And IIRC, interacting with objects was achieved by clicking on the closeup in the lower right, not by double-clicking things.

You can interact by double-clicking things in the original Loom.

Both zip and rar are corrupted, I suggest you switch to better hosting.

Whee, piratey songs. \o/ Every one of the entries gave me heebie jeebies and really got me to piratey mood, arrr!

ProgZmax: A cracktro tune, awesome. The melody is straight out of Nightwish's song (well, probably not, but it could be!) and I like it very much. Very nice track, good jobba!

Geoffkhan: This track is like sex, only better. I even figured out how to groove to it! I dig the instruments and the overall feeling of the tune, awosomo work!

Blodvarg: Just great. Very moody, great choice of instruments and overall very well composed tune. Especially the strings towards the end of the tune send chills down my spine. Keep it up!

EldKatt: EldKatt actually finished his entry in time. :o The tune really captures the feeling of the setting even though it doesn't sound very piratey. But it could be used in governor's mansion as a background tune! Keep entering these compos, Kattypops!

He-Man: Great. Very Monkey Islandish, and the style of your tunes tells what kind of music you possibly listen to. The solo part towards the end of the tune was a nice touch, but the main melody was pure sex! Next make a pirate game!

Btw. how do you guys come up with those pirate melodies?

Okay, so the winner is...

umm, let me think for a while.

...

He-Man! With Blodvarg coming very close second. It wasn't easy to judge this compo, you know!

Great work! Thanks to everyone who entered, the overall quality of this compo was amazing, possibly one of the highest ever in Tune Contest's history. I want everyone to keep entering the future compos and I'll do my best to do it so myself, too.

I think Pete's appraisal of the '03 period is apt, i.e. The Era of Games that Never Were, though the same could be said going up to the present (Dan Clarke, Bernie, Petteri, I'm looking at you!Ã,  ;D).Ã,

Funny that you should mention that, I was actually about to add Goldlagoon to the list of games that have gone Run Hot... :P

The Era of Games That Never Were (~2003)

The amount of new members kept growing while AGS got more and more powerful tool. This led into people starting ambiguous projects that simply were way too much for them to handle. Many new projects were started, but not many of them got finished because either people realized it probably wouldn't be a good game after all or the the project was simply way too big. Games like The Legend of Leitor's Edge, Revenants, The Cloak, The Case etc. were highly anticipated, but eventually the development just halted. Which is a shame, really.

Community: General General made people to post lots of pointless post, but the some of the good debates proved some new members to be great debaters, like Farlander and Barcik. Some of the oldies simply vanished, but many new members turned out to be great game developers. Andail hosted Mittens in Sweden. I think it was some time in 2003 when Games in Production -forum was created, too.

Many hilarious personalities made their appearances too. RPGcreator was making the best RPG ever, made the fastest song ever and told how great person (s)he is. frenchy_117 wanted to make the possibly most ambiguous AGS game ever, The Road Through Life.

Noted games: The Uncertainty Machine, Keptosh I: The Search for Junc, RoN: Apocalypse Meow, Apprentice, 5 Days a Stranger, to mention a few.

If anyone remembers something I failed to mention/isn't correct, please do add/correct.

The background feels and is very empty. I'm not sure if all the doors will be interactive objects but if you at least have one that's not, then add it. How come there are no sign or windows and stuff like that. And the alley should have trashcans and litter.

Quote from: Moox on Sun 22/01/2006 15:04:39
Unfinished bg it will go on.

As for the art...

I'm going mad if I look at those tyres any longer, so I had to do this! (look closely what I did with the tyres, removed some silly pixels)

As Vince said, if you're going to use the car on the background as it is now, it will look like a cardboard cutout. Make a compromise, lower the vanishing point in the background and make make the car look more like a three dimensional object.

Ah, okay. No worries. I just suddenly remembered liking the demo back when it came out and thought if it was still up somewhere.
#308
Does anyone happen to have the demo of Sibylla: The Mourning Land? The AGS games archive doesn't have it, it's not added to the games page, the GiP-thread doesn't exist anymore and the link on the creator's website doesn't work anymore.

General Discussion / Re: StoryGen

Story number 3:

Hello, world! Hello! How may I help you, World asked and
smiled. he had a sense of Deja Vu which is cool of course!
and nice But something was missing, so he put on his
shades. Feeling the coolness running all over his veins he
took a step forward and said: And he turned into 007! big
round bulbous melons. "I'd buy that for a dollar!" said the
strang looking main wearing thick glasses, a yellow raincoat
and rubber boots. SO THERE. Then a pretty lady walked by,
and the man opened wide his raincoat to reveal And
proceeded to buy it. World smirked, then took a melon and
gave it to the strange looking man. the dog is brown And of
course, that was stupid. The lady grabbed the big round
bulbous melon and shoved it up Meanwhile, back in the
batcave... said Haddas. Little kid that was playing with
his football looked at Haddas with shocked look on his face
and ran away. stairs chairs and pears "Oh, you mean those
star-shaped fruits? Yeah, we have them." World said.
"balls! I like balls!" exclaimed the strange man. "I like
big'uns, round ones, soft ones, hard ones. Ooohhh... I want
to play with some balls!" "Bawls? Sorry, we don't sell
drinks." World said. And of course, he was upset. So his
head was severed from his torso, and given to the poor for
food

It seems to be getting better!

Dam thing is, that the games I used to love back then, I'd hate now. I remember putting on a certain game and the magic memories I had of that game were destroyed in seconds. (I used to like this bag of crap? I remember thinking this game had great graphics and gameplay!) Believe me I wish I could still like them today.

How very strange, because that has never happened to me yet I have heard several people saying that. Of course it's only a good thing, because I can enjoy all the games I enjoyed in my childhood nowadays as much as I enjoyed them back then.

Btw. you're missing the awesome that is http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=22171.0

perhaps Wednesday (16th-23rd)? Mid-week is usually cheaper anyways.

I told this to Farlander and he said he would call the campsite soon ask about the prices. Personally, I would prefer mid-August over the last week of August, and I hear other people prefer that too.

We need info!!

Theme of the week: Pirates!

Imagine you agreed to make a soundtrack for someone's game. Turns out the someone was making a game about pirates, set in the 17th century, so basically what he wants is a piratey soundtrack.

Your task is to make either:
- main theme for the game.
- caribbeanish background tune.

For inspiration/examples, you could listen to the Monkey Island soundtrack, especially the music in CMI and EMI is what I'm after. You can listen to it here. Another tune I absolutely love can be found in Apprentice 2 when you go to the docks.

So basically what I'm looking for is the feel of the tune. I want it to feel piratey/caribbeanish, but also keep in mind that the game takes place in the 17th century. But if YOU feel this electric guitar or slap bass suits the tune very well, go for it! The main point of this compo is to have fun and improve your skills.

Post the link to your entry here, the entry must be mp3, ogg, midi, sid or module (ie. xm, it, mod etc.)

Have fun! I'm looking forward to your entries!
#313
Whoo, thanks! The overall quality of this compo was very good, nice job everyone. I have a couple of ideas in my mind, I'll start a new compo shortly.
#314
I vote for myself in every category. Oh but I didn't enter lol

*ahem* Hmm.

Best Idea - Darth Mandarb.
Good idea, it stands out from amongst all the entries, which is good. I don't like the gradients though, other than the sky.

Best Design - Darth Mandarb.
Nice scene, nice design.

Best Functionality - cpage.
I can actually imagine the background in a game. Just looking at the background gives a lot of ideas what could be done in the room if it was actually used in game.

Best Technique - cpage.
Darth and cpage have quite similar styles, but I prefer cpage's background more. As mentioned earlier, I don't like the usage of gradients and what seems like usage blur tool in Darth's background. The lighting in cpage's background is very moody, but I think it could be even more moody if the lighting was stronger.

I think the point is to make the whole game in a week, including the planning (that's part of game developing). And as scotch said

Quote from: scotch on Tue 10/01/2006 16:04:49
Also, since I have announced this quite far in advance I am going to have to impose some restrictions on the content of the game to be released when it starts... nothing too restrictive, just enough that I can be sure you didn't start early :)
#316
Get a music making program and start experimenting. That's what I did years ago, I have never studied any music theory. I see you know how to play guitar and how to use some of the programs, that's a good start.
#317
It's quite amazing how threads about Yahtzee's games always become flamewars.

As for the game itself, I really liked it and am eagerly waiting for the second part. Oh yes.
