General Discussion / Re: King Kong
Fri 06/01/2006 22:28:10
Woah I'm late.

Hello, I just saw the movie. I can't really say if it was good or not, so I'm just going to say it was okay. The plot was very detailed, I liked that. I also liked how some of the backdrops (like the snowy park in New York or the valley where Kong beat Rex) looked like they were actually made in the 30s. They didn't look real, but they looked... magical? I don't know if that was intentional or not, but I liked it. The movie also made me feel like something I haven't felt in years when watching a movie. When Kong kidnapped Ann and ran through the jungle. The shaky camera and stuff made it look painful and nightmarish, something I would never want to feel. I haven't felt like that since I watched a creepy UFO movie when I was a kid. Another parts that made me feel strange were when
- Ann was inside the hollow log and those creepy bugs started approaching her.
- When some of the crew members fell to the bottom of the canyon and all those giant bugs and worms appeared.

I seriously wanted to look away. It was like a nightmare and I wanted to wake up, but I couldn't. I wanted to close my eyes, but that would have been silly. It was icky! I hate that kind of critters. There were some kids watching the movie too, I just wonder how much they got freaked out when those worms ate... Herb? Or whatever was the name of the cook.

The characters were well made in my opinion. I didn't like Carl at all, Jack Black was an excellent choice to play him. Carl was so big asshole, shame he didn't die in the end.

Jack was your average hero, but also very good character. I wanted Ann to escape Kong, but she fell in love with him! What a fool! Though the final scene with them on the roof of Empire State building was very nice.

I didn't quite get Baxter. He wanted to save his own ass everytime, and all of a sudden he wanted to save the crew from the bug ridden canyon! And in the end he suddenly wanted to save his own ass again when it looked that Kong was very pissed off. Baxter was a nice character though, snobbyish and exactly like some selfish actor star would probably be.

As for the minor characters, I liked Jimmy, but I don't quite get why he changed so much during the movie. I mean, at first he was like some small thief, a no good youngster, then suddenly he was all heroish and stuff. Hayes was probably my favourite character though. He was like Jimmy's father or big brother, and the wisest man of the whole crew. Since from the beginning I was hoping he would survive all the way to the end, but somewhere in my mind I knew he was going to die. I swear if the actor would have been white, Hayes wouldn't have died.

Overall, not bad movie. I really liked the idea to have dinosaurs, though I don't think it's fair to compare the first movie with this new one because so much has changed in the movie industry during the years. Go figure.

I had an idea for 'Mittens Murder Mystery 2005' and I even vaguely mentioned it at Mittens. Basically, it was going to be set to Agia-Anna and was going to be a murder mystery... with a twist! I even scripted a fully working interface but I dropped the project when I decided to finish CW.

Personally, I have enjoyed the many games that featured AGSers and I would like to see more. But it's very important to get the characters to be recognizable in the game.

Actually, I find the overall grayness in your background dull, while InCreator's lighting and colouring makes it seem very atmospheric and exciting. The first thing to come in to my mind when looking at InC's paintover is "Woah, nice futuristic room in a space ship or something!". The amount of detail is very nice, but I don't quite understand why the second cyan panel has dithered shading while rest of the background doesn't have any dithering.

The army:
Pelimies by Martti Vainaa & Sallitut Aineet. (oh, whoops. This ISN'T one of my favourite songs anymore, because it was played in radio ALL THE TIME. I did like it though when it was fresh, before they began playing it in radio.)
B.Y.O.B. by System of a Down.

I hear those two songs many times in the army.

Mittens:
This one (anyone recognize it yet?). :P
Could you be loved? by Bob Marley.

The only songs I recognize that were played at the campsite. Oh, Bad Boys too.

Other stuff:
Every song by The Advantage. Most listened band of 2005 for me, I guess.
Cutsman by HORSE the Band. Another band I discovered in 2005, and I fell in love with this song.
Pumpkin Pie, Word Disassociation, Lawnmower, Ebaum's World dot Com, The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny by Lemon Demon. My favourite Lemon Demon songs of 2005. So many good memories.
Julie & Candy by Boards of Canada. This song was once featured in an AGS game (or rather the demo of it). One of the songs that I listened to a lot during the summer.
Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head by Gorillaz.
2015: Cascades of Sound and Light splintering the shadows of your waking conciousness (v8) by Wrexsoul. Hehe, weird story behind this one. I was in the bus, on the way to Mittens. I fell asleep and woke up later, with this song playing on my mp3-player. It was raining outside, too. It was quite a strange feeling, I don't know why though. o_O Actually, many of the songs mentioned were in my mp3-player and I listened to them in the bus.

Christmas:
Wizards in Winter, Anno Domine by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Linus and Lucy by A Vince Guaraldi Trio.

Songs I listened to a lot during the Christmas time.

Ultimate Showdown for teh win.

When Robots Attack is definately not the best song from Damn Skippy! but the video is excellent. I would love to see videos made for Pumpkin Pie and Subtle Oddities, too.

I quite like that idea, Jet, but I would keep the best sound -category as it was before. Sounds effects are a great way to create atmosphere and I think the game with best sound effects should be judged by the way the sound effects are used and how well they work to create atmosphere.

Did you actually run the game and see how the background looked in the actual game? Because backgrounds tend to lose some colours when displayed in the editor.

i remember last year like yesterday lol

Resolutions:
- Finish at least one game.
- Attend AGS meetings. \o/
- Do stuff.

My friend almost hit an old man with a firework by accident (the firework didn't work properly and started flying towards him), the old man got pissed and asked for our names (What was he thinking? That we are some 8-year-old kids?) and started threatening us.

Happa nu-yar!

Idea: mordalles (reminds me of Discworld yay)
Everything else: Neil Dnuma (very clear, working background, nice style and overall very good job)

Lovely colours in Big Brother's background, though.

There should be a folder called "Music", put the files in there and re-compile your game.

Some of my friends have seen it and said it was quite LotR-ish. I have yet to see it, but I'm planning to go out to see it during the next few days. I haven't even read the book.

The Rumpus Room / Re: Happy Birthday Thread!

Thanks guys. No, I won't answer any questions regarding my birthday being on Christmas Eve. :P

Yay people like it \o/

Heh, it would have been interesting if we played all the instruments by ourselves while living in different countries. As Vel said, the songs were composed on the computer, so it wasn't really that big hassle to work on the album over the internet. Just making a midi, tossing it back and forth for a moment and then digitalising it. It's more of a collection of music we have made during the past couple of years, with some completely new tracks in the mix, arranged carefully into a nice playlist rather than an album some band would make. Or something.

Maybe it's just the reputation of the author.
