22 x 16 Bass Drum
10 x 8 Tom
12 x 10 Tom
14 x 14 Tom
14 x 5.5 Snare

Nice, but it still seems dreadfully puny, next to Mike Portnoy's kit.

Mind you, not everyone can be a virtuoso. :'(

General Discussion / Hello, once again.
Thu 31/03/2005 20:14:18
Hey guys.

I'm glad to say that, after a long absence, I'm back in action. My modem has been out for almost five months to date, and I haven't had the initiative to buy a new one until now.

In other news, Retrovertigo has been put on the shelf, probably permanently. The project took a severe knock, due to the hectic workload under which I've been flailing, recently. I have pending plans to create a much shorter, much less pretty game sometime in the (hopefully) not too distant future.

Until soon, though...
Adieu!

You forgot "ska".

Aye, that I did. Suppose I wrote "...and the kitchen sink", too. Would that not be suitable to fit under the "etc" part, too?

At any rate, Retrovertigo's their easy-strummin' song, so I win on the basis of a technicality (I win! For once.) :=

I take it you two don't understand my style of tongue-in-cheek humour. Could it be too South African for you?

OF bloody course there will be (and probably are) other, much better looking AGS games. But since I'm new, it's obviously a pretty good idea to plug the thread a bit; get some happy self-promotional advertising going, to motivate myself to make the thing live up to the hype (or, at least, ATTEMPT to).

So booger off, and stop cramping my style. 8)

Hah.

P.S: For an example of an incredibly fancy-looking game, which REALLY does have visual style to write home about, check out the Shadows of the Empire thread.

This is just a quick update. := With sideburns.

So, Codename: Retrovertigo has been almost two weeks in the making now. And what with me having to contend with end-of-year exams and the like, I'm damn well chuffed with myself on the progress I've made so far.

Right now, the game includes:

1 character (Allan);
3 rooms;
1 map screen (Tube Map);
Cool GUI graphics;
Some farking great graphics;

And that's about it.

It seems like a lot less, when one lists it that way, but hey, at least it's completely bug free! (so far.)

Thanks, all.

netmonkey: Pretty well the only acclaimed AGS games, which I have not played, are those in the Rob Blanc series. The link is broken.

Just because you're all so cool, I've decided to employ some Flash animation skills to make FMV animated cutscenes for the game. Look out, this is going to be good (although in due course I may release the game on AGS Home before having added the cutscenes, the full thing will be released probably not too long afterwards).

I agree, lookin' good, man!Ã,  Ã, I can't wait to see more about this.

Just to clarify, though, zor is from South Africa.Ã,  He has made quite a few games, though he doesn't come to the Forums anymore.

PS:Ã,  What's a Retrovertigo?Ã,  Ã,  :P

I need to find this Zor character.

"Retrovertigo" is the name of one of the eclectic (death metal/jazz/funk/tango, etc) band Mr Bungle's more accessible songs. Read the lyrics: they're moderately appropriate in context. It's probably going to be the intro track to the game.

I may, however, scrap the title for something better at a later time. So, it's more a case of Codename: Retrovertigo for now.

That sounds like a disease. I know.

Okay. So that's the chap. Kinoko, I'd actually agree with you on that count... only that the problems come in thousandfold barrages, when animating very complex characters. Allan actually looks a lot better when walking, or carrying out a particular animation, in full screen mode, no less, than he does in that image.

What about an occultist? He can be weak at first, sacrificing opponents throughout the game to gain extra strength (and maybe a bit of money)...

One tends to run into a problem when limited to only four classes, I guess. The best class system I've ever seen, has to be in the best RPG ever made: "The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind". You're given the freedom not to have to conform to the strict regulations of your chosen class, and by choosing a star sign under which to be born, you can start the game with either an extremely strong tendency towards thievery, barbarianism, etc..., but what you do thereafter and how you use that is entirely your own choice.

What about an elemental mage?

...Or does that fall under 'wizard' as well...?

Also maybe try illusionist, conjurer, transmogrifier and battlemage (weaker magic but stronger attack etc)...?

Necromancer, definitely. Waking the dead has never been so much fun.

General Discussion / Re: better graphic editor

Can you draw, and do you have a scanner? I find it helps to get a perspective grid going on paper, then place everything, replete with vanishing points, onto the sheet in pencil. Then, I scan in the rough image, and trace it in Photoshop 6 (although I'm sure PSP8 will work just as well; there are only minor differences in the basic editing structure).

The same goes for walking and character animations, although for those, I recommend getting every body part down as a bounding box first, and then working through from there.

An alternative to using PSP for your backgrounds would be to get hold of (read: pirate) a powerful 3D program, like Maya or 3DSMax, and learn how to use the basic tools to create rooms. You can then render them all in cell-shaded mode for a pretty cartoon effect, if necessary. You will have more accurate shadows and lighting, provided you use the thing properly, but you will lose detail on the objects, since cell-shading is a very basic form of render. No problem, though: you can fill those in later in PSP.

I hope all that helps.

Hi.

Before I begin to speak about my forthcoming game, let me introduce myself.

My name is Ben. I live right on the bottom tip of Africa, on the KwaZulu Natal coastline, near Durban. I came across AGS entirely by accident one day, and decided to check it out, since The Curse Of Monkey Island (along with the others in the series) ranks as one of my favourite games of all time.

So, having now played through both Larry Vales games, 5 Days A Stranger, 7 Days A Skeptic, Pleurghburg and the entire Reality-On-The-Norm series, to name a few, I decided to take it upon myself to create something for the community.

I'm going to plug this game now.

The graphics will be something to write home about... Hey, I don't need humility on my side - I'm a graphic designer! You play the cynical character, Allan Davies, and control him on his walkabouts around London. Essentially, this game will be a thriller, filled with black comedy. I won't give away any of the plot as yet; but rather, I'll give you a slight teaser - a screenshot from the first room from the game. Everything, from the iconbar to the inventory, will contain no sample graphics or animations. unfortunately, when the game is finished, I may not be able to upload it for quite some time, since I'm on a 28k connection line in this telecomm-backwardian country. The CD-ROM version will have a killer soundtrack too - as long as I can get the appropriate licencing - so it'll serve as a means of exposure for some of South Africa's best hardcore, metal, punk and alternative bands around.

So, here's the teaser (if it doesn't work, there could be a problem with the DeviantArt server):

Cheers.
