Well, I thought this story was true, but apparently all you skeptics were correct.Ã,  From the latest Private Eye:

Quote...Doubters immediately raised eyebrows at a story that sounded so much like an urban legend, although the story was full of quotes from the University Clinic of Luebeck - identifiable as the UniKlinik Lubeck.

The story was written by Berlin-based freelancer Allan Hall.Ã,  When the Eye contacted Hall to ask where the story came from he snapped: "It was in Bild am Sonntag [a German tabloid] and the Medical Tribune."Ã,  Er, no.Ã,  There was a recent story about a Lubeck couple who sought fertility treatment in the German Medical Tribune, but the cause of their celibacy was erectile dysfunction, not ignorance.Ã,  Bild am Sonntag actually reported the story fairly accurately, quoting "potenzprobleme as the cause.Ã,  He quickly changed his story to "someone at the clinic told me."

And apparently this Allan Hall guy has previous form: he also changed a story about a guy with masses of pet spiders having died, so that in his version of the story, the spiders started to eat the man once he was dead.Ã,  In reality, all the spiders were still in their cages when his (intact) body was found.

Journo's, eh?

I can't believe I'm seeing people complain about this puzzle on an adventure forum!

Spoiler
It's a perfect example of a 'think outside the box' puzzle, surely?

Heard of this?

I used to have Lone Wolf #1 a while ago.  I can barely remember any of it, but I'm looking forward to the Project Aon guys finishing up so I can play through the entire series.

It'll be interesting to see a gamebook conversion, and I'll certainly play it when it's ready.  Good luck with it.

QuoteWell, generally speaking, TV documentaries try to give a balanced viewpoint about the events that they are documenting.

But the TV documentaries that do have a completely different intent than Moore.Ã,  Generally, their purpose is to inform, while Moore's purpose is to persuade.Ã,  If you ever see a TV documentary with the intention to persuade (and they're not all that rare - did you ever see that Dispatches documentary which argued a causal link between video game violence and real-life violence?), you'll see just as much editorialising as in Moore's films.

Quotehe presents his opinionated and obviously biased opinions in the form of a documentary, which encourages people to accept them as fact, rather than properly questioning what he's saying.

I think this is a confusion that comes from the idea that documentaries by their nature are (or try to be) objective and balanced.Ã,  And this idea comes from the lumping in of persuasive films with documentaries, when surely they are (or were) two seperate categories?

Whatever the case, they have been lumped in together, so Moore's persuasive film wins 'Best Documentary' at the oscars, and a persuasive film is broadcast on Channel 4 as part of the "award winning documentary strand Dispatches".Ã,  Persuasive works and documentaries are now, apparently, inseperable, despite what the dictionary might say.

But is this confusion the fault of Moore or any other persuasive film maker?Ã,  Should they be forbidden from using such an efficient format for presenting their arguments because some of their audience have no critical thinking skills?

You're all wrong.Ã,  The worst advert on the planet is

Shit, Flippy, for your Dad to say something like that to you, I figured you must be some twenty-odd year old, no education, no job, hanging listlessly around the house and making no effort to sort yourself out or something.

But fucking fifteen?

Nobody is a failure at fifteen.  I'm actually really angry that somebody would say that to a fifteen-year-old.  You're not even out of frigging school yet, for fuck's sake.

So, in conclusion, m'lud, I disagree with your father.

I'm 24.

Notice how CJ complained how old people are making him feel, then mysteriously forgot to say how old he is? ¬¬

Heh, I was wondering how long it would take for this to turn into a 'quotes from Spaced' thread. :)

And look what they have at Play.com:
clicky clicky

For a very reasonable price, methinks.

Er, yeah.  Shaun of the Dead stuff.

Muahahaha!!

I'm still looking forward to that SCRAMM game. ;)

I thought this was a joke until I saw the credit card details form on the second register page.

I have to say I'm disappointed.  I've been working on my game for a long time, and now I discover I won't be able to release it without paying 60 quid??  Well I'm not going to pay such a ridiculous amount of money for something like AGS.  We've already seen what AGAST and SLUDGE are capable of, and there's a SCRAMM game coming out in a couple of weeks, and all three of those engines are still free, so why should anyone pay for this?

I'm just annoyed that you strung everyone along for so long, making us learn how to use the program, the language, design everything specifically to fit AGS, and now those of us who can't or won't pay have to start all over again with a new engine.  Well thanks a lot, I don't think.

www.romzom.com

Anyone heard of this?  It's a Romantic Comedy Zombie movie by the people who made the sitcom Spaced.  And it looks frigging hilarious.

ADSL trailer (Realplayer)
56K trailer (Realplayer)
Flash trailer

There's also a second trailer at the official site, which is worth watching (couldn't find a direct link, sorry).

If anyone here's ever seen Spaced, they'll know why I'm pissing my pants in anticipation right now.

General Discussion / Re:Channel 4 - Swearing

Channel 4 is running a series of promotions that show all the celebs that they have on their channel.  In each one, they basically just ask each one what their favourite 'X' is and film the answers.  I'm not sure if that one was ever on TV, but I'd bet they bleeped out the C word if it was.

I never thought I'd see Judy Finnigan say 'F**k'.  Muahaha!

During the game, I always skip speech.

During a cutscene, I always skip speech if the game will let me.  If it won't let me, there'd better be a damn good reason (like the music is timed to fit the cutscene).  Otherwise I start yelling design criticisms at the monitor as though it gives me a direct audio line to the developers (I did lots of this during certain sequences of BS3 :p).

But the entire cutscene should be skippable too, just for players who don't like to rewatch them on a replay.

It's funny how we've all got used to m0ds posting while drunk that nobody comments on it any more. ;)

Virtual Theatre was used in BASS, but to a lesser (and more realistic, IMO) extent.

The point of Virtual Theatre had very little to do with the gameplay, I think.  It was just to make the characters in the gameworld act more realistically, rather than have everybody stand in exactly the same spot for the entire chapter/game, as happens in pretty much every other adventure game in existence.

I'm sort of hoping that at some point Revolution will pick up the concept of Virtual Theatre again and make it more sophisticated.  The movement and actions of the NPCs in The Last Express really, really breathed life into that gameworld, and it bothers me that no other designers are looking at this avenue of innovation.

Hey, the Question Time spoof was superb.  But put a diamond in a turd and it's still a turd.

Loom is very overrated (Captain Mostly summed up it's fatal flaw best), but I don't think it comes anywhere near 'worst adventure game'.

The worst adventure I've played to date is probably Starship Titanic.  Though I also hate The Feeble Files with a passion.

I've always, and still, call them 'dead ends', and was confused when I first heard the term 'walking dead' in the AGS forums.  So you're not alone.

I do think it's a fitting description, though.  I guess it's just down to personal choice which term you use.
