argh! I gotta either update or take that tutorial down, people really shouldn't be using it for tracing their own characters, I don't know what I was thinking

The hands are too floppy, I suggest stiffening them up, also there isn't enough frames in your walk cycle to have the pant legs flopping up when he walks, they just look like they flash and not flow. Either add more frames and remove the socks all together.

I like that you made him blink but it'll happen way to often when he's walking across a room, personally I'd remove it but it's up to you.

as for the background, it's nice. But I'd like tos ee it without the filter for a comparison

also you might want to try seperating the foreground objects from the background and taking the couch out, the stand with the vase works because it's overlapping at least the line of the floor, the couch isn't overlapping anything and just looks like it's dropping off the bottom of the picture.

it seems first you're just throwing the idea out there and then all of the sudden you have the first part made. did you start working on this and then ask if people would like it?

also:

"I know AGS can do it, it just hasn't yet. The whole point of remaking MI would be to see it in another light, a different light. A light us game adventures lovers would be prould to see."

I know AGS can do it to... It's obvious AGS can do it, it could do it for about 2 years now. There is no new light to look at MI through if you're taking the same exact art/story/animations/music/puzzles and just porting it to AGS. It just makes no sense... Does this mean I'm calling you a moron and a fool for doing this? No, do whatever you want and thousands of people will download it. I'm just saying maybe your time would be better spent making your own game. Doesn't MI inspire you to make a game that is your own? With your own story and your own characters exploring your own world?

The majority of us have MI and we've played it tons of times, the only thing porting it to AGS would do is get you into copyright trouble and be a huge drain on your free time. Making it free is NOT a good reason. Do you not think it's worth it to buy?

also to answer your question: Has any one ever remade Monkey Island?

Yes, Lucasarts did, they remade it into 256 colours, which had a point, it updated the look of the game.

damn you Squinky!! damn you to Bermuda!!

all the gripes you have dan i share, but there are a few good parts in the series...

"Try Again" didn't just appear however, it existed in lots of text adventures for many years. Why it didn't get added to graphical adventures until later, i have no idea.

I respect Kyrandia over King's Quest more because at least Kyrandia tried to create it's own universe and not just take a bunch of fairy tales and push them into a game. The Hand of Fate was interesting and maybe it was because I was a kid, the ending surprised me and I didn't even see it coming.

I should play them again but I can't stand adventure games at the moment... Maybe in a few months I'll have Jess play them and I'll just watch.

I don't really know what to think of Kyrandia anymore... I played Kyrandia 2 first [it was about the first game that i ever wanted to buy when i was a kid cause it looked good] then i bought 3 and it came with 1 and 2 so I played the first and then the third.

The first I don't remember too well. In my memory it seemed generic... Maybe I'll have to see it again. I remember the art was nice but that's about all. Kyrandia 2 I remember better, it was pretty and I liked some of the art and the whole casting spells thing was neat but some of the puzzles, ugh, playing Simon with the fireberries or whatever they were... ugh...

the 3rd was interesting and had a lot of neat ideas [escaping from capture and then escaping from jail, personality meter] but again, a lot of the puzzles and stuff were really badly done. Objects seemed placed in the world only to further a puzzle and not like they belong there at all [and what was with the damned tic tac toe game?! and the damned fleas!] and the art was a little wonky from time to time [again, this is distilled memories through the years, i could be dumb]

I think as a whole, the Kyrandia series makes an impressive series but there may be too many stupid parts to make it an awesome series, personally

Really interesting idea Rap [do you have a name? i feel funny calling you Rap, hehe]

it sounds much more interesting than the other game and more emotionally interesting, a kid running away trying to save his mother the stress is a nice idea.

I like the background but would like to see more, add more detail. now more detail doesn't mean every brick but just a few little things here and there, some dirt, some junk. also, i'd darken some of the outline colours a bit

otherwise, good luck, and remember, don't try to be too ambitious [the whole hamburger and newspaper thing] you'll drown yourself in the details...

eric

you really need to read the manual and play with AGS

all these questions will be answered by doing that, however:

AGS imports PNG files now so if you render your 3d images out, convert them to PNG and make the background transparent then import them into AGS it maintains the alpha blending of the AAed edges

i don't have a game made in 800x600 but try my 640x400 game it's called Spellbound and it was made for MAGS

http://www.agsforums.com/games.php?action=detail&id=305

animated backgrounds act as a slide show, you import up to 5 different backgrounds and then you can set them to animate between the 5, useful mostly for changing a scene drastically without using a new room [day to night, normal to after a fire] it swaps the ENTIRE background

an animated object would be, you create an object, import it's animation frames and then set the object to those frames, so instead of creating 5 backgrounds with the tree moving slightly in each, you create an object that is the tree with say 30 frames in it and set it to animate at a certain speed.

cutscenes are all what you make them, animated objects/characters combined with AVIs or MPEGs or FLCs or whatever. playing with AGS will let you know what it is you can do better than me explaining

or even play some AGS games and see

real nice

i like it a lot

just get rid of the floppy hands, that was more of an example than a suggestion

i was just trying to show secondary motion and think it looks like poo on my animation and it makes your character look like poo

stiffen up the hands a little and it'll be great

now, you do know that AGS doesn't have 3d support, it's all 2d sprites right? just making sure.

so the majority of the things you want to do are possible but not how you want to do them.

you can have a character controlled with the arrow keys, you can have antialiased sprites, you can put the shadow right into the animation frames instread of having a character follow the feet of the character. Scaling characters is obviously possible but again, there is no camera and there is no 3d support so it's a walkable area you create that gets smaller on one end and large on the other

800x600 speed all depends on your computer. if you make a test game and test it on different computers you can find out what your game could run on, one of my games is 640x400 32 bit colour and some people had problems with it being too slow... so you may run in to some problems with people here not being able to play it.

all sprites are imported with a transparent colour in the background [unless it's a PNG] like bright pink, the pink is chosen as the transparent colour and the rest is left opaque.

animations can either be animated objects [which i prefer] or a series of 5 swapped background images

particle effects, not really. there is a snow/rain plugin but it's basic [it's beautiful, but basic]

if you read the thread he said that he's not making a game, they're for practice

but other than that I demand a game set in space with people from the 1800's!

Make it so!

hehe modge, that's the problem with trapezoid, he's so popular and he makes music and flash movies, the file sizes eat away at his bandwidth like pac-man on a meth bender.

jesus C, could you get a little more harsh next time? i don't think you've insulted him quite enough.

i don't care if he annoys you, you're probably 15 years his senior, act it

GIF saves layers too.

not really, if you have a GIF animation and open it in imageready it will display the frames as layers but it won't save layers like a .psd file will

I like your humour, and by that I mean it's ok to like Monty Python but don't copy word for word from them. Take the inspiration from them but let your own style shine through.

The comedy that I recognized as your own was much funnier than reciting the holy handgrenade part from Holy Grail.

The whole Adam and Steve thing was funny [not to be rude but did you come up with that yourself? If so I enjoyed it a lot]

also, may i suggest having actual thumbnails for the comics and not just resized in browser comic pages?

otherwise keep up the good work and i look forward to more from you

but everyone sure would love to play your games!

Jess and I watch sad movies and we cry all over each other, not like sobbing because I don't think a movie could really drive me to that kind of sadness [unless it was a movie my mother made right before a car fell on her]

The first movie I watched with her was Grave of the Fireflies and when it was done she saw I was crying* and gave me tons of kisses...

so crying rocks!

I tear up at documentaries a lot because they are usually the saddest movies ever. There was a documentary on David Koresh and the Davidians and what happened to them and that was depressing to the point of shooting myself in the head, then a movie about this woman who had a female to male sex change operation, got ovarian cancer and then no doctors would operate on him because they felt what he did was immoral... I think that was more tears of rage...

I Never Liked You, a comic by Chester Brown
The Playboy also by him
The Pianist, oh good god!

also the good thing about crying is if you're sick and your all clogged up, watch a sad movie and by the end it'll be like someone yelled "Immigratíon!" in the Ramad Inn of your sinuses!

eric

*as las has said many times, if you don't cry by the end of Grave of the Fireflies then you have no soul**

**if souls exists

no girls with any self-respect would have slept with me.

well there's your problem... you have to get the girls with no self respect, obviously.

do what Las does and troll the suicide wards of hospitals, easy pickin's!

heh, what if Farlander was praying to Pan the god of nature?

You're saying praying works to Pan!! Awesome! I wonder what Jesus would think of that!
