General Discussion / Re: Smoking ban UK
Tue 03/07/2007 23:54:50
We've had the ban for a short while in Finland. I don't smoke myself, but I don't mind people smoking around me, I'm used to cigarette smoke. I do like the fact that my clothes and hair don't smell of smoke anymore after a night out (but then again, it wouldn't matter much NOW because I got a washing machine recently). My favourite bar has had a small, separate room for smokers since the place was opened, and it has worked fine, I have never heard anyone complaining about it. Going there for the first time was definitely weird though, I had never been to a smokeless bar before. It took me a while to figure out what was missing.

There has been discussion about bars starting to smell of sweat, piss and crap after the ban, but I haven't noticed it myself. Perhaps I go to too fancy places?

Also, the day m0ds stops smoking is the day Hell freezes over! ;)

The Rumpus Room / Re: Happy Birthday Thread!

I doubt he reads this, but I would still like to say happy birthday to Shattered Sponge! Have a good one, wherever you are!

Seems like you had excellent time and I'm sorry I couldn't be THERE (internet magic isn't quite as good as actually being there!) Time to start saving every extra penny from now on, I'd be mad to spend another summer without attending any AGS meets!

Pablo is still asleep (he has slept for like 12 hours already) and I'm done with uploading his videos. Here they are:

"And this is London!"
No idea what's doing on
Walking
Stupid dog
Dogfight!
DaveGilbert fails at deleting a file
Top secret material from Ben Jordan 6!
Flying the kite
Video games cause violent behaviour
Grundislav chasing CJ

(if some of those don't work properly, let me know and I'll upload again. I had to pause and resume the upload process a couple of times)

Pablo made it back to Finland, in fact, he's sitting on my couch right now!

I spent all my money last year!

Well, actually I do have some money, but I need it for living! I was going to spend all summer working (and saving all that money for future Brittens/Mittens/whateverittens), and then I failed to get a summer job. So now I would have time to travel and meet you guys, but no extra money really... I'm doing my best to go next year though!

!

If m0ds can't make it, I'm not coming either! Oh wait, I'm not going anyways.

Well, I'm amazed so many people are actually going even though I am not going!

PS. Have fun in Wales, everyone. ;)

Time for another round?

I moved out in August and because I needed to get a flat really bad, I had to rent one that is definitely not the best option for a student. Expensive and far from the center and my school.

From my living room I can see trees, a road and another building!

From my kitchen I can see... well, more trees!

Oh look, a squirrel! I truly live in nature.

It's not like I live in the middle of a forest, though! There just happens to be lots of trees and a nature reserve right next to my house. It's a very nice area to live in, just a bit too far from everything for my needs. Oh well.

Actually, that doesn't work either. I'd like to play the demo of Quirk Pantaloon again, though!

EDIT: Yes, Gilbot is right. It works now.

We also watched those silly television mobile games in that pub we went to.

It was nice to see you guys briefly on Friday. I had actually forgotten all about Lapaset, I thought it hadn't even began until Inkoddi messaged me on Thursday night. I had other stuff that needed to be taken care of earlier that week though, so I couldn't have attended for more days anyways.

Good photos, by the way!

And finally, no, I still haven't had a haircut.

General Discussion / Re: Facebook

I joined, but haven't found actual use for it yet. I tried to search for my friends, but didn't find any! Except for some AGSers, of course. I'll let my account be there, but I doubt I find any use for it.

Hehe, it reminds me of older Lemon Demon tracks! Not lyrically perhaps, but the melodies and backing vocals sound very similar. I remember some of your older songs and I must say this is a great improvement. I personally like your voice, but I kinda agree with Evil on that the vocals sound a bit... how to say it... messy? Then again, I'm listening this on a laptop without proper speakers or headphones, it probably sounds much different with better speakers.

Also, as you said yourself, some variation would be good. But overall I do like it and you're doing well, just keep it up. :)

When I play a game that has graphics ripped from, for example, Monkey Island, I can't help but feel I'm playing a Monkey Island game even if the story has nothing to do with Monkey Island. Ripped graphics also make the game seem kind of cheaper and not so good in my eyes, no matter how good the rest of the game is. Personally, I'd much rather play a game with simple but original graphics than a game with graphics ripped from other games.

You say you don't have much time to work on graphics, but I would still advice you to learn some basic techniques and rules, and visit Critics Lounge frequently for advice and tips. Find a simple but effective style you like and try to emulate it. But as Ghost said, do your best trying to avoid ripping!

General Discussion / Re: Joining the Army
Sun 10/06/2007 12:04:04
Oh boy, just last night I had a dream that I was back in the army, until I realized I'm done with my military service already! After that the dream turned into an awesome horror action flick with Arnold Swarchzenegger and a Venom-like creature chasing me and my friends!

Anyways, as mentioned already, Finland has compulsory military service. Looking back now I wish I had chosen the civil service instead, even though it's 13 months instead of 6 or 12 months you have to be in the army. Many people want to go to the army though and it's a piece of cake if you're motivated. I wasn't, so it was hell. If someone wants to pursue career in the army, that's fine with me, nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't do that myself, and compulsory military service is just ridiculous. No country should have that.

(this is slightly off-topic, sorry about that)

Seeing that we're discussing the games database, would it be impossible/impractical to include an option to delete your own games from the database? It's kind of embarrassing to see some of my old crappy games there and I'd like to remove them from the database (what the hell was I thinking when I made those games?!). The games are really _not worth playing_ and I don't think the download links even work anymore.

Or would that mess the database up somehow? I'm just asking, because years ago I added the infamous Goldlagoon to the Adventure developers' games database and it seems to be next to impossible to remove the game from there now. I've actually contacted Erwin and some other people about removing the entry, but nothing has happened. I just don't think that the game is going to be finished in the next decade or so, so there's no point in having it in the games database (Erwin, if you read this, is there anything you can do?).

The reason that so many of you believe in evolution is not because of your own free thought, it's because it was taught in schools.

We were taught religion in school. But I still don't believe in God (and I even got good grades in religion!).

But you know what annoys me about F2? Right now I'm in the Den, and I need to talk to Mom, but that bastard Fred is in the doorway, and as he's a dialogue-scripted NPC I can't push him out of the way.

ARGH!  >:(

Yeah! That has happened to me a couple of times too and it's annoying as hell! I can't remember how I've gotten past him though, either I've loaded an earlier save game (and played some parts all over again) or I've just left Den and come back later. But I hate it when that happens!

And I'm currently playing Mega-Man 2 & 3 on the NES (thank god for emulators and save states ;))

Excellent games both but... save states?! You don't need to save while playing those two. :P
