Hey, that's a pretty good idea... Why didn't I think of that?  I think I will do something like that for my sprites.  I like the way it looks (except I'll use a little lighter blue on the outline of his slacks, the way you have it just makes it look too dark).

Normally, I'm very nitpicky too... working on all aspects of my game has sort of divided my subconscious up (you know, the scripting, the art, the sound fx, etc).  So I don't always grab all the little details.  But it's cool!

Here's a screenshot.  I have been using the character sprites (even though I'm not going to be using all of them, only a few of them... I guess I just made the others for practice).  At first, the sprites looked okay on the backgrounds, but lately I've been thinking that they need some depth, so I might try and do a little shading.

What do you mean by, "harder lines"?  Are you referring to how I use black lines to separate the features in the background?  I suppose that makes sense, I didn't use any dark colors to separate the sprite's features.

I guess it wouldn't kill me to do a little tampering, so that either the bg or the sprite match the other.

Wasn't that tough.  :)

I know it's not completely finished (I'm still going to add some furniture, etc).  But I just wanted to know what you think of it now.

Also... what do you suppose would be a good way to make the player realize that there's more to the room if they walk off the bottom of the screen?

Some games don't do anything, and finding the other rooms is hit-or-miss (like trying to find the kitchen in Caleb's Drunken Adventure).

I think I fixed the problem... it looks better now.  I fixed the stairs using a different method.  But I guess I'd like some feedback.  What do y'all think?  Is there anyplace in the picture that needs fixing, perspective-wise?

In my humble opinion:
No. 3 looks kind of... I don't know... generic?  (...I take that back... it sounds kind of insulting)  It looks too plain, is what I mean.

No. 2 looks like he's waiting to use the bathroom (probably to take a no. 2, *chuckle!* ;D).

No. 1 & 4 are at a tie.  I like no. 1 because it just looks good overall.  But no. 4... I like how you can make out his facial features better than no. 1.  But, his head looks a little too square.

See, the pic above is only a corner of a bg I'm working on.  It was only drawn to have one vanishing point... I'm just not really sure a second vanishing point would work...

...er... what I mean is that, I've drawn all of my backgrounds like that (with only one vanishing point), and I'm just trying to keep them all looking the same style.

Could you show me an example?

See, that's what I had done... but the steps came out looking like they bow out at you.

It's just the steps that I can't quite get to look right.

I guess I'm on my own for this one... I don't want anyone else to do my work for me.

I'll just go back and start from scratch! ;)

Sup?

I'm having a problem drawing in perspective in mspaint.  I was trying to draw these stairs, but they came out... well... not right.

Can anyone tell me what I did wrong?  Or, could anybody give me some tips as to what I could do different?  I used to be so good at this...

Hey, my bad bro... :-\  I'm not extremely web or computer savvy...

The reason I asked is because I'm having dial-up problems while trying to download the demo for BTS. ;)

General Discussion / Downloading tools.
Thu 29/01/2004 05:15:27
My Google and Yahoo searches have turned up nothing for what I'm looking for...

I'm looking for a downloading tool that will keep a record of the position a download is in when I log off the internet, and when I log back on, the download will pick up right where it left off...

I had a pop-up blocker that I heard about on Tech TV that had one of these on it... but it wasn't blocking any pop-ups, so I deleted it... and now I can't even remember what it was called...

Anyway, can anyone tell me about any tools like this (that are worth checking out)?

Yeah, I had a job very similar to that.  I worked at a plastic factory in Clintonville.  For 12 hours, 5:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., I trimmed flash off of the parts as they came out of the machine, and packaged them.  I especially didn't like the assembly lines where you had to make hand towel dispensers, t.p. dispensers, or those paper ass gasket dispensers.

It was a very tedious job, and it didn't pay so good, but they didn't even care that I am a dropout.  I think your qualifications to work there had to simply be that you were breathing. ;)

...I'm confused... but anyway....

I know how you feel, Lex.

I hate always having to keep in mind, "this b.s. puts a roof over my head and puts food on my plate"... especially when I'm so fed up with asshole bosses, monotonous & tedious tasks, co-workers who kiss the boss's ass and act like they're boss when the big guy isn't around, having to take the heat for other people's mistakes, and cliques in the workplace... around that time I feel like giving the boss the finger and walking out.

Well, good luck to ya. ;)

All in all.. I think a grad student could come up with this if they were skilled in the sciences and knew a lot about psychology. I

I agree.  And until a civil war starts I won't believe it.

Ditto.  Hey, it's supposed to happen sometime later this year, early next year, right?  So we'll see...

Now, don't get me wrong, as I was reading this, I started to wonder... "what if?"  Should I quit smoking?  Should I start building a bunker?  Should I go buy myself a bicycle?  The paranoid side of me said, "quite possibly".  But the logical side of me just tells me I get way too excited about nothing.

Now, what I want to know is (and spare me if I just missed this part or read some info wrong)... Why wasn't this guy afraid of causing a paradox (and in turn, ultimately causing the end of the universe)?  And what about the Chaos Theory?  He didn't care about disclosing this information to a public forum, because "he's not worried about our world line"... but isn't he supposed to be from OUR future?  So by being here in our present time, and his actions, he could actually be altering our future, and his present (possibly into a reality where he never existed, which in turn, would cause a paradox because he's here and he exists, yet at the same time he never will exist so that he could be here in our time)?  I may be rambling, but I have a general idea of what I'm talking about and I could go on forever.

It's creepy shit, and it does make me stop, take a step back, and appreciate all that I have, but at the same time I think it's horse shit.

A good thrill, I must say! ;)

BTW, Flippy... how did you ever come across this?

EDIT:  I just got back to thinking...

If it is some grad student just trying to manipulate and scare people just for laughs, "You suck, go get a life."  (wouldn't that qualify as some type of terrorism?  Attempting to cause mass hysteria?)

But, if somewhere off in the distant future, John Titor is reading this and laughing his ass off at me because I'm wrong, "Yer momma..."

Okay, I've been reading through the manual for about an hour now, and I just can't seem to find exactly what I've done wrong here....

function game_start() {
  // called when the game starts, before the first room is loaded
  SetInvDimensions(49,49);
  int jim_health = 10;
}

function repeatedly_execute() {
  // put anything you want to happen every game cycle here
*  if ((jim_health <= 10) && (jim_health >= 7)){
    AnimateButton (STATUSBAR,0,8,0,2,1);
    AnimateButton (STATUSBAR,1,9,0,2,1);
  }
  if ((jim_health <= 6) && (jim_health >= 4)){
    AnimateButton (STATUSBAR,0,8,1,2,1);
    AnimateButton (STATUSBAR,1,9,1,2,1);
      }
  if ((jim_health <= 3) && (jim_health >= 1)){
    AnimateButton (STATUSBAR,0,8,2,2,1);
    AnimateButton (STATUSBAR,1,9,2,2,1);
  }
  if (jim_health == 0){
    AnimateButton (STATUSBAR,0,8,3,2,1);
    AnimateButton (STATUSBAR,1,9,3,2,1);
  }

}

The * is where this error message comes up when I test the game:
Error (line 11): undefined symbol 'jim_health'

The writing in bold is the script I'm trying to make work.  I didn't know where to declare my variables, so I just declared them in the same area as SetInvDimensions.

Any ideas?

I don't really know much about my family tree...

My great, great, (great?) grandma's name was Anastasia Wanta.  She died at sea on the way over to the U.S. from Germany, and was buried at sea.  I know nothing of her husband.

My mom's last name, Geier, was thought to be the german word for "vulture" (I looked it up in the german dictionary... apparently not true...)

This is what I know about my dad's family tree:
My great grandpa came to the U.S. from Canada, and was French.

I know nothing about his (and my) last name, Mason.

I've actually been curious to build a family tree and see how far back I can go... and I have all the info I can get from my mom, I don't know what else I can do...

Correct.  I wasn't aware that AGS could do something like that.  I didn't see it in the manual, so I just thought I'd ask.  (but I feel like a dumbshit now... :()

Thanks for the help.   ;)
#819
Sure, it's in the manual under "Setting Up The Game".

This is what it reads:
token   replaced by
@INx@  number of inventory item x that the player has
@GIx@  the current value of GlobalInt x (used with SetGlobalInt/GetGlobalInt)

There are those variables, as well as "%s" and a few others I can't quite remember or find.

What about adding the values of two variables?  Do you know anything about that?
#820
1. Can someone tell me if it's possible to add the value of two variables together within the script?

2. I see there are variables, such as @GIx@, and the @SCORE@ variables that can be put into messages and will display your current score, or whatever, but are there such variables that you can use to plug a character's name, or an inventory item's name into a message.

3. One last thing, I declare my globalints/variables in the script header, correct?
