I think the texture on the back of the couch is a little strong, but otherwise it's shaping up nicely.

General Discussion / Re: The Meaning of Life

My personal philosophy of life comes from the following lyrics by Kid Rock:
"You can look for answers, but that ain't fun/ Now get in the pit, and try to love someone!"

Perhaps his beneficent wisdom can be a guide to you all as well.

Looks professional to me.

Since the bottom part of the gui has a golden border, I think you should do a similar thing with the top "Save/Load" part.  Right now it seems kind of an abrupt transition from background to gui.  Also, I agree that the top part seems a little bright.

And on a side note, that background is shaping up nicely.  Kudos.

More:

A biochip that you scraped out of some dead guy
A defibrillator for reviving injured friends/zapping enemies/overloading electrical equipment
A remote-controlled mosquito -you could use it to get blood samples from suspected criminals, or infect it with a virus so it kills any guards it bites

your turn.

The Rumpus Room / Re: Cheesy subtitle for AGS

AGS: Anonymous Gay Sex
Altered Genome Society
Autonomous Gorilla Simulation

AGS: home of the extremely boring subtitle thread

Absoutely possible.  The only real difference between a CYOA and a standard adventure game is that, instead of writing one long well-crafted story, you have to write maybe three or four longish stories and a ton more "mini"stories.  Of course, unless you have very modest goals, this could easily lead to tripling or quadrupling the workload of your game, so it could be difficult to execute the idea.

However, if you browse around the forums a bit, you'll find that an esteemed gentleman named Snake is already working on a CYOA-style game.

I recommend you download AGS, read through the manual, and get to it, young man!

Good luck, etc. etc.

I think the midground buildings should have gray outlines, like the lamppost has in your most recent edit.

Looks good so far, though.  Kudos.

I was bored, so I reworked your wand-thing:

Hope that gives you some ideas.

Cheers.

Dunno what this is, but it damn near killed me.

It's faster than it looks, and the two pointy things in front spit acid.  It can also whip you with its eyestalks, which is surprisingly painful.

By the way, this is what the little bugger looked like after I got through with him:

Damn straight.

General Discussion / MAKE MY GAMEZ
Sun 22/07/2007 04:45:31
Hi! I'm new here, but I'm so excited about the amazeing bizness offer I'm going to offer you that I thought it would be best to dive rite into the forums without reading all those tedious "rules" first.  (Rules are for squares, anyways.)

My company, Take No Prisoners Electrotainment (or Tekno Pee for short), is a legitamate company, with a
website
and everything!  We're currently working on several multiplatform MMO/RPG/SHMUP-hybrid games, but they're all in the hush-hush preAlpha phase, so you won't find any screenshots or character bios or other such evidence that those things do, in fact, exist.  But trust me, we (and by we, I mean a bunch of Venezuelan child programmers in my basement) are working our fingers to the bone on them!  Literally!

Now, I'm the president of a game company, but I can't be bothered to come up with my own game ideas, so I thought the best thing to do would be to exploit utilize the imagination of you forum people!  That's what the internet is for, right?  The glorious cooperation of individuals whereby you all give me stuff for free, and I get rich!  Be a part of the American dream!  My dream!
All you have to do is provide me with a few ideas to get started.  Don't worry: you'll still own the intellectual property.  I'll just be renting it from you for an undisclosed amount of time and keeping all the profits. I'm not a lawyer, but my cousin went to Law School for a year before he got busted for dealing meth (long story) and he told me that that's totally how copywrite law works.  Like, for realz.

I know what your thinking: "This all sounds unbelieveable!  So unbelieveable that I don't believe it!"  Well, believe this: I'm not a faceless corporate overlord with a god complex who wants to suck you dry of intellectual property and spit out your shattered husk on a pile of baby skulls.  No, I'm JUST LIKE YOU!  Just "one of the guys"- I even made my own game back in high school before I became too good for that sort of thing.  CHECK IT OUT!
Truly you will respect me once you see my obvious coding superiority!

So, too sum up: My vast bizness experience + all your ideas = CASH MONEY!
We can't loose!

(Off-topic: kudos to the moderators for being patient when this kind of shite crops up.  I don't know how you guys do it. /off-topic.)

First I started off with a very rough sketch, just to test out a coloring technique I wanted to try:

I quite like this sketch actually, except for the lack of a horizon and other distance cues.  It has a nice coloring book feel, I think.

Anyway, I then jumped right into the main piece, and a couple of hours in Artgem later, boom:

It probably would have turned out better if I had used some reference, but this was just for fun and practice.  There are still a few things that bug me slightly, like the emptiness of it and the lack of definition in the branches, but unless I decide to start over from scratch, this will be my entry.

Oh, and Lavern always liked jungles, hence the background.
And I am very lazy, hence the abrupt description of Lavern.  :P

How about a cooler instead of a fridge?  More practical.

And since you brought up classic adventure characters, how about a book called Larry Laffer's Failproof Pick-up Lines.  Use it on all female NPCs for humorous (and disastrous) consequences.

And now, the part where I pretend to be original:
Inventory items that affect all other inventory items.  The simplest idea I had was: pick up the "sand" item, and the phrase "This is like, covered in sand" will be added before the descriptions of all other inventory items.
Here's an idea that's harder to implement: you're a spacedude on a bio-ship.  All the ship components you pick up have living tissue.  One of the items you can pick up is infected with a virus, and once it is added to your inventory, it starts to infect all your other items, one by one.  Infected items wouldn't necessarily be useless (because everyone hates walking deads, right), but their function would change, so you'd have to solve a few puzzles differently.

I'm not really qualified to comment on realistic art like this (my own techniques being, what's the word... oh, inferior).  However, I thought I'd throw my two cents in and say that I think this background is much more dynamic and exciting than the last composition.  I think it's the strong diagonals that pull you into the picture and make you feel like you're there in the room, and not just looking at a game screen.

Good work so far and good luck

Here's an idea:

A meditation handbook.  Use it on yourself, and you can astral project your soul out of your body.  Your soul could travel over areas that your player character could not, and even go through certain walls.

Not sure how to script this, except maybe making a character that always followed the main character from room to room, whose walking image was a blank cell until replaced at the appropriate time with a ghost image.

Talking plant
Hoverboard
Girdle
T-shirt with a bullseye on it (give to an annoying NPC at a firing range and watch the fun)
Reverse text parser (instead of converting typed words into actions, click it on game objects to convert them to words- for example, a barking poodle would become the word "dog."  How would this be in any way useful in a game?  Dunno.)
#178
A didgeridoo
A lightning bolt
The true name of God
A vowel (as in "I would like to buy a vowel," or maybe you meet a fantasy character with no vowels in his name, and he'd really like one to make his name easier to pronounce)
Estrogen
Automatic sex change device

That's enough for now.
(Your turn, internet!)

Sorry for digging up this old post, I just wanted to point out that the AGS Resource page still links to version 0.84, the version that doesn't work in AGS 2.72.
