Not sure if it's the kind of beta testing you want, but i'm a programmer of web applications by profession. I could help out in trying to find holes in security, cheating oppurtunities as well as checking for valid markup etc.
Besides, the project seems like fun! Any chance of programming contests?  :)

General Discussion / Re: Forum Clock Help
Mon 01/12/2008 20:41:08
The time that the forum clock displays is most likely based on the system time of the server this forum is hosted on.
To get the time adjusted, you'd need to contact someone who has administrative privileges on the server.

By the way, it's not a good sign if the clock is off by this much in a relatively small period of time (1.5 years, muha!) . Maybe the internal battery of the server needs replacing.

Up until i began my career as a webdeveloper, i never really cared about browsers as long they would display a website for me, it was fine.
Now that i am required to work by known standards and still have things work and display the way they should cross-browser i really detest IE for it's multitude of annoying bugs, proprietaty features that break standards and generally being a pain is the ass to use as anything more then a bare bones browser.

For me (speaking as a web-developer) Firefox is the only way to go, since it has a multitude of plugins that allow for a more efficient workflow. Plugins such as web-developer, firebug and html-tidy, along with the great javascript error messages (also found in opera) greatly increase the pace at which i can develop websites and we-applications. That is, right untill i hit a bug that only happens in IE, and then i'm still screwed.

I don't have anything against Opera at all, i use it at home on occasion too. It just can't offer me the great plugins that help me in my line of work.

General Discussion / Re: I hate what I do

You say you owe yourself something. It also sounds like you're trying to prove yourself to yourself by means of showing yourself what your creativity can do.
If you can, i'd like you to answer 2 questions to yourself (not on this forum) as honestly as you can:
1) What purpose does this proving yourself have? (maybe in relation to your future)
2) If the way you are expressing your creativity now doesn't fulfill this purpose, how else do you think you could fulfill it?

Boogie on!

Somehow i really doubt that you really are a company. Companies don't usually ask for volunteers with a promise of a remotely possible paycheck. If companies don't have skills inhouse to produce, nor the capital to buy those skills, they go to the bank for a loan, or find investors to finance the purchase of labour and skills.

Judging by the list of openings you have, i'd say all you have right is a game in concept. Storyline, puzzles and character descriptions. And to make your game you need almost a complete team.
At this point in production, a website is the very least of your trouble. Finding people to work for you and getting production going is much more important right now.
A website is worth nothing if you have nothing to show for it but a vague and distant release dates and a couple of background sketches.

And lastly, i took quite some offence to your repeated (implicid and explicit) references to people getting paid in the future. (employees, getting paid, hire).  If you're a company you pay your employees. period. Where you get the funds from is not concern of employees.
If you can't pay them, don't call yourself a company and call people on the team staff, volunteers or teammembers.

It's not my intention to critisize your game, your abilities or your person. All i am critisizing is the presentation you made, as it is mostly based on willingness to believe.

Good luck with your project(s), i really hope to enjoy your next production.

SmartFTP, CuteFTP and WS_FTP are all well used programs.

Here's quite an extensive list of available ftp proggies.

I've always found it equally admirable when you see people fighting against the odds or when you see people finding the courage to accept the inevitable.

Maybe you should realise that what you are experiencing here is the loss of someone to admire, even though in my eyes they're still admirable. But that, in all accounts, it is your loss you are mourning, not theirs.
That doesn't make it any less painfull, though but realising that grief and mourning are ego based emotions may make it easier to deal with the pain and loss.

Strength to you all the same, though.

For those of you actually contemplating shaving a cat, be prepared for chaos, pain and a trip to the doctor.

If kindergarten taught me one thing while painting, it's this: No matter what color you're trying to mix, you'll end up with brown.

So that's what i'd call the average color of the universe.

Seriously though, how can they even take an average of a color? And in what way will it be calculated? Wavelength, additive coloring, deductive coloring (forgive me my possible screwups in teminology, i'm no expert)

I guess i better read that article now before i'm told i'm an ignorant fart that asks questions already answered in given info..

A very nice background indeed! The absence of detailed shading gives a very calm and simple look which i really like in adventures games. It's easier to spot objects and important places when everything is clearly defined as opposed to some antialiased backgrounds i've seen.

I have 2 gripes and the only came to me after staring at it for a while, wondering what it was that felt wrong. Usually, to me anyway, that means something is off perspective-wise. And in this case that's exacly what it was.
- The right edge of the porch ceiling (hope you know what i mean) is off compared to the left side. The right side should be less steep instead of steeper than the left side.
- The supporting posts of the porch should be perfectly straight down, unless of course they are indeed slanted or crooked.

Keep up the good work though, this bg is very nice. And although it looks really simple, i'd have a hard time creating something like this.

Another thing to check if both the network card have an ip address in the same range. If there isn't a device that gives out local IP addresses (called a DHCP server) then you'll have to configure both cards manually.

PHP can also be used to compile stand-alone programs.

PHP as a compiler? Could you link me up with some more info?

Thank you so much, Vel! That was great to listen to and the most original Xmas present i ever had!
I am used to listening to music while working on the computer and normally the music stays in the background of my attention. But your album had me staring mindlessly into the distance a couple of times (that's a good thing! :) )

I very much like your voice on the lower parts. It tends to get a bit unstable/held back when going up, but nothing that would devaluate the experience you gave me.

Thank you again. And though a little late to wish you a merry xmas in return, a very happy newyear party for you!

I wish crab salad wasn't on the menu each and every Xmas at 9:30 in the morning. If humans were really meant to eat that they'd have a mouthfull of crab every morning when they wake up and still have gills in stead of lungs.

All i want for Xmas brunch is a couple of croissants, a cuppa tea and everyone shutting up about how happy en generous they are feeling.

Still, there are good thing about Xmas. Snow is good and it's been quite a few years since we had that at Xmas, so i suppose this year will statistically be the one where we WILL have one. The great fire last year burned down all of our family games, so all we're left with is poker or gin, wich are both perfectly acceptable to me. With the cold winter and all girls in the street will be much more inclined to accept my warming hug as a friendly gesture as opposed to screaming bloody murder and trying to kick you where it hurts. And, as a real Xmas treat, i get to see my favourite (and only) nephew i am uncle to. A single smile from him is worth all the social responsibilties Xmas brings.

Merry Xmas in advance everyone. Enjoy it anyway you can :)

The consumption of certain liquids is forcing me to be completely honest so you can trust me on this: Inspiration is only 5% the entire process.
Once you get an idea that YOU can get excited about, it is worth exploring. If you've explored the idea and are still excited about it you have a potential game on your hands.

From this point on, everything you do is a gamble. Even if you think after careful concideration that your game is revutionary, it may not be. If you keep thinking it's going to be the next AGS corker, it may not be. Keep telling yourself this: "If there was somthing that kept me interested while i thought out the details, there WILL be someone that will find this game worth playing. DON'T have the ego to think that your opinion is unique. If you thought about it one way at a certain point, chances are you'll be able to find a public who thinks likewise.

My last point should be your mantra throughout the entire game-development process; "My game is worth making." It is inevitable that at some point you'll start doubting your skills, creativity, insight, being enough to be able to make a decent game. GOBBLEDEGOO!!
There are enough games out there that deserve merit on their concept alone, not their execution. Trus me, a good idea is the most inportant thing you need. The rest will come to you via the critics lounge and lots of practice. If, after caferull thought, you game still seems worth creating, then it is. No matter what!

Indeed, at some point during development there will be a stage where you question the point of it all, and if you'll ever be able to offer the players the experience you had envisioned. But trust me, once you've passed the conceptual stage and are still certain of your idea being a good one, go for it all the way and don't give up untill you have released at least something.

Even if it doesn't end up to be the new buzz around the AGS forums, people here are friendly enough to offer you their critisisms and alternatives in a way that can help you develop your style and skill without the need to feel embarressed about yourself. So don't keep yourself from releasing someting you don't deem worthy, it may be the best thing you ever did!

Good luck!

General Discussion / Re: Freepay?

IF it worked (i don't know if it does) it would be a nice way to provide some entertainment at a next *ittens meeting. The host signs up and everyone who will attend signs up using the host as a referrer. The host gets the playstation which he/she'll bring along to *ittens :)

I have no experience whatsoever with these things though. Most of the time one of the conditions is: "Participant must live in US or Canade in order to be eligeble (sp) for the friggin playstation"

That's not a caravan, it's an egg with wheels!

Caravans are a great way to get somewhere without it costing too much in hotels/cabins/whatever. Cramped as some may be, i guess the intimate feeling i get (social intimacy i mean) outweighs a lot of the cons for me. There's only a couple of types of holidays that i would have a problem with, and a holiday in a camper isn't one of them if(holiday.days < 25)

Quote from: Obi on Thu 26/10/2006 11:35:35Do you think Caravans are shit? I do.
But why did you buy it then? Peer pressure? The neighbours have got one too? :P

Critics' Lounge / Re: horny little alien.

I'm not quite sure which part of him is making the 'Grr' sound. Thinking about that for more than a second is a bit... no, VERY disturbing to me. Then again, he IS an alien.

I do have a small point of critisism though. The fingers of his right hand (our left) seem to be broken, or with huge claws or fingers? I'm not quite sure how to look at them.

Other than that, great sprite!
