Yeah, that all sounds about right. You could go into add/remove programs, check the show updates option then look for an update to do with your webcam, remove it, run windows update and see if it wants you to install it again, but maybe messing around with windows updates isn't a great idea. Depends how much it bothers you, but it sounds safe to just ignore it

Windows updates are causing huge amounts of problems at the moment, Microsoft are trying to get them out on a monthly cycle and aren't testing them properly. I work in an IT support company and we get PCs that have broken because of updates all the time.

I wouldn't *run* anything in the folder, but opening the folder and having a look at the contents might give you some idea of what it is

I also doubt very much that its a virus. Certainly if I wrote a virus I wouldn't stick it in My Documents (if that's the place you're referring to) with a strange name like that. As Paper Carnival says its likely to be some form of temporary file, either left over from a something you downloaded and clicked 'open' rather than 'save' to, or an installer, or yeah, something a currently running program is doing. It may well just disappear when you restart your computer.

I just ran a search of my PC for similar files and folder names and got 211 results, although admittedly none in the root of My Documents. Make a restore point if you're really worried, then open it up and have a look what's inside

VinceXII should start making approval seals, give us all something to work towards :) I was going to do all the graphics before starting coding, making a ridiculously over the top interface was the result of me getting fed up 6 backgrounds in...

@Eggie
I was a little worried about how easy that was going to be to make, but in the end all I really had to do was rotate things on separate layers, then export 20-odd bitmaps. Any animation that doesn't involve redrawing is a plus in my book

@Dualnames
Thanks, hopefully it plays well too!

@robvalue
Thanks! The commentary was a lot of fun to do, definitely something I'll consider in any further games

@AlbinoPanther
Hmm, not heard of that one

Thanks for the comments guys, makes it all worthwhile ;)

Also, for OD's game... anything that appears in text doesn't stay up. Like, dialogue is impossible to read because it's flashed up and then vanishes. It's impossible to play the game this way. :( Anyone else having that problem?

Erm... none of my testers did ;). There's a text speed option in the options menu, but even on the fastest setting its still fairly readable. You could try playing with that anyway. Anyone else getting this problem?

Rad game, by the way. Annoyingly so.
Heh thanks, the feeling's mutual ;D Loved your entry, great art and animation and genuinely funny too. Nice work!

Right, now I'm gonna go play Rock Rock Rock...

Edit: Great work guys! Its short but full of nice touches like the bird flying around and when you use the fire :D. Especially liking the floppy feet walkcycle Indie, puts my 2 frame one to shame. Hope the course doesn't suffer too badly... oh, and cool music Dualnames, very atmospheric.

I'm glad I have an excuse not to vote in this one...

If its going to be obvious what verb you should use to complete a puzzle, and if extra verbs will add to the depth of the interactions and the game I'd say go for it. If you have one verb that only gives the default response except in one situation, or if the difficulty of your puzzles comes from trying to figure out whether you should push/pull/use etc an object then that's approaching bad game design and you'll make Vince Twelve cry.

in DOTT, Hoagie had to push the bed in order mess it up, getting the soap and so on...

This is a good example. The player's thought process should go something like this:
"I need to make the maid stay longer in this room"
"Maybe I could make more of a mess so she spends longer cleaning"
"Perhaps I can mess up the bed?"
If they then try to use the bed and nothing happens (because they should have pushed/pulled it) they might abandon that idea and get stuck. That's the sort of thing you want to avoid. In this case the same thing happens whether you push, pull or use the bed

I played a Flash game that would have qualified for this (except it wasn't an AGS game, of course) not so long ago, where there were various levels and you (a caveman) had to complete a task at each level (make fire, woo a cavewoman and start a family, etc). Did anyone else play it and can anyone remind me what it was called? It wasn't OgOg but it was similar.

Is StoneAge Sam the one you're thinking of?

Interesting article. I love some of those pieces of artwork, Full Throttle had a very interesting world and its a shame it never got expanded on.

Heh, thanks for those links. Might go and install some more add-ons into Firefox in a bit then.

Speaking of add-ons, does anyone know of one that un-blurs enlarged pictures in FireFox 3?
That's the only thing stopping me from upgrading right now.
Nope and its really annoying.

By the way, Google have fixed their EULA to be less Nazi, and it applies retrospectively to all of us who didn't read it properly and clicked OK.

I installed Chrome today to try it out and I don't remember having to agree to anything... maybe I've just got so used to clicking through licence agreements. Some day a software developer will take my house because I clicked 'I agree' to something.

Anyway, played with it a bit and wasn't that impressed. Felt rather Firefox-like. There were two things I did like though, the incognito mode (that doesn't write to the history and deletes cookies and temporary files when you close it) and the way you can resize some text input boxes. Guess I'll come back when its out of beta.

On the other hand most games with hotspots have a status bar at the bottom of the screen to tell you what they are, which means the player (or me at any rate) spends the entire game staring at a line of text instead of the graphics. If you do go with hotspots my suggestion would be binding their description to the mouse somehow.

A nice intro, a funny dialogue, a room complete with walkable areas/walkbehinds. That are important steps and often fun enough to get that motivation kicking in.

AGS should have one of those progress bars that fills up every time you do something new. Add a second playable character for 2%!

If you completely format the hard drive or if you format the Windows partition and don't have a restore partition then yes, you will need a Windows CD to reinstall. If you have a restore partition on your hard drive as I and Limping Fish mentioned then no, you won't need a Windows CD. If the restore CD works you also will not need a Windows CD, but I would recommend trying to restore from any restore partition you may have on your hard disk before trying that CD.

General Discussion / Re: Help with imageready!
Thu 07/08/2008 12:10:22
Bound to be, its whether you can find it or not ;D. I've not used ImageReady, but I do know (for example) that the default paste in Photoshop (ctrl+v) pastes into a new image and ctrl+e pastes onto the current layer in the current image. There's probably a different option and shortcut *somewhere* on the edit menu.
