Well, I think there is at least one very important difference between the games (one has a time limit, the other doesn't) that justifies them both being nominated.  It's not too difficult to imagine some people might prefer the gameplay of the first because they get all fuddled when they have to plan their strategy at speed.

That said, and as much fun as I found the Mitten's Shooter, I was really shocked when it won.  It was great, but...  VPXT2 was just on another level entirely.

It's not just spam, it's a financial scam.  If you showed willing, the next few e-mails would build towards conning money out of you somehow.

QuoteWhy make a fuss about the use of a word when the misunderstanding and hostility is much deeper? Teach compassion first, and a more careful use of language will come naturally...

Actually, one of the methods psychologists use to change people's attitudes is to change the language they use.  Essentially, the language you use reinforces the beliefs you have.

In the early stages of a new DC hub, there's never anybody there.  You'll just have to have a bit of patience while people cotton on and slowly seep in.

Presumably we'll be able to transfer AGS games on this hub?

I just prefer not to sign up to things if I don't have to, because I find it difficult to keep track of all the things I've joined up for on the 'net.

But it's no problem.  If there's nowhere else to get it, I'll just get it from Boomtown.  I was about to sign up for it yesterday, when I thought I might as well ask here first on the offchance it was hosted elsewhere.

Has anyone got a link to "The Case" demo where I don't have to sign up to Boomtown to get it?

Man, I love commentaries.  I eat those things up like popcorn.  I'm extremely glad to hear the Underdogs Fatman still has the behind the scenes stuff, and I'd love to see more commentaries on other people's games.  But yeah, I hope you'd also be talking about the design process rather than just pointing out what's fact and what's fiction.

New: Shoo

But now how will I distinguish that thing on my foot from that sound I make to get rid of small children?

If you're new to the archive, here's an article explaining its structure:

http://brasslantern.org/players/guides/ifarchive.html

And here's Baf's Guide, which is a nice way to search through the games by genre, rating, awards, etc, and also read some mini-reviews of many of the games:

Well, as people have already mentioned, the combination of the IF community being much longer established than the GA community, and the speed with which IF games can be written helps.

I also think the general attitude of the IF community is a big spur to original and innovative IF.  There have been many discussions and articles analysing the various aspects of the format, and they are soon to publish a book called 'IF Theory' collecting some of these articles together.  There just seems to be a significant driving force in the IF community to get to know the mechanics of IF inside-out, so they can take it to greater heights.

The GA community just hasn't developed to that stage yet.

QuoteI just meant in general, people seem resistant to things that aren't 100% provable. I just like to think we don't know it all, not that we should blindly believe everything but not claim we know everything for fact either.

I absolutely agree with that sentiment, but it only applies to things that are genuinely inexplicable.  This isn't the case here - for anyone who's ever heard of the technique of 'cold-calling', this is one of the most blatant and direct examples you will ever come across.  I think it's fair that people point that out - I'd certainly want to know if something I believed was mystical turned out to be a simple trick.

Yeah, that amount of tens is ridiculous.  I'd guess it's mainly people trying to bump up the average score of the game they're voting for, rather than people who genuinely believe it's worth a ten.  Darn cheating varmints.

I'll just put in a quick word in the defence of a 'most downloaded' category.  I don't think the point of this category is to give a guide to the best games available - that's what the 'best rated' category is for.  It's more of a way to gauge what response the games are getting, for whatever reason.  A sort of populist category and downloader demographic survey combined.

QuoteAlso, maybe there should be an indication of the Rogers won by games, to further help n00bs pick the best games, along with a "List by award winners" option

That's a great idea.

I was just reading a thread at the JA forum where one of the members commented on our games page thusly:

"Thanks Len, for the link and the website in general - it's a treasure trove! Shame they don't have a page of games most downloaded and highest rated. :)"

And I thought, 'well, yeah, a highest rated and/or most downloaded page is one of the things I look for when faced with a large collection of games that I'm completely new to'.

So I was wondering - would it be difficult to implement these things on the Games pages?  And does anybody else think it would be a good idea to put them in there?

Yeah, it's The Last Express.  The last game is:

Spoiler
Eric the Unready, a simplified text adventure which I highly recommend (it's on Underdogs)

Ah, forgot about the BS3 shortcut.  So it's 12 adventure thingies.

The Discworld pic isn't boxart, but everything else you said was right, so you've found 10 out of 12.  Well done with AMFV, too.

For this tremendous adventure knowledge, I gift you:

A ferocious, man-eating, fox-panda hybrid!

Have fun!

Here's mine:

A special prize if you can name all 11 adventures featured (two of them are sneaky).

Then CJ will be elevated to the same ranks as all those arms dealers and incompetent fat cats that get honoured.  Yay!

And what did you two do to get in there, huh?  HUH??
