I really like the art of this game, however I think an important thing for you to experiment with is when to not add a frame. He gets up out of his chair VERY slowly and there is a frame for basically every pixel of movement in that animation. Try removing every other frame and see how it goes. I tried it on my computer and he got up a bit speedier and the persistence of motion is good enough to trick my brain.

Congrats, however... Do you have a URL you'd like us to click?

Critics' Lounge / Re: Bedroom background

Hey, just a couple comments:

1: Can we see the background before you colour reduced it? Looking at this in Promotion and you're only using 81 colours. Are you making a 256 colour game or are you just colour reducing to get a low-res look? Either way I think there are some colour reduction tips that could be given if I see the full res background.

2:

The red circle: You have a lot of colours to make up your dark shadows and gradients between shadows but not a lot to represent the light areas. It really shows in this spot. It's so bright and a focal point for the scene but there are only 4 colours to make up the lighting on that wall.

Purple circles: These areas are very undefined. They're very noisy parts of the image and they have very few colours. The same with the bed stand cabinet under the red circle. You made it in 3d but the transition to 3d has left it a shadow of what it's supposed to be and only because it's an object next to a bed do I guess what it is.

Green circles: I'm guessing you used some sort of level editor for a 3d game? I'm also guessing it's either UnrealEd or something like it? The reason I guess this is because the shadows from these boxes don't quite line up. You can see where the light is leaking from under the brush that made up these boxes and casting an unrealistic shadow. Some photoshop touch up in these areas is really all that's needed.

Generally the scene is really noisy with a high contrast between pixels. This a result, mostly, of bad colour reduction. Also, the center of your scene kind of just smudges together in a mush of shadow and colour. The box on the left is brown, so is the floor, so is the bed. Both blue and brown box have no clear edges. The tops are lit but not enough to really show it.

Here's a REALLY quick test I did in photoshop:

I light the tops of the boxes a little more. Did very quick AA on the side of the green box on the right. Messed with the levels to try and get some of the grey out of the room and make those lights warmer. Added highlights to the door decorations and boards.

Is it really that over hyped? The last I heard about this was back when the first teaser came out months ago.

If cryogenics were safe, there's always cooks and crazies willing to give up all they have for a chance at something new and exciting)

The one thing all those crazies will need when they make contact in 5 million years with another species are cooks. Good idea to send them along!

Mods: http://skepdic.com/philadel.html the Philadelphia Experiment, not really that amazing. Just some people being silly.

lo_res_man: http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/episodes/2004/06/25 give that show a listen. It's pretty interesting and halfway through they talk about extra terrestrials and the possibility or impossibility of meeting them.

I didn't mean to put you off but you must agree, a first post that makes no reference to the forum subject, appears to be a form letter and the poster in no way introduces themselves and states that they are indeed a silent AGSer just makes it all suspect.

Thanks for replying but I would agree that this might not be the best place to ask because people are [I think/hope] a little too old for MySpace drama, but I could be wrong! I guess we'll find out 2 things about this study!

Hello, did you sign up just to post this? Do you know what AGS is? It's hard not to consider this spam considering this site has nothing to do with myspace at all.. I mean, at least you posted in the correct forum! But single poster out of the blue raises a red flag for a mod. Respond here or in PM please.

The story is also a flimsy pretext to have some violence in the game but, so it goes!

My dad has a bald spot and my mum actually has a brush with her thick roll of hair.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think baldness is hereditary on the mother's side? So if your mum's dad is (or was) bald, then...er...get a hat?

Consider yourself corrected! This is a myth as far as my earlier reading has proven.

My up walkcycle sucks hard and I know it, I'd suggest starting from scratch on that one and not looking at what I did.

Anyway, just wanted to say that you can set your thread to notify you of replies so you don't have to check back randomly.

Good luck!

I just don't get what's so special about alcohol. I simply don't get why there are people who refuse to try it in the first place. It doesn't make any sense at all.

Imagine the following dialog:
"I've tried coffee. I like. I've tried sweets. I like. I've tried sushi. I like."
"Have you tried alcohol?"
"ALCOHOL!!1 Nah, I'll never try that!!"
"What, why not? What's so special about alcohol?"
"Err, I have no idea. But I'll never try it!!"

It just doesn't make any sense.

Have you read anything that the people who say they don't like the taste have written? I have tried many types of alcohol, I don't like the taste of 99% of them. What is so hard to understand about that?

You just imagined that dialogue but please find it in these posts.

"I simply don't get why there are people who refuse to try it in the first place."

Pete and I are very similar. We don't like the taste, we don't like the idea of inhibiting out brains in ways we can avoid. If someone orders a drink and says "This is great! Try it!" we will try it. Maybe it does taste good, maybe it doesn't. If it does, great! There's still that self imposed desire to not inhibit our brains in avoidable ways.

One of the only things I've tried that tastes good is Sangria. HOWEVER, just because it tastes good still doesn't mean I want to try getting drunk or even tipsy. Who the heckfire is saying "I don't drink and everyone who does is wrong!"? Please tell me! You're blowing this way out of whack, man! I'm sorry, but you are incredibly defensive and reading into the tiniest thing. Pete never said anything like that what you're freaking out about.

There are millions of things that don't appeal to me. Eating jellyfish is one of them. I have never and do not see myself eating jellyfish in the foreseeable future, I'm not saying that anyone who has is an idiot. I'm just saying that it doesn't appeal to me. It's not that hard.

I don't like the idea or the chemistry or even the smallest affect it has on the body behind drinking. Now I feel I have to parse this down to the nub, by affect on the body I don't mean liver disease or anything like that. I just don't like the idea of losing even the smallest bit of "control" over my senses. I don't like the taste and I don't like the idea of having my brain inhibited. I'm happy the way I am. Other people can do whatever they want as long as they're happy.

Other people can do whatever they want as long as they're happy. Written twice so you don't think I'm making some sly remark against drinkers.

"I know dozens, probably hundreds of people who enjoy alcohol on a regular basis. None of them is an alcoholic, or constantly broke or otherwise ruining his life or his health."

That's awesome, I never said everyone who drinks is an alcoholic or constantly broke or ruining their lives. Defensive.

"And then again this stuff about you being happy with yourself without booze, quietly implementing that all drinkers were somehow self-conscious."

Very defensive again.

Anal sex: no, it was a joke, sorry!

"This is page four of the thread, do I still have to address exactly the OP's statements?"

On page three you were still talking to the OP and this is what I'm trying to have a conversation about.

"So regarding Oliwerko's situation: why not mix the stuff, water it down. I loved Vodka Orange when I was 18/19. It's up to you whether there's going to be more vodka or more orange juice in the glass.
If people are seriously going to mock you or even exclude you just because you don't gulp down liters of 40% pure, you can still leave."

What I was trying to ask about was:

"I readily, immediately accept the refusal to drink alcohol from anyone. If the person tried it. Because despite what they might think, they don't have any idea of how it feels to be drunk."

What about if one is not interested in knowing what it's like to be drunk?

If my anal sex immediately put you on the defensive, I'm sorry. Reread my post again and don't read the bit about butt sex and you can see that I'm just trying to have a conversation. Also, you suggest that he should drink diluted vodka and I ask, to what end does that serve? Just to "get it over with" and get drunk stealthily?
#396
I ment the last line of KhrisMUC's post
#397
the anal sex bit was a joke... get a sense of humor

Maybe I missed the bit where Oliwerko said he was looking to try drinking but I get from his writing that he's not interested:

"About the drinking - maybe it is not a bad idea to start with really small amounts. Some beer or so may not be so bad idea. Ill reconsider. But that is not my point. Because it is the solution that I am not searching for."

Not the solution he's searching for.

Also, I said I'm not interested in drinking alcohol or "experiencing" even mild drunkenness yet you suggest I try another drink. Is there a disconnect I'm not seeing here?
#398
What about not wanting to drink, not enjoying the taste of alcohol, and not wanting to know what it's like when drunk? I'm just not curious. I've never been drunk and most alcohol I've ever consumed in a single sitting is half a glass of wine [I tried drinking it and could barely finish the half I did get down].

The thing is, people say to someone like me who doesn't like the taste of alcohol "Drink Sangria or a mixed drink! It's just like juice!" but I'm also not interested in drinking alcohol, I just so happen to also not enjoy the taste.

So when someone says "why not mix the stuff, water it down." I have to ask "To what purpose is this trying to achieve?" He doesn't want to drink but have him drink anyway?

How many here have rejected receiving anal sex without trying it? Shame shame!

Thanks Jim!

I've always been interested in the backgrounds to cartoons because it looked like so much work was put in to something that would only be in a scene for a few seconds and not really payed attention too... Hooray internet!

General Discussion / Re: PETA?

I haven't watched the video and won't because I don't need too... Personally I'm more concerned with the way people are treated in the world right now than animals, not because I don't care for animals but because humans can destroy the world and chickens can eat worms.

However, when the senior vice president of your organization takes insulin derived from animal testing and still containing animal products and says "It's ok that I do this, I need my life to fight for animals!" but then tries to stop other animal testing that could save other lives... I really stop caring!

Mary Beth Sweetland:
"I'm an insulin-dependent diabetic. Twice a day I take synthetically manufactured insulin that still contains some animal products -- and I have no qualms about it ... I'm not going to take the chance of killing myself by not taking insulin. I don't see myself as a hypocrite. I need my life to fight for the rights of animals."
