Hm. My browser won't let me see them... for some reason they open directly in Paint Shop Pro for me (I did a "quote" then copied and pasted the links...). Weird.

But it seems to me that the uploading site thing doesn't support .pcx files. Try .gif or .png in the future instead.

They look real nice, though.

As far as adding detail does, to ME, the major spot that lacks discernable detail is her hair. Adding some dark(er) outlines might help define its shape and texture a bit better.

And the shading on her pants is odd to me... unless they're supposed to be a sort of blue latex/ pvc/ vinyl/ pleather kind of thing, in which case they totally rock 'nads.

For detail in her top (her bust area especially), you could add some sort of highlight again, to help define their shape a little better, I guess.

I was wondering if it would be possible to script a looping, non-blocking viewport change.

I was thinking it would be useful to simulate the bobbing motion of a ship floating on wavey water (if you were on its deck, for example).

Shading really helps, especially with reflective surfaces like metal. To make it look more metallic, add some shaded (darker) parts and some brighter highlights, keeping in mind where you're wanting the light source to be coming from.

Here's a very quickly/ cheaply done (and unfinished) paintover I did to illustrate what I mean:

Keep in mind that  it looks crappy due to the .jpg you posted (they compress information, so that's why they look all pixelly...) as well as the fact that I din't exactly know what shapes things were suppoed to be (in 3D) and didn't know what all of the different parts were supposed to be (especially in the head area, which is a little confusing...).

If you're doing reflective surfaces like this on sprites, though, it's a good idea to consider the colour of the light souce and/ or the dominant colour of the room when doing reflections (or they may look odd and out of place).

Well, it's pretty nice so far, but:

-The brick walkway just doesn't look right. Try having the bricks look more like they're in perspective (i.e., make their sides less straight, EDIT: and make the ones at the back smaller so they look further away). You may also want to consider using unevenly shaped stones for the walkway instead of rectangular bricks -- it'd probably help the "spooky" look a bit to have more "organic" shapes and all (instead of stiff-looking, boring bricks... but maybe that's just me).
-Though the idea of the door is nice, it looks odd.  The knob, especially, should probably be lower.
-As compared to the door, those torch things seem awfully big.

Also, if those are cattails growing here and there, consider that they usually grow in fairly damp environments, like marshes, swamps, bogs, lakes and such (as far as I know, anyway). Those trees look a bit bog-like, so that may be what you're going for anyway.

PS- Are you drawing on FAX sheets?...  :=

EDIT: Though not necessary by any means, in the future you might find it easier to transfer your scanned sketches into coloured backgrounds if you use mostly line art for your drawings (i.e., don't shade things)... especially if you're not colouring it using layers.

EDIT: And might I add that if you can make this into a nice, workable background, that you've made tremendous artistic strides since the room you posted for the first post in this topic. And that wasn't even a month ago. Keep up the good work.  :=

(gosh I like the new Larry Vales smiley...)

EDIT: Figured I'd give a go at colouring that background that you'd posted up there...

Added a wood floor for texture. Thought the rug (if that's what it is) looked sort of regal with those colours. And I made the doorways that murky purple just to fill space, since I have no idea what's beyond them.

By the way, what was up with the discoloured pixels in that picture (yours)? Like the cyan ones on the left on the left door, along the top of the running board/ moulding, for example. Just curious.

Thanks!

Well, here's a couple new versions of the side view. I really don't know which I like best, though....

Let me know what you think about these, as well as c&c about the front view posted above (and how I might go about adding hind legs to it).

A what?

I drew up the following sprite of a dog character:

I like it okay enough (it's supposed to be cartoony), but I'm wondering if anyone had any suggestions for drawing its hind legs (in the front view). I've tried drawing them in for a while now, without luck (at best they never look right... at worst, they look like massive testicles).

I'm also not terribly pleased with how his tail looks.

That aside, comments and criticism are welcome. Note though, that the general 2 pixel width outline is intentional, as it fits with everything else I've been doing for the game so far.

EDIT: Also, here's the side view. Critique it too if you like:

EDIT: Also note that the drawings are based on this picture:

SpacePirateCaine, too.

You may want to get rid of the dark outline for the top of her boobs.

And I personally like the black outline better, but I happen to be very partial to black outlines... On a smaller sprite, though, it may get to be a bit too much. You might want to consider using dark (yes, darker than what you have there) coloured outlines instead.

KILLER TOMATO!

Tomatoes are fruit! Right? Right!  :P

NOTE: Shamefully, I've never seen any of the Killer Tomato movies.
#271
Or possibly Bucky.

I like everything about this except for the Benji name. It reminds me too much of that scraggly dog that went by the same name.

Everything else I like, though. Could be very interesting.

Hm. Didn't much like "The Village". Liked one part around the middle

Spoiler
where the guy was stabbed and the lead switched off to the bling irl
[close]

but the rest was pretty blah. Could have been a lot better if some of the scenes were developped more,

Spoiler
like the boys standing with their backs to the woods
[close]

instad of doing things like showing shots of water. And trees. And grass. For WAY too long.

The "twists" in the ending were pretty lacking, IMO, though I did sort of like the idea of

Spoiler
the village being in a wildlife preserve.
[close]

Not a movie I'd reccomend, though. I dare say it's the kind of thing that a lot of people wouldn't appreciate very much at all.

Hi. Before I start delving into this too far, I was wondering if anyone could help me out.

I'm going to to a background with multiple frames of animation (beyond the 4 frames that are curreently allowed, at least as far as I know), and I'm wondering the best, most efficient/ effective way to do it (i.e., preferrably without massive slowdown).

What I'm going for it a sort of "psychedelic effects" lightshow, with blobs of colour slowly changing shapes and positions.

In thinking about it, I've come up with possible solutions.

1) Making a flat background and making the floating colour blobs into characters that move around with the help of the character control plugin (I think that's what it's called...) and have the colour/shape changes as animation frames.

2) Rawdrawing a bunch of moving objects on a flat-coloured background, maybe changing them colour with some sort of palette cycles.

The first option could work, maybe, but I don't have much experience with that plugin or know how much it slows things down (or doesn't). If it's not a viable option, what about the rawdraw? Is that at all realistic?...

(If it helps any, there probably wouldn't be much else animating on the screen while the psychadelic room would be in action. Probably one shortish animation at a time, tops.)

Again, any tips or advice you might have to push me in the right direction on this one would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Just curious, but is that "yes you CAN have too many Aliens/ Predator toys" or "yes, that's right: you CAN'T have too many Aliens/ Predator toys"? 'Cause I'm not seeinga Queen there.  ::)

A bit off topic and back to the Freddy vs. Jason thing --

I'm a big fan too (when we went to a marathon to see all the Friday the 13th movies back-to-back, my friedns and I actually all stood up and clapped at the 100th on-screen death, and we did something similar at the Nightmare movies), but I just really didn't like Freddy vs. Jason. I guess I had this vision in my mind of how awsome it should have been or something. Reason I didn't like it:

-Thought Jason looked craptastic. One of his worst incarnations ever, IMO.
-Not enough fighting between Jason and Freddy. Wasn't that what peple actually wanted to see?!?!!
-Freddy not attacking Jason's dreams enough or manipulating him to kill others enough.
-Freddy just didn't have NEARLY as many or as good of funny lines in this one as compared to the Nightmare series, where it was a real staple to the series.
-Not enogh of Jason chasing people, a staple of the Friday the 13th series.
-Not enough cool, creative death scenes, something both sereis were great for.

There's other things, too, but those are the big ones.  I guess it comes down to me just not having as much fun watching it as I did with pretty much all of the other movies that came before it. Heck, I even appreciated Jason X more than I did Freddy vs. Jason.

Back to Aliens vs. Predator, though, I have a feeling that they'll be making a lot of those same mistakes in not keeping intact some of the crucial elements that made those movies great. A PG13 rating ALONE stinks of "but we want kids to be able to see this too... so we can get more money!!!". Of course, maybe then there's a better chance of more action figures, too. And we can never have enough Aliens and Predator action figures, can we?

Well, the biggestthing I'm seeing is that things aren't the same size from the side view to the front. If you're able to use layers, make a new layer that will be discarded later, so that you can make horizontal lines under and over key body and object parts that extend from the original sprite to the new one.

Just by eyeballing it though, I can see that the new sprite:

-needs a longer nose (maybe most important, as the nose seems to be one of the most distinguishing features of the side view... at least for me)
-should have her handbag crossing ABOVE where he boobs out to be
-you maybe should see her hair in the gaps beteween he body and her arm
-the handbagg itself needs to be bigger
-should be a bit shorter (even with the feet taken into consideration)
-eyes should be a pixel taller
-shading under the breasts would help
-And, of course, the hands need to be worked on, and shoes need to be added.  :P

Also, insofar as the hair accessory (I can't remember what you call these types of ones... any help?...), I still don't like it (in either view, but less so in the side view). I'm thinking that it should extend downward less, as it'd get covered more by her hair or just stop. Considering that these things (the ones that I've seen) don't ususally sit on the head and extend lower than the ears, it looks funny to me, becauuse it's going well below her earline (remember that the tops of where the ears connect  to the hear are about even with eye level).

Keep up the good work, though. I'm impressed bythe stried you're making and the effort you're making to follow advice given. Good stuff!

I think Jack may have meant that the front view looks like he's dancing.... but I think that motion will change that, too...

I too have a bad feeling about tis one. However, like Darth, my expectations are so low, I may just be pleasantly surprised. I went into Anderson's "Resident Evil" with the same mindset, and walked away feeling okay about the movie (yes, it was crap, but I didn't want to whack myself across the wang with a rusty frying pan afterwards either, which is what I'd sort of expected to happen... [which begs the question of why I watched it in the first place....]).

They should have just stuck with the plotline from the original Dark Horse comic mini-series, as it was quite good and really, what started the whole idea in the first place (yes, it predated the alien queen skull seen in Predator 2... which I totally freaked out over, btw).

I hoping that it'll be great, though. Really, really hoping.
