"Adventure games NEVER fare well in the 3D arena."

this, in my opinion, is another terrible arguement.

That doesn't mean anything since adventure games don't fair well at all.

Just because you feel it hasn't been done yet doesn't mean it will never happen. I bet you 27 thousand dollars that there were people saying RPGs will NEVER work on a computer or something silly like that.

And besides. Grim Fandango seems to have done very well and many many many people love the crap out of it.

Leningrad Cowboys kick ass 100%

and to answer the question: check out Game Maker

http://www.cs.uu.nl/people/markov/gmaker/

and what do you mean by beat 'em ups? some people call fighting games like Street Fighter beat 'em ups and some people call Rivery City Ransom or Double Dragon beat 'em ups.

if it's River City Ransom check out http://www.littlefighter.com/  i don't know if they offer the engine up so little fighter might not be a good suggestion at all

also i'm sure Game Maker can handle RTS games, someone from here was working on an XCom like game in it

so i tinkered in photoshop and i think what i might have done is genericised it

I didn't realize there was a sky there [and i'm still not sure there is] but when I realized it I didn't spend much time throwing one in, anyways:

the reason I changed the colours is because in my opinion it's muddy. The landscape is a brownish greenÃ,  monotone and the house and stump are much more colourful and vibrant that it looks funny to me.

It looks like an overcast, dreary, foggy day, which is fine but the houses don't look like they're reacting to the same light.

I don't think the trees should be so ground coloured, they blend a touch too much in my opinion. Also I took the second to last tree and stretched it up and over the ground into the water. Nothing was really overlapping to create depth.

The mountains look like little hills in the distance and the distance doesn't look all that far off and I think is all do to the "camera" view

here are some images i found, don't know if they'll help

http://www.dislocationphoto.com/foggy.jpg

this one is foggy but there are still greens and colours to be seen

http://www.leishman.org/angechris/images/spiterstulen/grass_roofs.jpg

same with this one.

Now if your intention is not to have a scene with lots of light and colour that's fine but there still has to be variation among the darker colours i feel. Other wise it's just a monotone background.

i also made this:

http://sylpher.com/kafka/junk/edits/landscapeedit2.jpg

again if your intention is a dreary day then my sky doesn't show that, but i think changing the "camera" angle would help. Now the trees on the left overlap objects in the background more pushing them back and bringing the trees forward. The house slightly overlaps the stump pushing it back. We can see small mountains in the back but they appear [at least to me] to be large just far away.

oh and for the old country road look might I suggest growth... overgrowth of the path, maybe vines on the house, break the path up, add stones and such

reputation?

crap guess, just popped into my head

I also gave in to a walkthrough and then gave up on Noir because it seemed no matter what I did I was stuck... Something was supposed to happen that never happened and the game never advanced so BALETED!

I didn't think it was a chronic problem as no one else [as in no one here and Dave Gilbert who is the only one I talked to about it really] had the problem

which tree? there are 6.

Squinky inspired at all? Cause it seems so.

When you clarify what tree I'll say more.

Hopefully my mentioning them won't clue them in to this thread but that's what my point with the Newsbots was...

The human element as increator puts it ruins so many good ideas. Lying, cheating, stealing, oppressing, envying, and various other words that end in ing...

I don't mean this as a joke or being silly but man, I wish the earth had a not insane AM controling it.

And when you ask if I think socialism could ever work you mean on a country based scale?

Because socialism is working in places around the world just on small scales. Even anarchy is working but again, small scale, around a hundred people. So do I think socialism can work on a grand scale? Not with the current human intelligence. And intelligence isn't what i really mean... But I'm sure you understand what I mean. I don't mean since the majority of working class people don't understand quantum mechanics that socialism doesn't work I mean while people are still so afraid and so back stabbing and so out for themselves.

edit for increator's last comment: i think we've been over this before, you hated Armageddon. Well, it's just a crap movie and in games a lot of the time they don't portray the US as such a great place. Max Payne springing to mind. Maybe you should make a game that highlights the positives or the actual view of Russia. [my friend Zak spent a semester in Russia and he said it was great that they salted bread for his welcoming and the ladies were pretty, and there was a store front that had a large samurai statue attacking a praying mantis that was attacking a city... Please focus on that aspect! hehe]

hey CJ, dunno if you got my message about this but repeatedly_execute_always doesn't repeatedly execute always

as in during dialogs it stops. Is this on purpose or impossible to change?

Kerry lies a lot, and they are stupid lies that are easily found out to be false.

I get the whole coughing is trying to say that Bush lies also/more but I think it has to be said

Bush lies a lot, and they are stupid lies that are easily found out to be false... Also his lies destroyed relations with foriegn countries, destroyed lives, destroyed our national surplus, destroyed more lives, just generally destroyed...

And Bush really stuck to the issue of terrorism right? Remember Osama? Remeber Afghanistan at all? Remeber anything?! Remember how we were going into Iraq to destroy terrorism and then it turns out when there were no terrorists there related to September 11th we were there to over throw Saddam? Remember how Bush said Clinton's military isn't ready and he gutted it? Oh wait that's another lie and not flopping on the issues because someone else had to correct the President on that. If he stuck to the issue so much then why are we apparently no safer now than we were before September 11?

and again i ask: Can you prove that the Shiites and the Sunni Kurds shrugged their shoulders and said "Hey, better than what Saddam would have done, so we're ok!" I would like to see your source on this, please.

Also I'd like to see where in this thread someone said "America sucks and it deserves what it gets." or something to that effect. Badmouthing the president is not bad mouthin the US.

Bush probably didn't know what was going on.

And that sums up the last 4 years...
