Dare I say it? I think this is an even better idea than the TongueWarmer itself!

I would agree! But if we have the technology to warm the tongues of individual bacteria we might aswell kill them and get rid of that horrbile smelly french cheese!

I'm quite disappointed at people who instantly tried to point out the design flaws in my wonderful idea. This isn't the Critics Lounge!
The enthousiasm i was expecting would have helped to spread the word, now i'm sure it will stay confined to this forum..

Oh well, back to the drawing board i guess.

Oh man, i got really curious and so i click the link to 'create a pocketmod' and then it says Service Temporarily Unavailable. Now i'll never know.

And now the whole site is down.

Gather round my friends, for you have been chosen to witness the premiere of an idea so simple, yet so revolutionary that it may very well change world as we know it.

Within days of this publication, websites around the world will publish this ridiculously cunning idea as being their own and scientists and companies will push their patent experts to their limits in trying to obtain a monopoly in the practical uses of my idea. It's all good though. As long the world becomes a better place because of it, i'll be a happy man. Just remember you read it here first.

As you all very well know, cosmopolitans as you are, our society is like an insatiable beast with a hunger for energy so big that it is only surpassed by our hunger for power. Fossil fuels like oil and coal are consumed at an alarming and ever increasing rate. And while international agreements try to limit the exhaust of toxic fumes, the actual consumption of fuels is still growing.

We need to find an answer, a solution that will make us change our logic and way of thinking. Something that will render our attempts to save the environment of the last few decades completely ridiculous. And, humble as i may be, i can't stay silent any longer. For i believe i have such an answer.

The TongueWarmer
[/size]

The concept is simple and inspired by the well known fact of 'relative thermal sensory experience' or R.T.S.E for short.
This states that temperatures perceived are dependant on the surface temperature of our body. To clarify:

Suppose you are taking a shower. The water is a comfortable temperature of 38 C/100 F.
Now you raise the temperature to 40 C/ 104 F and further to 42 C/ 108 F. You will feel the sensation of the water getting warmer. This sensation typically lasts only a couple of seconds untill your skin temperature is raised to almost match the water temperature.
Now, lower the water temperature again to 38 C/100 F and you will shiver. The water will seem cold while initially, at the start of the shower, you perceived water of the same temparature to be comfortably warm. You have exeprienced two different water temperatures while the actual water temperature was identical.

After having explained this, i'm convinced you'll be impressed by the simplicity of my idea of the tonguewarmer.
Instead of cooling vast amounts of liquids and solids, all you have to do is warm up your tongue and you'll perceive the temperature of the food or drink as cooler than it actually is.
Wouldn't it be far more energy efficient to just warm up a piece of flesh, not even weighing an ounce, than it is to cool the entire contents of a fridge?

A 5 Watt tonguewarmer will be so much friendlier to your power-bill than a 140 Watt fridge.  A tonguewarmer that you'll only have to turn on when you eat or drink. This against the 24-hour use of a fridge.

My friends, you are in awe, i can tell. It really is this simple. Anyone could have gotten this idea. I was merely one of many who could have received this blessed gift. Now that i have shared with you the wonder that is the tonguewarmer, i ask a favour in return.
Spread the word! Let the masses know and see that there IS a solution. Encourage webmasters to publish this story. Let the corporate world know there is money to be made on this. And realise, that your life, is about to get better.

Hehm sorry to bring it to you dude. But those properties like staying clean and not absorbing odors and the like are properties of almost all new pieces of clothing. After washing it a couple of times they lose these properties.

They'll still feel warm and cozy though  ;D

Thanks for sharing you discovery with us. It has made me think about voicing my ultimate solution to energy shortages.  (Think tonguewarmers)

Something i learned from fellow critiquers:

What you use to 'fill up the picture' is a great oppurtunity to show what kind of people live there, what kind of society it is etc.

For example:
- If the people living there were ruled by an evil dictator there might be a high-tech guillotine in the open space to keep the residents oppressed.
- If the people there are traders there might be a marketplace where all sorts of stuff is sold.
- If noone is living there at all, anything that would be there would be broken and worn.

So whatever you think of to put there, be aware that it will give your players some info on what kind of people live there and their culture. Make sure it fits the story.

Good luck on the game!

Yikes! 1GB? that's gonna be one helluva download. It looks like it's worth it though. I Sure hope this will be a bit-torrent download.

If i may give you a suggestion: In a couple of weeks place a music sample on here for people to listen to. You've proven beyond a doubt that the game is going to be visually excellent, if you place a piece of music that will fit the same mood you set with the images you'll keep people hot for the game and convince them even more to play your game.

And after this game, do yourself and your team a favour and go make some huge $$$ publishing your games :)

Hi all, i've been working on a little programming project the past week. It's a little web-based system that allows a friend of mine and me to work on (short) stories together but independantly from eachother.

During my 'contemplation hours' that i take while programming i thought that might be a nice tool for you lot to use. Especially when working in a team where its members aren't geographically close to eachother, having a way to build up such a game-creation document online would be an ideal way for everyone to be on par what's going on.

The concept is simple:
Create a project on the system, give it a title and a description and within this project you can place entries.

Entries can be placed in categories like 'storyline', puzzles, character etc. Everyone with access to the project can submit entries to add to the storyline, puzzles or whatever, or use the system as a reference when creating puzzles, artwork or animations.

At the moment the system is halfway complete in the form i had intended it to be (the joined writing project), but with a couple of modifications it can be easily adapted to suit the needs of an adventure making community.

All that is needed for it is a webserver with PHP and MySql.

Lemme know if you all would find this usefull.

That obsolutely sucks Yak. I never liked my borther in law either, but at least he's been decent to my sis. I can't imagine how it must feel to be that powerless while you see your loved ones get hurt.

Normally i wouldn't be one to advice any drastic measures.
However, your sister is in a situation that:
1) Will NOT go away by itself
2) Will NOT go away by being there for her when she it being hit again
3) Disables her to actually see the situation objectively en therefore she is unable to see who is actually causing this mess.

She said that it's probably all her fault and this is a very common excuse that victims of domestic violence use. As long as the pattern is repeating, she will never be able to break free of it.
And ask yourself honestly: Is that what you want too? To listen to her crying every time she's been abused again? Untill either you or he end the situation with a drastic form of violence? You know she won't be the one to end it.

Setting aside her role as victim for a moment here i'd like to point out something else. I truely hope you will understand what i'm saying as this is very much open to misinterpretation (just know that am not trying to devalue any of her pain or mental damage).
As long as she refuses to not act against that abusing scumbag of hers, all she can do is express her pain and fear with the ones she loves. On top of that she is very clear about not wanting anyone or anything to try to change the situation.
So while she is expressing her pain and in effect burdening you with it aswell, she won't allow for you to do anything about it. Effectively, this is a form of abuse aswell. In fact, she is abusing you, every times she cries on your shoulder or is showing you her brouses and not allowing you a way to stop being hurt.
And this is where you have the right and duty to act.

It is my very strong opinion that there will only be change in the situation when she herself can see and realise that physical abuse is not acceptable or a valid response to anything she might have done. I already repeated that she herself in powerless to change this situation. You and all her other loved ones need to make this happen for her. You need to take her life in your hands and take control for a while, as long as she needs to adjust to a normal situation and be able to see the ABnormality of her spouse's behaviour.
In effect, you need to go there and pack some suitcases and bring her along. You need to show her love, work on her self-worth and try to give a life that is as normal as possible. She needs to be able to review her life without the dominant role of her current partner and decide what her role has been in all this.
Meanwhile, the abuser will have to be kept at a distance. If it is possible to reason with him, explain your actions clearly. There is however no point in debating it with him because he won't be mentally able to see it your way.

Only then will she be truely able to see the situation objectively and make her decisions accordingly.

Whatever you do, good luck!

From the makers of 'a case of the crabs'.

go play or download it

EDIT: After playing through it and not having laughed even once, i'm not all that sure about it anymore. Sure there is humour in there, but just not my kind of humour.

This game is nothing like 'A case of the crabs', and IMHO far inferour to it. Two things that annoyed me the most:
- There is none-skippable spoken dialogue.
- The phrase 'That doesn't work' is used too many times.

Still, nice amusement for an hour or two, but nowhere near as good as crabs.

I notice you're using a lot of black and white.
Almost to the extent where you're using it as a resort to 'up' the image.

Granted, turning a photograph to b&w adds a LOT of atmosphere to an otherwise dull or maybe over-crowded picture. It can be a good way to bring out a good composition or lighting contrasts if the colors themself are too distracting from what you're trying to photograph. I think this one is a good example of where you applied it well.

But it would be a lot more challenging to try to go for a good picture without having to resort to b&w.

Don't get me wrong, most of the pictures are quite nice, some even beautiful. But being a good photographer is also about working with colors, how they complement eachother and thinking 'out of the box' to get that great angle or stunning light effect.

Good luck!

It's always helpful if you try to give as much information about an error as possible. Please DO try to reproduce the error.

Try to notice exactly what it is you're doing. Entering or leaving a room, walking inside a room (if so, wether you were walking towards an object or hotspot or whatever it was).

When you know exactly which action you were taking, look at what script may be running and check those for errors. Commenting out your own code and see if the problem persists.

When do you still don't find an error or can't find the solution to a problem you did find, post the error message (like you did) along with the code that runs at that specific action.

Good luck!

I haven't watched those dreaded awards myself, so please correct me if i'm horribly mistaken.
It sounds to me like there is a nicely oiled money-making-machine at work here..

Why not let the original artist perform his song:
1. None of the (american) viewers care, they want to see people they know and love. Strange is scary
2. The 'management' probably decided the original artist wasn't confident in such a 'high profile' gig and thus wasn't found competent to do a flawless performance.
3. Making viewers listen to a song performed by an artist they don't know and in a language they don't understand is bound to make it a zap-away moment.

Dragonrose, although you are somewhat correct in your statement about the Academies being about forms of film art, i find it painfully obvious that this original intention of the awards has been overshadowed by commerce. Not allowing the original artist to perform, to me, is just one of many examples that confirm this.

I was going to add that Carlos Sanatana's brilliance is only surpassed by his ego, but unintentionally my reply has become somewhat bitter, so i'll leave it behind.

Oh wait, i still said it.. damn!

Kairus, congratulations with the Academy award. I'm glad you have found something to be proud of. But if it were me i'd be much happier with a little credit on a Simpons episode :)
