cout << "...But I'd rather learn C++ first." << endl;

It's less painful learning C++ first and then C# / Java, than the other way around.

General Discussion / Re: Geocities

now that you mention it, I DO have some ancient stuff hidden somewhere on a couple of Geocities accounts, including old unfinished midis and FFVII savegames (that I never got to finish, but someday MAYBE I will). I wonder if it's worth the trouble backing up all that stuff if I haven't needed them for years.

Geocities used to make sense, but today I wonder why.

Since we're talking about programming, I suggest you try out the Consolas font, if you haven't already.

I tried a few programming fonts, and this is by far the best. Much cleaner than Courier/ Courier new, and has distinct characters for O, 0, I, l and 1.

This is not the main reason, but I believe one of the factors that ruin games today is the attempt to reach realism. Holy crap, my rifle can get old and so I have to change it! Oh noes, my character is hungry, I must go eat a hamburger unless I want to die! How is this making the game any more fun? Realism can be intriguing, but not when it comes between me and my fun and certainly NOT when it tries to be passed on as innovation. If I wanted realism I'd go rob a real bank, or go to war. And I actually miss things like avoiding big boulders infinitely swinging on a rope, even though I'd always think they were annoying.

For some inconceivable reason, this made me laugh out really loud: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=7393.msg489292#msg489292
It's my favourite recent post, and I don't even know why.

The only thing that can stop your hair from falling is the ground... A sad truth that all of us DNA-cursed men have to deal with.

Indieboy, that was the best reply ever :P

As for me, I managed to find and get rid of the virus after all. Thanks everyone for your help.

Zooty: That's a really strange problem you are having. What happens if you plug a "dead" cable in? If your touch pad still works, it's probably some weird short-circuit issue, the kind that happened to me when I spilled a drop of sprite on my keyboard.

In no particular order....

Theocracy - Mirror of Souls
Saviour Machine - Saviour Machine II
Veni Domine - Material Sanctuary
Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite
Symphony X - The Oddyssey
Sanctifica - Negative B
Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth
Opeth - Damnation
Gamma Ray - Powerplant
Gamma Ray - Land of the Free

There are more albums I like, some of which probably deserved to be in the list more than some of the above. But, these were the first ten I could think of.

Okay okay, I was hasty starting this thread before trying 100% everything, but I did try things around. System Restore takes a very long time to finish and I didn't want to waste time restarting/restoring/restarting every time I want to try something (I do have work to do too), so I asked if anyone knows a certain way around it.

Anyway, I'm sorry.

QuoteGet it working
Back everything up
Nuke windows
Reinstall all

That's your one, coherent answer.
That's too troubling. I bought a new computer, problem's fixed! Actually, I didn't, but I'll work this out when I have more time.

QuoteWhat happens if you try to start one of the apps?
Just nothing.

Now, let's turn this into a useful and productive thread, like complain about how much Windows sucks but you still use it anyway because some mysterious force wants you to.

Hey,

I am actually writing this with my mobile phone while I am waiting for System Restore to finish.

I have this weird problem: when I booted into windows a couple of days ago, the vast majority of my applications would simply refuse to run; not including -thank God - System Restore, which is one of the first things I tried and worked. Or did it really?

Next time I wanted to turn on my computer, I had the exact same problem. And again, System Restore did the trick. The only things I did both times was that I installed divx, vcl media player and vob sub, which I thought was ridiculous to actually be the real cause. So all is well, I used my computer to only do the usual simple things and made no changes. However, the problem still appeared for the next boot, and I am currently restoring again.

Does this sound familiar somehow? I did try scanning after the first restore, with no results. Then again, if it's a virus clever enough to disable half my applications (including my anti-virus) why didn't it disable system restore?

If you have any ideas, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I think that's the problem right there. In my experience, whenever you have to click on an advert to find out about something, it's most likely not worth clicking.

QuoteDear "My Sister's Brother":
Here, at the university where I teach, researchers have created an incredible device that is capable of magnifying objects 136,000,000%. This amazing device utilizes a series of concave crystal lenses to make incredibly small objects visible. Even objects as small as 1,000,000th the size of a speck of dust can be seen with it! However, even with the help of such a device, you would still not be able to see how very little I care about your problem.
     Sincerely,
Prof. Pizpoploop

This is the only response I read that I thought was funny :P

Heh, plane food is even worse than army food, and I tried both to compare. When I'm about to travel I always have something in the airport restaurants so that I won't have to depend on army plane food. Of course, when you have to travel for like 10 hours, it becomes a problem....

I need people with awesome spriting, modeling, programming and music skillz to help me with the awesome idea I had last night, an MMORPG made in AGS called World of Limbo of the Lost Online. As to what I'll be doing to contribute to the production, I'm excellent with the whip.

Who wants to help meeee?

I've had 2mbit for the last couple of weeks (was 1mbit before, but my ISP upgraded everyone for free), I have to pay double the prize for 4 mbit and that's expensive.

Well, our best ISP might be slow as hell compared to other countries, but least I no longer have to suffer from the dial-up demons ;D

Different materials have different heat transfer rate. Try, during day, to touch a stone and then on a piece of iron that were both laid out in broad sunlight, in the same place. Both materials have the same temperature, but iron can transfer heat to your hand at a much faster rate, therefore giving you the illusion that it's hotter.
