haha! I like that, TK.

Everyone knows a creepy lair is also a given. None of this "I live with my mum" crap! You need laser guns and a moat. Yes - a moat. They are all the range in Transylvania.

And eat a bagel and a protein shake for breakfast. That is the true madman meal of the morning.

Nothing beats the good old sideways glance.

Walk down the street and choose random people. Look at them menacingly out of the corner of your eyes. And 'accidentally' go shopping for weapons. Go into Kmart and look around the isles for a couple of minutes, and then go to an attendant who you KNOW has been watching you, and ask:
"Hi. I was just wondering which isle your nuclear weapons are in. OH WAIT! THIS IS KMART!! CRAP! erm... pretend I didn't say anything." Then walk away hurriedly whilst mumbling "revenge shall be mine."

That usually works when my bad-ass-ego needs a boost.

I must say, I would rather a world full of Americans than a world full of Iraqis.

That doesn't really make sense. If we were ALL iraqis, then we wouldn't be fighting over anything, because we'd all agree.

And if there WERE civil wars blah blah blah, it's not like they don't happen in america/germany/australia anyway...

This might sound purely sick, but does anyone have a link to the FULL footage? I don't want to see a guy beheaded so to speak, but I've seen the awful stuff the americans have done to the iraqis, and I'm interested (not fascinated) to see how they reacted in person...

I'd have to say stick with mp3 - midis vary so much from computer to computer. My second comp has such a BAAAAAD general midi, and everything sounds complete rubbish. At least with mp3 you make something you like and it sounds universal.

What ElectricMonk was talking about is this: The first couple of long notes on the synth-violin 'clash' with the lower bass notes that come in. Try singing the melody, and then switch to singing the bass when it comes in. You'll find it nearly impossible to do because the notes are so unexpected. That's not necessarily a bad thing always, however with a tense scene, there should be an element of the expected, so that the attention is put on the action in the game and not on the music.

And try adding a minor or diminished (even augmented) harmony underneath. Just having a one-note-melody doesn't add to the drama.

If you need a hand with what minor chords etc are, highlight below. If you know what I'm talking about, just skip over.

Spoiler
Major Chords = the first, third and fifth notes of a scale (e.g C,E,G)
Minor Chords = lower the middle note in the major triad (e.g C, Eb,G)
Diminished = Now lower the top note of the minor triad (e.g C,Eb,Gb)
Augmented = Raise the top note of the major triad (e.g C,E,G#)
[close]

That said, I don't think this is a bad piece at all. It certainly doesn't deserve negative feedback. Just a couple of simple edits and it'll be great!

Are you like a sub-version of Yufster from the past before you released a game?

I can't think of too many people who'd say what rhymes with butt...

What a great game! Go for it, minimi. The more people you offend, the better (joke).

I say that because of "christian double standards". It's 'okay' to watch porno's and graphic violence and heaps of swearing, but it's degrading to be "forced" to sit through a christian game where the most offensive words you hear are "god loves you". Yeah - doesn't make sense to me either.

Anyway - good luck with it.

Pirating is wrong. Full Stop. You can't deny that illegally obtaining software is going to put you on a moral highground. And, whilst it won't close heaven's gates, you'll have to be prepared to take the consequences.

That said, I don't think any number of people saying "it's bad" is going to stop piraters. me included. I have a couple of programs that I (unproudly) must say aren't the most legal pieces of software in the universe. I hardly ever use them, but I keep them for bragging rights. I know I shouldn't, but it's always fun to find a completely arrogant and stuck up computer snob and say "well I have Corel Painter 8 and Photoshop CS and Fruity Loops whatever-the-new-version-is and YOU don't. Sucker".

Pirating is basically the same as shoplifting, except hardly anyone chases you when you do it on the net. Why's that? Because the companies are already so damn rich they couldn't care less. If they REALLY wanted to stop it, they wouldn't release stupid 30-day-trials where you only need a simple keygen to unlock it. They'd upload SPECIALLY made trials WITHOUT a save/load, and with only half the number of available tools...

That's my sad attempt at justification, anyhow...

o...k. I'm slightly confused. Do you mean is it just a plot of the game?

Well... in a sense, I suppose yes, but don't go ahead and write stuff like "pick up book and use on fridge".

You're writing a story with descriptions and dialogue and stuff. In the same way that Sherlock Holmes was a book, you are to write a story.

I guess it's not vital that you include EVERYTHING I stipulated in the first post, but the closer the better. Also, remember, everything is open to interpretation, so if you can make something else out of what I said, as opposed to the obvious, then go for it.

This idea be cool!  I like it muchly.

yes.... obviously it was a great topic.

I am hoping people ARE writing, and they've just forgotten to post...

I never said the ONLY influence is how the music sounds (though really, it should be) - I agree that there are a host of reasons to like music, but it DOES piss me off when people feel they have to make good video clips to MAKE UP for their bad songs.

I shall try and enter, still, though I seem to be having trouble with my speakers. Bass = 100%, Treble = less than 10% :( It's hard to hear what I'm doing when all I get is Thud Thud Thud from the base.

True, Mappomedia was an experience to remember. I don't know why that one was locked at all - there was room for a million more of DG's witty posts.... and I wanted to see him (Not DG, the other dude) take down his site for copyright reasons :D

argh! I can't stand this game. It's driven me nuts too many times.

Which seems in complete contradiction to me bumping this thread...

Kinoko, you realise that's only because we have a crap City Mall, yes? :D

MUSIC STUFF-O-RAMA! If you like your music bold and epic, with a hint of romantacism or action; or maybe a dark, bombastic overture with soaring melodies, then call me.

STORY-BOARD-R-US I'm an avid story writer, and thus - yes, I write stories. Got a problem with your plot? Need to come up with a reason why Space Commander John would ever want to combine the egg-yolk with the water buffalo whilst hovering above the Thicket of Solitude on the second Thursday of the month? I've got the answers. (seriously - I do have an answer for that whole John Space Commander issue...)

SPELING 'N' GRAMAR THE RITE WAY Obviously you can see that spelling and grammar are two things I'm quite passionate about. If you put ONE single comma out of place I WILL find it, so it's best to ask me BEFORE the game's released to the public :D

VOICE-A-THON I don't have my microphone plugged in at this moment (Saturday 8th May), so immediately-necessary voices can't be done, but if you have a couple of weeks to spare, I do a damn good impression of Bob from Dogma. If, on the other hand, you want me to SPEAK, I'm an 18 year old male in Australia, so you decide what voices would be good for me...

don't give horns the melody on midi ever!

in real life, they sound fantabulous, but on midi - as you say - they are ear-shredding. I find anything above middle-F to be bordering on painful. I think a few groovy piano dooba-dee-doos would work nicely. or a dooba-dee-daa if you get stuck.

The Yahtzee thread made me laugh, I must say. People were so reluctant to bring the discussion back up, but the newer members who didn't know what happened just KEPT ON pestering, so all sorts of wonderful posts erupted :D

EDIT: most threads by kill666, as well. Not because he makes good threads, but the replies he gets never cease to amuse me. (No hard feelings, k, kill666?)

General Discussion / Re: Seeking approval
Sat 08/05/2004 05:02:34
wow - this thread really got me thinking, you know. There aren't too many threads I read that make me think "I wonder..."

I have always had approval from my parents, but it doesn't seem 'sincere' to me, since there are many aspects of my life they don't know about, and would probably change their view of me slightly. I always used to be a social outcast at primary school. I only had one friend, and he had a severe speech-impediment that meant he was the most picked-on guy in the school. In the end we got into a fight (over REALLY trivial stuff) and for the last six months of my primary-school life I didn't have one person I felt I could talk sincerely to.

I guess this effected the way I entered highschool: vary wary, and avoiding the 'popular' people. As the years went on I made more and more friends, and while I was never popular, I could safely say I had a network of friends. But it was never strong enough for me. I felt like the kid who sits on the outside of the circle looking in, and no one looks back to see if you are okay. In order to get attention I became a terrible liar, and would make up the BIGGEST crap in the world. Seriously - you would not believe how much crap I could spin when the 'need' came to me.

Beginning of last year, however, I re-affirmed my Christian faith, and suddenly just emerged from my shell. I changed my body image completely, as a sort of sign that I was a new person, and now that I'm at uni, I have a bunch of great, sincere friends that I can talk to about anything.

So you ask what kept me going for almost-eleven years that I was an outcast? And you know, what - I have no idea. It wasn't my parents; they didn't know how much of a 'loser' I was, and I certainly didn't have too many friends to rely on, so I can only say I went on because I HAD to...
