Critics' Lounge / Re:Deluxe Paint in 16-bit

You mean when you import the sprites in the game the colors get messed up?

If so, you just have to make sure the game is actually in hi-color mode. Even if you import 256 color images they should show up fine if the game is in hi-color.

But to answer your question, you can't make 16-bit images in Deluxe Paint, to my knowledge.

Catch 22 - Keasbey Nights. I also just checked Just Jack - Snowflakes video off the website and it rocks.

Haddas, that's interesting at least. :) I first thought you were talking about Diablo but then again I think it's all Finnish.

Good luck, Jekyll! I'm counting on you.

I'm also looking for a job. Just decided today that I'll go and ask if anyone has anything I could do. Basically I'm just tired of doing nothing. Weird, isn't it? :)

John Donlan, I completely agree on the fact that it's really hard to find a job you really like. And it's hard to think you could find one you will like for the rest of your life. I suppose I should just stop thinking about it like that.

Again, good luck!

And the winner iis, Plasticman! Congratulations! I'm looking forward to the next Blitz.

:) :) :)

OK, I think it would be reasonable to have the voting time end in, say, 9 hours. That's pretty much 9PM (GMT +02:00) for me so I could wrap this up. I'm completely confused by all the time zones so I'm not sure if it is reasonable. Let me know if it isn't.

And my vote goes to... Plasticman! The image is totally sweet. Here's why:

Darth Mandarb's image definitely works. However, the thing why it doesn't work the BEST for this Blitz is that the style could be more serious. The style is great though, as already pointed out, but Plasticman was closer to the serious detectivegame look I was after. The best part of Darth's image were the characteristic characters :) and the perspective.

Minimi's piece has a great potential, it's a shame it isn't finished or near finished. That's why I can't really compare it to the others.

Dorcan did great on lighting. The most advanced lighting of the entries, in my opinion. I like the different hues and the bouncing light. The reason why I prefer Plasticman's entry to this is again because of the style. His style would work better for a serious game in my opinion. So it's not about skill really, just the style. But different styles are all good, if everyone had the same styles it would be boring.

Just one thing I would like to see in Plasticman's image would be something to make the shadows a bit more appealing. Like different hues or some shapes there. But anyway, you can't use very much time on Background Blitz so it's something that could be just because of lack of time. I don't know, it's just something I'd like to see.

All in all, this was a very pleasant surprise for me to see so many high-standard entries. Thanks again! Vote people!

Dorcan, that is amazing!!! It doesn't really bother me that it isn't that polished since the major stuff is pretty much right there. And "pretty much" just because you say they could be better. :)

Very Igorish, in a good way.

Plasticman, sure. Can you give a rough estimation when it'll be finished?

I really like what I've seen so far! Thanks everyone.

Dorcan, yeah. Great to hear you're still interested. :)

Minimi, looks really nice. The trees really add to the atmosphere with their shapes. Even though you didn't get to use any colour the atmosphere is obvious. Good work. Thanks for showing it!

Just a reminder - one day to go! Give it a try, guys.  :)

I agree with DGMacphee. I think you need to give more reasons to your arguments, Minimi. It's also a good idea to show respect for other people's opinions on the issue. And this probably goes to all of us.

That's a good one, YakSpit/John Shirley/Jean Fong! ;D

I think that's a great idea, MillsJROSS! However, I think it might work better as an actual tutorial, rather than the demo game. Perhaps there could be several tutorials such as this, concentrating on different issues. Tutorial Quest.

As for the original (I think) topic, the default sprites. As many of you have pointed out, it doesn't really make your game any better or worse, no matter how they look cause they'll be replaced anyway. Nonetheless, I think it would give the user a more realistic image of AGS' performance. Despite the fact that if the user is serious about making a game, they'll figure it out eventually.

Looking real good! Very interesting style Darth, especially the perspective. Seems really animation friendly. I like the tension created with the characters.

Minimi, yes you can. It can be a kind of a screenshot, like Darth's one. As long as the characters could work as actual sprites.

Grayscale holds great potential. Hopefully you'll be able to make it.

Rock on, everybody! I didn't expect such interest. :)
#73
Alright! ;D

Thanks for bringing that up, I all forgot about it! The size 320x240, colors 256. I hope this doesn't limit anyone's style very bad.

Good luck!

Hopefully this background blitz gets more attention than the previous one. :) This one will end on Saturday so the next one can start on Monday or something like that. I hope it's OK.

The subject for this Background Blitz will be "meeting at a warehouse". The style should be something that would fit a rather serious detective adventure game. There will be a meeting with some criminals/gangsters at some warehouse at nighttime. The atmosphere is supposed to be exciting/scary. Pay attention to lighting.

I think so, Erwin. Even if it would be able to transform/animate the bitmap, I doubt the edges would stay very clean. But that's coming from someone who used the program a couple of years ago or something. :)

YakSpit, I was thinking about the same thing. What if there's someone else out there who could do a better job? How about a competition or something? I'd be willing to give it a shot!

I was wondering, would it be good to upgrade the default graphics? I mean, the way I see it, the current graphics kind of reflect more DOS Roomedit. Naturally, you can and will replace the default graphics but I personally would find it nicer to work with graphically more advanced sprites. They just don't seem to make the right impression of what AGS is capable of.

Is it just me?

Hey, just wanted to say that lately I've been enjoying Darth's help/images quite a bit!

Surprisingly enough, I know what you're talking about as well.

In army my roommate was browsing through his new umm... anatomy reference photos and he basically jumped up and shouted "I know this girl!" He said she was one of his sisters friends or something like that.

I told him to ask his sister to check it out but he didn't. :)

Here's a good method for getting the character's proportions correct with perspective. I don't know if you've seen it before but I tried it on the image and the fist is something like 2/3 of the 'realistic' size. Or something. That's what I think anyway. Check it out! The diagonal lines method especially.

I think there's something about the color theme that kind of disturbs me. It's just hard to concentrate on one thing on the image. Despite the fact that the sky and the shorelines point at the character. I don't know if it's actually the detail throughout the image or something. Sorry, not being that helpful. :)

Overall, great work!
