Thanks, honestly I've been kinda discouraged, cause While I'm decent with Sprites, I can't seem to get the hang on BG's. I mean I can do them if I keep cutting on them, but it doesn't come as easy as it should, I'm guessing this is right, or guessing this is what I should do, where I should know the method for those kinda things by heart.

Oh well. I have a thank-you.
I should prob put this in a new thread, but what they HEY.

Is it just me or does the thing 'auto-blur' on enlarge?

Still looks like sh...take mushrooms.
Oh well, keep trying till you get it right I suppose.
I think I'm tired or something, I'm cutting corners I guess... Jeez, this looks so much simpler till you sit down and DO it.
Bah.
-Sag.

I think I'll post some sprites or something, this is just...bah.

Okay here's the things I noticed need fixing.
(no texture on sidewalks)
(lamp is too large, /outta scale for the door)
The alleyway and the store front are focus, both, which is why I tried to center the camera.
The perspective makes scaling a problem, the sidewalk looks huge compared to the rest...
my bit of texturing for brick on the storefront is not constant, sorta /artsy (aka just added some quick lines)
That's just what I can see.

Going for an old, downtown sorta feel, maybe even like cobblestone streets, (which DEF need texture.)
Hope that clears things up for what I was going for.

This was a test shot, for a background I'm doing, what I want from you wonderful people is what I should do/missing/everything.
I'm going to 'redo' this background completely, so I need detailed suggestions!
Thanks a ton in advance, -SAG.

I think I'll post some sprites I've been working on later, this is just... frustrating.

What do you think of this? I did a paintover, (selfishly because I've always wanted to render a dungeon).
Feel free to use, paintover, use for reference, whatever you like.
Peace.

Are we making a definition between 'sprite' and 'pixel-art' here? I'd like to know if I can sprite a whole piece, complete with background, environment, etc etc?  "Edit 4 My Entry Here Later"

To Announce the WINNERS!
Drumroll, Please...

WINNER OF A BRONZE SPRITE JAM -FAIRY TROPHY!
Ben304

WINNER OF A SILVER SPRITE JAM -FAIRY TROPHY!
TheJBurger

WINNER OF A GOLD SPRITE JAM -FAIRY TROPHY!
Mordalles

Judge's Note:
Mordalles, JBurger. You two were pretty much tied for 1st, your dramatic lighting styles were both just amazing. In the end I chose Mordalles for first because of how creative his 'fish shaman' was. The wizard was expertly sprited, but was more generic. And Ben, if you set the bar so high to begin with on the next sprite jam, I'll either kiss you, or CRY!

Dark Waters
There was something about looking out at the open water. It continued on forever, an endless eternity sculpted from liquid glass.
Andrew held with bittersweet recollection a memory of himself years ago. He had been much as he was now, standing on the shore, looking out at a vast ocean.  But then he was a younger man, and the sea had seemed to him an endless domain, that with a ship he could roam at will. Through the eyes of a young, eager sailor it was not water at all, but freedom and adventure.
Now as he stood staring out at the sea, he realized that it was not freedom at all, but a great void that prevented him from leaving this godforsaken island. How long he had been marooned here, months, years, he could not remember.
He spent his evenings now, watching the horizon. Holding onto some forlorn hope that he might spot a ship. That perhaps that great love of his life, the ocean would not entirely betray him to this distant and abandoned shore. How he dreamed of being rescued.
The sun fell sleepily behind tremulous clouds. Dark clouds that brought with them the promise of powerful and fearful storms, the kind that had wrecked him upon these shores long ago.
Andrew began to hear something, a voice, carried on the stormy winds. "Andrew..." it called." Andrew come back into me..."
Andrew screamed, cursed himself. How weak he was, he was letting this isolation drive him mad! He could bear no more. He knew what he must do. There was a bluff, overlooking the water not far from here. He would go there, he would end this!
The storm roared above as he made his way up to the bluff, soon he was there, overlooking the dark waters below. "Come back to me..." the sea called from below." Come back to me..." He prepared himself, and leapt from edge into the water.  He hit the water with such force, that it knocked him unconscious. Dark waters drew him in, and at last he would have his peace...

I mean you've got Ben, Jburger, Mordalles with these beautiful detailed sprites.
Then you've got Kadji-San (BradN) with this scenic sprite.
And YET, Miguel's entry made me laugh so hard, I thought was so funny.
GOD YOU PEOPLE ARE GONNA MAKE IT HARD TO PICK!

(for anyone whose not getting the above ^ it's a HEAVY dose of SARCASM, with a HINT of ENVY!)

Thanks EVERYBODY, Especially InCreator, ya'll  have been a dream. To answer question, I've not scrapped the drawing, or the thread, I am merely pre-occupied with other things. (life can be so hectic, eh.) But I think I've learned alot here, it may take a while for me to put it into practice however, (aforementioned busy.)  ;D The fence, everything was eyeballed, It was just to see if I could sit down, and with little hassle create a somewhat convincing background. The several things you've pointed out, has obviously shown the flaws.
What 3-D application, would you suggest to create reference drawings, such as the one you posted. That would be more than handy to somebody like me. Thanks everybody, I'll try to post more later.

Yeah I'm sorry for not adding the grass beforehand, my mind must have been totally somewhere else... As soon as I fix it, I'll update.
P.S. you're totally right about the bench thing, I overlayed my char sprite and changed the size to match perspective, it'll make it look AWFUL!
#136
OH MY GOSH! BA DUMP DA DA DA BAAAA DUMPP! (star wars theme which I am singing).

Becky was obviously using a heavy dose of Sarcasm, on an earlier post. She doesn't really hate straight ppl, she was trying to make a point.

Becky...THANK YOU...
BTW, we don't think only about sex, or talk only about sex, or any such thing.
No more so than anyone else does...
We're stable, normal human beings...
I'm still not sure if children is a good idea for gay couples, not because we couldn't handle it.
But because, a prejudiced society has made it too hard.
Kid's have enough to go through, without taking blows from others because 'daddy's a fag'.
Shame but that's the kinda world we live in, a world WITHOUT progress.
