makes it harder...

As for in game, I think this makes nice maze music, or just something mysterious maybe.  You'd be surprised where a piece of music will work, but often times it takes having a scene or mood in front of you to really get the idea to click.

I think though, that you did an ok job, you should try to write another piece of music.

Well here's a little tip, if you go over your lines more and more, and they're wrong to begin with, it only makes them stand out even more.  If you make a mistake, do NOT go over it again and again, it doesn't make it better.

When I first started drawing, I would lay a few lines down, maybe a skeleton of what I wanted, and then be afraid to continue...don't be, add more, if it looks bad so what, it'll get better over time etc etc.  Just keep drawing, it takes time and experience.

Think of things to add, like a clock, a bookcase, a fireplace, a giraffe, anything.  Maybe look at some photos to help with drawing things like beds and windows, but keep at it.

Another thing, you said you tried various things that turned out bad? Did you spend two hours on something that didn't turn out? Maybe you should show that instead of this 'outline'?

Anyway good luck.

Oh great you found it ^_^ The next thing I was going to suggest would have been Go-Bots....god help you if it had been Go-Bots :p lolz.  Anyway, cool, glad you found em.

Critics' Lounge / Re: Beach apartment C and C

I like what you have going here.  It's a nice beach apartment scene.  Maybe on the left, where there is just the painting/picture hanging, it seems a bit empty.  You could throw a second couch in there?  You don't have to, but that's the first thing I noticed was the space (since you moved the couch over ^^).

Other than that there's not much to say at this stage of development, looks promising.

woot...so it'll be like Casino Royale but...without guns? :p Just playing with ya.

I think he looks really good, clothes too.  But honestly my biggest pet peeve with 3d characters isn't their looks, it's always their movements that seem so - not human.  So hopefully you'll animate the chap to seem somewhat realistic.  He looks great already, maybe you should give him a deck of cards folded and shaped like a gun? ^_^

Heh.  Hey it's looking really good now that something is in the room.  Must admit I like how it looks, a lot, nice job.  Adding anything else? maybe a rug?  The plant I see, what's the item on the table supposed to be?

Just because you mentioned Transformers...I'm going to ask, have you seen the Transformers movie (the animated one from 1986)?  If not, give that a rental and see if it's your missing cartoon.  Probably isn't...but could be, right?  Anyway that's all the help I can offer.

That's a great room! Question: is the exit sign lit? There's this brighter highlight around it, thought maybe that meant it was a lit sign.

General Discussion / Re: What's your game?

For some reason...

I always come back to play Dragon Quest VI, or Street Fighter 2, or Police Quest.  That's about the only games I have continued to play over the years, the rest collect dust.
