I suggest unto you

MoveViewport(x, y, speed, blocking)

doing what i have to do for my game is terrible annoying code wise, it gets done but takes AGES to get all the bugs out

moveviewport especially with a blocking command would be wonderful

love,
eric

i don't think it's a matter of guys playing games as it is a matter of guys MAKING games

back in the old atari days there were no real characters. just blips on a screen and random aliens attacking. Then we get Pac Man and he's a sort of character and then we get jumpman through Nintendo and so on and so on. Why is Pac Man a man? Why is jumpman saving his girlfriend?!? well just cause, it was the early days of video games and they couldn't create an amazing back story or any story really that wasn't immediatly understood from playing the game [EAT PELLETS AVOID GHOSTS] so this is what they did. Save the girlfriend is a reason for doing something in the game, right along with shoot the aliens and WIZARD NEEDS FOOD!

"I mean, let's face it. Women are from venus, Men are from Mars. We understand each other very little, and connect very rarely on a mental level. "

i sure do hope this is a joke cause otherwise i think you've bought into a terrible stereotype of men and women and as a favour to me i'd like you to reevaluate it.

the earliest female lead character i can think of is Ms. Pacman and that game sold extremely well and is one of the top 3 best selling arcade games ever... and it was developed by 2 guys!

after that i can think of Kings Quest 3 was it? with Rosella. Created by husband and wife.

There's a question for you Yufster... if guys make games for guys with guys in them how come Roberta Williams' 10 or so games mostly feature guys as the main character? Cause she bought into the whole men are strong deal and couldn't compete with a female character in a "Man's" world or cause she was trying to tell a story?

I think you need to do some more research and take in more information

the street fighter series had women you could play, mortal kombat, tekken, DOA, just about every fighting game. And before you say "but they wore skirts and giggled" think about the fact that the men were also stereotypes, big muscles deep voices [except for Vega]

remember that women can find male game character's attractive too. I know people who find Alucard from Castelvania Symphony of the Night attractive. The same with Chris Redfield (?) from Resident Evil and the main character from Silent Hill.

Wishbringer, Zork, Myst and countless other games didn't even assign a gender to the main character, don't forget those games.

What about the final fantasy games? female characters in them, Final Fantasy 6 for SNES in america, the main character was a woman and she saved the day. Don't forget those games.

Duke Nuk'em/Will Rock/etc is a big hulking man with muscles and "tude" and yet you forget about them when a woman is placed in a stereotypical role.

"Maybe this was completely unintentional but it still stands that the female needed rescuing, as per usual."

ok sorry that i have to be harsh here but shut the hellllllll up. What in the world are you talking about?!

jesus that just makes me afraid to do anything with ANY gender. all my games from now on will feature genderless robots devoid of emotion, is this better? goddammit it was just a puzzle, lighten the hell up.

Dave: Bobbin hid his face for a more important reason than remaining aloof. And you can't say that the reason Manny Calavera was the way he was cause it wasn't socially acceptable for him to be anything else. that's putting words into the designers mouths or some such thing. Maybe again... They were designing a character, sure maybe that character was a little over done but it was a character none the less.

"Maybe if a female made a game she could make a more natural character"

I hate that statement, that women can write women and men can't. Or whenever someone is told "A woman wouldn't say that" or "That's not how a woman would react to that situation" it's like "Who are you to say that?" Just cause I'm a man doesn't mean I'm not a human and I like to feel I have a grasp on how HUMANS react to certain situations. Some women scream when they're scared, men do to. Some men don't scream and want to hit things and take charge, women also. Some men cry and so do women. Some men wear skirts and some women wear pants. There is NO way to pin point what a man will do and what a woman will do in a given situation, it's what the character will do. Write the damned character and the actions and reactions will follow.

some people like zip, some people like rar, some people like ace

in my opinion i think the difference is so small you won't really be shaving off like megabytes so either will do, but the majority of people have ZIP or something that can open it

the limits of the ags engine won't let you easily drop items at the moment

ways could be figured out but they would be very assbackwards and too hard to manage i think

i can't think of a way to do this in ags... i don't think there is an easy way that wouldn't be either way too annoying to work with or way to annoying to play

eric could be wrong tho

nice

the keyboard movement is kinda wonky, how are you moving it?

i'd suggest something in the rep.execute where if the left key is held down you just add 3 or something to an integer and then set the character's X to that integer

should move smoother

the background gives me the willies i think cause it seems to undulate towards me and then fall back

the islands pop up on top of the planes if they go past the plane's baseline. i wonder how the game would look if you actually moved up along an actual background. wouldn't have to be fast.. and maybe palette effects for the water would work well as in some cycling

see, the more you go into the game the more you'll realize that sure AGS is powerful but damn is it hard to get it to do things like this, like adding shadows will be easy enough but still annoying, the same with more badguys

but rock on with the scripting so far, it's all so tight and well commented [something i need to remember to do, hehe]

don't use rawdrawing for animated explosions, i'd recommend objects or even just setting up an int that disables the hit detection for the explosion/plane

scrolling isn't possible unless you make 5 different backgrounds that will act as the animation, so each frame will have moved the water down a few pixels, just make a loop and it should look ok [especially if since the background is tile based]

problems are you can't change the speed of the animation yet unless you used timers and then it'd get choppy
#3491
first thing i tried doing was moving the plane with the keyboard then i realized you had to click, that could clear up lots of the movement issues i think, using the keyboard and not the mouse

it would move much smoother too

i also see that the explosions continue as objects that can destroy you. is this cause you're only changing the view number of the plane? i'd probably use objects for the big explosions that can pass right through the ship [unless you want them to be deadly]

then for say smaller explosions just use a one frame RawDrawImage() that gets placed and removed at each hit [like on a larger battleship that takes more than one hit]

planes as characters was definetly a good idea because they have their own baseline that moves with them [correct?] and the collision will work better [from my tests on my zelda game i find this best]

if you still want to keep the moving with the mouse click then make sure you turned off "character turns before walking" and maybe turn off "anti-glide mode" the plane clicks when it moves and i believe this is from antiglide mode

overall nice work, woop woop

[scroll that background dammit! hehe]

I linked that fighting Elaine pic ages ago... can't remember when though.

i'm sorry i just have to ask... so what?

never say that...

if the general consensus was something we all paid attention too this would be the First Person Shooter Studio Forum and we'd all be l33t

try new things even if they suck at first, forge new ground, tear adventure games a new anus, do it if you want too

i'm all for picking up everything, it would discourage the PICK UP EVERYTHING THAT ISN'T NAILED DOWN! philosophy of adventure games. it would force people to think differently and sure a lot of people will hate it but a lot of people will love it. not everyone loves pleurbugh and not everyone loves monkey island, it's the people that do that are important

ok i kinda lost it in the end there...

hehe the reason i guess denim is just cause the area was so huge and i couldn't think of a possible reason why there would be that much purple on a comic page

i enjoy the new image especially how the line is all but gone, i think his shadowed foot is great looking

Quintators: i recommend a game called Dream Web to you, you can find it for download off the internet

the game does just what you want to do, you can pick up anything and carry it around with you, once i was carrying at least 3 pounds of cheese just for fun and cause i could. The game is FILLED with objects [in one scene a dinner is knocked over and peas are all over the ground, you can pick up like 10 individual peas including the entire dinner] it was very annoying if only because the puzzles weren't very intuitive

i feel that if you're going to add a system like this you should make sure the puzzles can be solved multiple ways with different objects and that there is no way to get a walking dead.

a woop de wooop

let's start from the start:

andail: i drew this on the computer and my ability at drawing straight lines on the comp is so under-developed that i feared drawing a chair or a stool or something cause it would probably end up looking bad and smooshy, like it was a Lichenstein soft art.

yak: i agree, more shading detail prolly would have helped a lot. this is the first time i've coloured like this [well the first first time was in this drawing but it was only using the same brushes http://www.sylpher.com/kafka/junk/bunny.jpg ] and I didn't really know exactly what i was doing.

taryuu: as for the background, more than likely if i moved the heart and my name off of the canvas onto the black that little area where my name was had some colour like the upper left but I took it out so you could read my name... more than likely a bad idea. The background was a result of me dickin' around anyways but it's something I'll keep in mind for next time.

pester: indeed, i really should have pulled up more reference pics for me to get colours right [i was supposed to have learned the colour wheel in college but I never did it cause i was a stupid freshman]

igor: i think you're 100% right, the line drawing has something more going for it than the coloured. the lines in my opinion are real nice looking [toot toot me own horn] and the colouring could be more compatible with it. the reason i didn't go with simpler colouring is cause i feel like that's all i can do, so i tried going out of the ordinary, but i think maybe if i went with how jess colours some art i'd get a better result: http://www.sylpher.com/jes/images/zainacowgirl.jpg

jason, my guess what be that he scanned some denim or something, some sort of texture and then just coloured on top of it, am i right do i win a prize?

The Art:

Pessi: I agree on the face, a second light illuminating the face would have been nice, drawing attention to it and the lollipop. the colours seem really deep and maybe that's just cause there's no background around him for his colours to play off of. next stop, background city for eric.

loominous: i love how it looks like an old xerox that's been coloured or a silk screen or something, i don't think the technique works well with my drawing, as in the mood of the person [at least in my mind i really wanted him to have bright colours] but i love the look of it anyway and would look forward to more.

Igor: you changed the lightsource completely and maybe that's also something i should have done. the two colour shading is nice but again not what i was going for in terms of mood with colour, if that makes ANY sense whatsoever.

But here's what's up for next time: simpler colouring, stretch out from the normal eric but don't go too far or i'll end up in confusionville population 1, i'm gonna try maybe inking at a hight res and without line variation just to see... and take all your points put them in a blender, puree them, add 1 egg and drink it down

thank you SO much for helping and for taking the time to colour me art

if no one minds i'll be posting another image here sometime soon

danke danke,
eric
