General Discussion / Re:Morals anyone?
Sun 11/05/2003 07:54:09
"Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again."

Electric chair - bad idea. :)

Even without the quote, I don't think anyone is less of a criminal if they commit the same acts for the sake of punishment. The people who committed the punishment would be equally bad. If not worse. Think about it, organized raping and torture?

But then again, we're pretty much running out of options. :P

Not that my point wouldn't still stand.

General Discussion / Re:Morals anyone?

I'm not even sure what this discussion SHOULD BE about. But I find it necessary to emphasize Sasha's point.

Every time someone mentions Bible, someone points out that Christians are full of crap. And that The Bible contradicts itself and thus is incredible. Concluding that Christianity is nothing but a tasteless joke.

It's logical, but in my opinion, the wrong conclusion. It's true that there are lots of contradictions, for the very reason Sasha pointed out. And it's true that almost all 'righteous' Christians you might know of, are hypocrites. Going to church on Sundays and so on. Nonetheless, I do not make the conclusion that Christianity is what these facts imply.

I think the essence of Christianity comes down to the gospel(s). I should point out that they're the only texts in the New Testament that supposedly contain God's message (told by Jesus). The others are written by people who didn't know more than we do, so to say. Anyway, I can't find anything in it that would contradict with itself. I also can't see anything negative about it. It only promotes things that are universally regarded good: don't kill, don't steal - in the simplest form. No matter what, living by the moral found in the gospel can only produce good, in my opinion. I don't think that can be disputed.

In my opinion, the whole issue pretty much comes down to this: "Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit."

OK. I'm done.

I've got to say that forest image kicks ass! Great colors, great values. Really, good work!

I agree - really, really good!

Did you take any influence from King's Quest VGA? If not, check it out. It's very close to your style, only a bit more polished.

I'm going to list a couple of things that in my opinion could be improved. Remember, it's just my opinion, and the things I point out might just be part of your style.

- The perspective is a bit off. It could be OK otherwise, but the trees on the foreground - especially the one on the right, don't fit the perspective. You could fix the problem by covering the upper part of the tree with leaves, I think.

- The main light source is a bit indefinite. It's obvious that the light is coming from the sky, but you could emphasize the fact by adding more shadows. In addition to regular, definite shadows, you could for example make the trees' trunks a bit darker from the upper part, as the leaves wouldn't let much light there. Shadows in general would tremendously add to the depth of the image.

- Too clean surfaces. For example the rock. There could be, in my opinion, lots of little cracks and perhaps a bit of grass on it. You could also break the rigid edges of the leaves on the trees to make it look more natural. Also, the tree trunks are a bit of an issue. I really love the texture on them, but you could add different colors to the trunk as well. It's really hard though, and if the color variation doesn't seem to fit in, you can leave it for later. It's just good to know if you ever think your forest is too 'clean'.

- Darker darks - lighter lights. So to say. Often when you add contrast to your image, the illusion of depth becomes a lot stronger. So, you could add highlights on the trunks for example, if there's a bonfire or something like that near the trunk. Or then just without a reason, like it's in many of King's Quest VGA's backgrounds. And on the other hand, you could add almost black to cracks that might be on tree trunks or perhaps on the rocks.

Here's an example of how the tree on the right could be 'improved':

Ah, thanks a lot!

The second one is actually just a small part of the original one (3 times bigger). In case someone wanted to see more detail. Hehe.

Hey, it's been a long time since I last needed criticism, or got any time for drawing/painting at all, for that matter. Anyway, I've been trying to work on RF's backgrounds as much as possible but it seems that I'm still not quite happy with the style. I'm now trying to get a bit more detail to the images with custom brushes. The image here is not quite the style I'm looking for actually, it's a bit too serious and still quite dull detail-wise, but anyway, I'd like you tell me what you like so far. Sorry about the image being so dark... I didn't realize it when I was drawing it in fullscreen. If you have the time, please check it out in fullscreen as well. The detail should be better seen then.

Thanks in advance for any input!

A link to the image!

"I know he created Rob Blanc. Why do you always assume Im making pointless threads?" - Are you serious?

Just kidding. I just want to point out that you should be more specific about your question if you want someone to give you the correct answer.

The question, "who is Yahtzee?", is pretty generic, don't you think? Also, a topic should summarize the content of your post. In this case, it obviously should be just another question mark. So, what I'm saying is, take the time to write your post. My posts usually take from 10 minutes to 60 minutes. You are what your posts are, I'm afraid.

That's great, Trapezoid! Reminds me very much of Monkey Island 1 and 2's style.

I personally don't think the light from the fireplace would reach the stones on the wall of the fireplace directly. There surely would be some bounced light, but it wouldn't create quite that bright edges on the stones. NONETHELESS, as Igor pointed out, it definitely works as it is! But for the arguments sake, I think MrMasse is right.

For anyone that gives this technique a try, I suggest close studying of the colors of the reference images while drawing over them. I think colors are the main reason why reference makes the image look that good. The secondary matters would probably be shapes - perspective, but that is easier to achieve without reference.

This is a good opportunity to gradually work without reference and still produce the same quality of backgrounds. Or if you still prefer working with reference, you can start adding extra stuff to the background, as it's really hard to find a picture with everything necessary on the right places.

El-Muerte, re-read the thread and thou shall find thy answereth.

I think the main issues were his ego and thus the very negative attitude. To me, he seemed hostile.

I never saw him help anyone. I could be wrong on this one though.

He was always going on about himself. He never encouraged anyone.

It's just that he was a negative person, and people just couldn't stand it. It's like going on a date with a person that only talks about him or herself.

He can make average games though. Even though I think the majority of people thinks he can make really good games. Perhaps they're just not my preference in style (not meaning art).

Hehe, as you pointed out, it's best just not to mention him. Not that he was a taboo or anything. It's just that the negative attitude comes with that name.

Funny, you've only posted one topic and it involves Yahtzee.

* Pessi makes conclusions.

Just kidding.

The word is subconsciousness, I think.

Yeah, it is subconsciousness that makes us dream what we dream. My conscious mind wouldn't be stupid enough to torture myself with those weird dreams.

It is possible for the conscious mind to be the boss though. You just need to realize you're dreaming. It is extremely hard though. This would be called lucid dreaming. Heh, I always direct the discussion to this. Anyway, I'm pretty sure almost everyone has had one of those 'hey, I'm dreaming' experiences. Even though lucid dreaming isn't that exactly, but anyway...
#253
Sounds pretty profound and logical for a dream, Esseb. Not that dreams weren't that, but they're often so ambiguous I really can't be sure.

Mods, I think that's the first one actually. I think you just represent the standard AGS'er, nothing personal.

I had an AGS related dream just a couple of nights ago. I can't really remember the plot, but I remember being with people that I knew by name. Well, actually, I knew everyone by their looks as well, but no one looked the same as in pictures. I can only remember Mods trying to tell me something (in Finnish)... I think he had his name floating above his head. I'm too used to talking with nicknames, obviously.

The fact that everyone talked in Finnish that dream reminds me of the fact that I've started having dreams in English as well. I sometimes even think in English.

On semi-related matter, also a couple of nights ago, I had a dream where I had a some kind of a houseparty. It wasn't the house I'm currently living in, but I knew it was mine. Anyway, I came back to my room from somewhere, probably partying in other rooms or something and noticed that all my furniture was broken. I took a look at the computer and all my project files were deleted. I was really shocked. I was SO relieved it wasn't true. I can still feel the hostility that I felt in that dream.

Funny though, I never thought some files were that important to me.

Anywya, this got me thinking, why do brains produce such dreams? I thought sleeping was the time to relax, why does brain do this to itself? Perhaps I'm just preparing myself in case it would happen. I've got to backup all my files tomorrow.

In short, nope. Didn't have that kind of a dream. I've heard it's possible to share a dream though. Well, I hear lots of things. That was in a book about dreams though. Well, I read lots of things.
