Thanks everyone for the critique on my monkey/bear/sheep, and many thanks to Progz for the paintover. Lots of things to think about. I'll give it another go during one of my lunchbreaks, or maybe at the weekend.

Out of interest this was my original go at spriting the character for a game...

...maybe less like a sheep, but a lot harder to draw and (probably) animate.

Finished it, after a couple of tries. Nice job, and I really like the idea of having everything set in one (AGS) room with an NPC wandering around. It's still a little rough around the edges though, can't help thinking it'd flow better if you could somehow link the upstairs with the downstairs by a walkable area, but that's a minor thing. I enjoyed it anyway.

Couple of bugs though:
Spoiler
As soon as you use the hammer with the picture or nail you lose it, regardless of whether you take the picture down, so if you use the hammer before the pen the game becomes unwinnable. Also there doesn't seem to be a way to quit without closing the window or Alt+x ing out?

Kudos on the speed options though, very useful and very necessary.

never bought the map!!!

But... but... but...

Guybrush wouldn't let me into the woods to search for the treasure without the map. How did you get around that one?

Ah yes, that works. Yeah, you've convinced me.

Ok, I'm really trying to prove this isn't a walking dead...
Spoiler
I literally went through my entire inventory, trying to put everything in the pot. Yeah, that includes the diary I mentioned before, and also the feather pen. However Guybrush wouldn't put the map to the Melee island treasure/dancing lessons in because he'd paid good money for them.

After the pot explodes I can use them with the fire because "Come to think of it, they're just dancing lessons"

Not working for you?
#409
Ok, I've now played up to that point ;)

Spoiler

Go into the captain's cabin and open the draw on the left of the desk. Look in it to get the log book. Go to the kitchen and use the log book in the fire
[close]

Guybrush refuses to light the minutes for me, before or after putting things in the pot, because I can't actually use them with anything. Seen as you don't have to get the minutes (you can accept them for 2 pieces of eight) there has to be another source of fire.

Spoiler

Oh, and as DanielH suggests, the feather pen from the captain's cabin also works

Stupot, Rockchick and lipaoklipa were all interested

Not to put a dampener on all this, but they were expressing interest in a topic defined as
Quote
Write about anything you like in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy style.
Whereas this topic is
Quote
Write about anything you like in the style of a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy entry
Its a small difference, but quite a lot more restrictive in terms of content. I'm not saying its a bad topic, but offering one thing then changing it might explain why people seem to have lost interest. That or because its really hard to write like Douglas Adams did.

*ANYWAY...*

Adventure

Adventure is a much sort after activity, frequently desired by such diverse peoples as hitchhikers, heroes and post office employees. Interestingly enough the definition of adventure differs widely depending on the individual in question. A hitchhiker will often look for adventure involving sleeping rough, spending no money and getting the dirt of 15 different planets under their fingernails, while a hero might expect to strip to their underwear and use an oversized sword to remove themselves from a large animal's digestive tract. Post offices usually satisfy their employees by producing new sheets of commemorative stamps each year.

It is perhaps because of the unclear interpretation of the activity that adventure seekers regularly find themselves in situations that are somewhat different to their expectations. A bag of letters is little comfort should you find yourself having to sleep in the dirty hold of a Arcian interstellar hauler (the Arcians being known throughout the galaxy for their almost constant yodelling), hitchhikers rarely posses a knife and fork, let alone weapons suitable for combating the salivating Gannute of Redientia IV, and burly men and women in undergarments are seldom impressed by the 'Teapots of Yesteryear' collection. The exact reason these mixups occur so frequently is unknown: many blame the vagueness of the small print in adventure holiday advertisements, although there is also a growing belief amongst holiday reps that fate is simply hormonal.

Recent studies into the effects of adventure on postal workers indicate that anything more intense than an encounter with a loud dog and a lunchtime trip to the pub often proves fatal.

Now someone else please enter - I don't have a clue what topic to pick should I win.

I've been playing around with these sprites for the last few days and I like how they've turned out, but I thought before I had a go at animating them I'd upload to see if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions...

I'm especially unsure about the line above his stomach - I think it looks good in the front view but doesn't work in the side views. Also do you think he looks an interesting character and would you download a game with him in? All C&C and paintovers welcome.

Thanks guys!

WinRAR - Trial, illegal after 30 days, keeps asking you to register.
7Zip - Free, open source, handles the same extensions.

Pretty easy choice in my opinion

Added.

...I just noticed most of the games are 1 or 2 MB in size (4.5 max) but the three for October's MAGS are the largest at 7 and a half, 10 and 17 MB. What is it about the Stone Age that attracts big file sizes?

Seen as I'm actually going to play through the entries and vote this year, I figured I'd make a list while I downloaded to encourage others to do the same...

If the difference between the old and new versions is made obvious enough, couldn't the two coexist?

I think that the old version continuing is fundamentally incompatible with the idea of a reboot (and, mind you, I prefer the former).

I meant it more as a temporary thing than a permanently having two versions - there's no reason to just stop RoN, throw out all the information and tell anyone halfway through a game that they can't finish it unless they make it compatible with the new version. Work could be started on version 2 with anyone planning a new game strongly recommended to use it, while version 1 is allowed to stop on its own accord.

Instead of a long-winded wiki entry...

A great idea, and I agree that I'd be much more likely to download a game than browse through loads of wiki pages. Would it be kept up to date though? Would you have it developed by a small core team? If it did interest people in developing RoN again then it'd get out of date quite quickly.

I also don't think its a replacement for a good, detailed wiki. Suppose someone just wanted to check a fact or two about a character or location, or search for something specific. That'd be hard to find in a game. While it might be a good introduction you can't rely on it for more than just an overview of the RoN universe.

Maybe RoN's wiki needs building, along with some general formatting rules, then suggest that its game authors' responsibilities to update the relevant pages when they make a game?

It does leave anyone who’s in the midst of game production to either attempt to get their game finished before the reboot date, or go back and start reworking their game to conform to a rebooted universe.

Doesn't that depend on how the reboot is done? If people start working on RoN 2.0 (or whatever) new games can be RoN 2 games while people could still make 'original' RoN games if they wanted. If the difference between the old and new versions is made obvious enough, couldn't the two coexist?

Personally I'd like the reboot approach; I've never gone near making a RoN game for worry of misusing characters or locations, or messing up a time-line, and not wanting to do hundreds of games-worths research.
