Yay! This was certainly a surprise to see, but one which I am totally happy to witness. And yes, you are right, for a first attempt, it DID come out quite nicely. In fact, I'd say it came out pretty damn fine.

A couple of pointers - there's something about the stairs. They themselves have been drawn from a perspective that suggests they go DOWN, and the wall rail would agree with that, but the free-standing rail on the right makes it look like they go UP.

Also I'd change the texture you're using for the floor - it just doesn't quite suit the flat colour palette you're using for the rest of the picture. But if you DO stick with it, at least make the carpet texture a little different. It doesn't look like a throw rug in front of the door right now (like I think it's supposed to be). It just looks like a piece of the same carpet that's been dyed red with a black border.

Apart from that - my wholehearted congratulations - and I hope to see more of this quality work soon :)

Registered and put up three poems. Might put up my prose later, if I can be bothered to break it up into 5000 word segments... :p

This site looks great - has a lot of potential. Will be reccommending to my writing friends.

Every time I read the station name I keep seeing "Kylie Minogue"...

Maybe I've been watching her stage show just a little too closely...

I'm lost as to who is who....

The left sprite looks more like a security guard to me, since he's in uniform, but I get the impression every one else thinks it's the dude with the green spaceship on his shirt...

uh, purely for grammatical reasons (I am assuming you were asking if it was the 'right' thing to say, rather than just saying 'I don't know and don't care'):

There's nothing wrong with saying it's very good to use, but people will usually talk about it in terms of how hard it was to use.
ie - it's very easy to use  OR it's very hard to use

Now, for the art, I absolutely love it. The subway style is extremely atmospheric, however I'd still agree about maybe adding a background through the windows. Even if you're in a tunnell, you usually still see the grey blur of bricks or something similar.

And I like your 4th sprite the best. Maybe his elbows are too far down, but I think overall he's the best looking

hmm, this information has been out for a while. It's widely known Windows wanted/wants to use Trusted Computing with its Longhorn release.

Realistically, it won't happen. Well, okay, it probably will but it won't inflame with the hype everyone's given it. There are other alternatives out there - maybe not as big and corporate, but if people really are scared crapless about all this, then they'll go to a different company, and pretty quickly that company will be getting lots of money to improve, and the rich competitors will have to back down.

It's quite a scary concept, though. Very scary indeed, if you really have a look at it's potential

General Discussion / Re: Many Forms of Piracy

I'm still trying to figure out what the hell this debate is about!

The title talks about all different forms of piracy, but the majority DC's post was all about spyware, and now we're putting price in a ratio to fun.

I thought he just wanted to know how to get rid of his Jive Record ads? ? ?

I agree 100% that the biggest foul is not to include screenshots. I guess it's often because the artwork isn't completely finished or whatever, and people don't want to post anything until it's reached the final stage. But - as you say - I am far more likely to download a game with a couple of not-quite-perfected screenshots than I am to download a game with an ambitious plot and no pictures at all.

And I also think people rely too much on the plot to sell the game for them. Yeah - it's true that a game can be really popular and only have mediocre graphics, but somehow that often seems to translate into a complete lack of respect for all other aspects. I get this impression of "wow - my plot is great, so great, in fact, that you can ignore my shocking graphics which are so shocking I'm too embarrassed to post them here, however should you comment on them I will totally attack you for being only interested in visuals and ignoring the depth and meaning behind my story." And more often than not, in trying to tell the plot, they do everything but. They describe scenery, they talk about how much beer the pub sells etc, but the entire plot synopsis could be covered in 2 sentences, which don't even get a mention until the 3rd paragraph.

Because of this, I'm really pleased the way the ATC has been organized. Each team has submitted a brief synopsis (cutting out the crap) along with a test screenshot or two. If all game-releases had that kind of thought and production, I'd be downloading ten times the amount of games, I imagine :D.

That said - I think there are a lot of examples of super-good-game-posting on AGS. I was thinking largely of another forum...

If it weren't for the fact that I don't believe at all in self promotion, I might have suggested a "Most unexpected post" category, wherein I might have suggested a certain member coming out of the closet, only to find this certain member may have had aids. That would be a jolly great award.

But - luckily for you - I don't believe in self promotion and would never sink to such horrible depths just to get a certain member an award (which this member would undoubtedly deserve).

But if I DID......

Well maybe if this thread had come about five months earlier... :)

For us in Australia, the holidays are just ending.

But, were this not the case, I could forsee myself most definitely sitting in front of the TV for a good week or two

Tanker, I have faith that - should you put your mind to it - you could make a perfectly good game. There is no doubt about it. But it seems like every thread is about a new idea, or a different style, and if people are going to sign up to a team, they want to be confident that it won't fall apart the minute they hit a bump in the road.

Stick to a style, practice it for a bit, create characters, put them into a plot and then whack in a few puzzles. Then ask for help putting it all together.

Don't know if you realize, but a large portion of the stable ags community is involved with the ATC. At this point, I doubt any of them would be willing to commit to 2 projects at once.

But at any rate, good luck getting done what you want done.

Don't bother. Trust me.

People will judge you all the more.

It's just easier to say you live on the forums, anyway. It stops all the follow-up questions.

Among other possibilities, http://imageshack.us is probably the most popular, and quite likely the quickest way to upload. Looking forward to seeing this update :)

Quoteif a human can recognize the distiction between a male and female voice, than so can a machine

I know what you're thinking, but as DG so kindly [read: sarcastically/fantasizingly] put it, that's not a logical argument. Just because a human can do it is no reason for a machine to be able to do it.

There are programs out there that "change" recorded speech, and have presets called "woman", "man" and "giant", yes, but they don't really change the voice. They just shove it up or down a couple of pitches, which in all honesty turns out crap 99% of the time. Lowering your voice makes you sound like a transvestite with a mouth full of salsa. Going up, you sound like a chipmunk.

To the best of my knowledge (which I must admit is very limited, since I'm no engineer/scientist), that is the limitation of technology, with several good theoretical reasons behind it.

But you CAN get a decent enough sounding female voice if you're willing to experiment. Just record yourself talking in falsetto (your upper register, like you would when imitating an annoying little girl) and then muck around with that a bit. You can often get a fairly-believable woman if you find the right settings.

Okay, assuming you weren't joking, you mean you saw the thread but didn't read it? :D

General Discussion / Re: Red Nose Day!
Sat 12/03/2005 00:10:40
Well Red Nose Day went right over the top of most people I know. It didn't even get a mention on the news as far as I saw, which I personally think is a bit sloppy. Just a few years ago I remember it being the first item on the news, and the cameras would pan around classrooms full of kids wearing coloured noses just to get on tv. Now it seems like no one could care less

EDIT: Yes, I know this isn't red, however I absolutely refuse to delete the 'u' from 'colour'. There are other countries outside the u.s...

Totally agree with all that's been said.

I prefer the simply 16 colours by far.
