Yup, this is most definitely a worthwhile program. I've had it running for about a total of 15 hours (not all at once, though) and nothing else has changed one iota, except that I was lucky enough to successfully fold a protein. Yay me.

I'm in Brisbane, and I'm interested, but it depends on a lot of things. Like a lot of people, I couldn't commit until less-vague details were given, but if you're just trying to gauge interest levels, then you can definitely include me.

Yeah, tanker, this is GOOD STUFF. And I mean that. I really love the slightly wacky perspective. It's really comical - like krazy said, a bit DOTT.

I guess it could use some furniture. Maybe a table or a vase or suchlike, but definitely keep this style. It suits you!

Yeah, I decided against the mp3. I didn't have a flute soundfont good enough to do it justice. I could get the strings pretty awesome, but if fell apart with a crappy flute. I was thinking of changing the instrument, but then figured it's not really my perogative.

Oh well, as zor said, that really is perfect for an MI style, and I would take that as a huge compliment...

Sounds like spyware...You think if it was that great they'd advertise it on the news and stuff

Incidentally, if you visit the website, they seem to have had very good media coverage, from nbc, bbc, the times, howard hughes Medical Institute etc.

Thanks a lot sedriss. I've checked it out, and it definitely does no appear to be spy-ware. It gathers no information about you and does not have any bundled software. It seems like a genuine way to help, however slow the cure-finding process may be...

The new trailer looks awesome. I am so pleased. The previous one had me really worried. It looked so silly. But THIS....well... it just looks fantastic!

I'd be reluctant to say he can't emulate the style of the game, and I don't even think I'd say he's being lazy. Yes, the perspective is off, the lighting isn't quite right etc, but he's made an effort.

I think the most dangerous thing you're doing, Tanker, is just whacking NEW things on OLD backgrounds. People have played these games, and we don't take nicely to changes unless you have an absolutely FAN-FRIGGING-TASTIC reason for doing so. As far as I can see, that sign serves absolutely no purpose, except to say "hey - look at me! I'm a new sign. Aren't I cool", which opens you up to a LOT of criticism from people who'll say "it wasn't broken, why did you try to fix it?"

I don't want to be cynical, since I think a lot of other people are doing a fine job of that (;)), but if you DO make changes, Tanker, make sure they fit the style EXACTLY, and that you have a ground-breaking reason for them. Otherwise this will just be another fangame people will turn their backs on.

All the best...

I was gonna say exactly the same thing as Stick...

The closest I've come to it was in Myst III, with Saavedro, or however you spell it. It was great to see him as this evil character, and then to learn that after what he'd been through, you sort of feel sorry for him, and understand what he's doing.

But I've still never played a game where I've finished it and thought "wow! that was like playing a movie!", which is an experience I would love to have, and I know it could be done, if the game developers just put a little more effort into things. I'm bloody sick of all these FPS that are "revolutionary" and they're not at all...

I agree with Pablo - there's something about this that's distinctly MI2, though I can't really place what.

As for your midi, I would recommend using soundfonts, as opposed to a program that will convert them to wav (there isn't a decent free one anyway...). You still compose as normal, but, in essence, instead of the computer playing the sounds from its default GM soundbank, you can tell it that an instrument is to be played by a specific soundfont. These are nearly ALWAYS dramatically better than your general midi, and if you hunt hard enough, you can get free ones that are pretty hard to tell apart from the real thing.

Exact instructions for installing vary from soundcard to soundcard etc, but there's a tutorial for pretty much every one out there on the net, so it should be fairly straight forward... Once you've done it once, it's a dead simple process that you'll never forget.

I might even convert yours just as an example to show you. But not tonight :p Tomorrow morning... hehe. If I remember...

sorry c-off, but I still can't get that link (either of them) to work in firefox or ie...

try what zor suggests... 2dadventure is good for anything under 1mb... I'm assuming since it's midi, this will be fine.

You've got me really curious now :)

I don't have a problem downloading 50 megs, since I'm on cable, but I probably would only do it if I had a couple of kick-arse screenshots to tempt me. Otherwise I just tend to assume it's 50mb of music and speech...

But I guess having played Apprentice II, it will probably be a game I'll enjoy muchly... (EDIT: Assuming you are comparing it to Apprentice II because it equates in awesomeness...)

I'm working on it now...

EDIT: Okay, I typed that the same time I clicked the link. But the link doesn't work for me, so I guess I'm NOT working on it after all...

That is some most excellent news!

That should give you some real insight into what the world needs to be like, how the characters interact, what space you have to work within the story etc.

Remember, what seems like criticism from us guys isn't about you. We just want to see you make a great game, and our stern advice/instruction is hopefully going to help you through in the right direction.

General Discussion / Re: Male relationships

And just because someone COULD be straight doesn't mean they ARE.

I realise you're speaking purely from opinion (which had me a little confused at first, I thought you were specifically asking for what OTHER people thought), but then it seems a little pointless, since nothing we say will change your mind and vice versa. If you believe that we are all born with the disposition of heterosexuality (which I will not get into - let's assume you're right), then of COURSE you're going to look for a way to explain how such acts are nothing more than platonic and do not indicate anything of a gay sexual nature. There isn't much point of discussion at that point.

[on a side note, I completely agree with whoever said gay and homosexual are the same thing. There may be some defined discrepancies, but ultimately - in this culture - they are exactly the same. If anything, I am MORE insulted by the person who feels they HAVE to say 'homosexual' to avoid confusion than the person who runs past me shouting out "you queer fag!". Not to say I am insulted by you, but I would be if I met you on the street and noticed you doing everything in your power NOT to say "gay"]

And yes, you're right, I suppose EVERYONE in the book/game had the potential to be gay, or at least bi-sexual, BUT, if you read the books, then it becomes completely clear that this guy not only MIGHT be gay, but IS gay/bi.

I do know what you are getting at to some degree - in the same way everyone tried to claim Sam and Frodo were gay/bisexual just because they had a deep brotherly love for each other. But here you're defending the heterosexuality of a being that the author herself has made out to be gay.

Erik, your argument doesn't quite make complete sense. Your're saying that every story/scene should be able to be taken at face value, and yet seem to also not like the fact that people are taking this scene from GKII at...amazingly...face value (in today's culture).

Seriously, if you walked out your front door to see two men stroking each others hair - what would you think? There are MUCH better ways to indicate platonic love between people, and as open as Terran is, I doubt he'd actually be touching his male friend like that PURELY to show his non-sexual affection.

I, personally, agree with DragonRose. If they didn't want that sort of ambiguity, they wouldn't have portrayed it like they did. It doesn't particularly BOTHER me whether he's gay or not, but I think if people want to assume that he's gay, they have as much right to do so as you do to say "No! NO! HE'S NOT! STOP JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS!"

And I also agree with Rose that men DON'T bond better than women. In fact, I think men in general are CRAP at bonding, which is why, when it happens, it gets so much publicity. Women bond 10 times quicker than most men, so it's considered 'commonplace'.

Don't you think you're jumping to conclusions, here? ;)

mmm... sorry if that sounded a bit nit-picky or snobbish. I've got a pounding headache.

What SSH said seems a fair enough assessment of what happens with the 'popular' threads. But then, doesn't that sort of go AGAINST the definition of "popular" - only being brought up every so often, as opposed to being regularly checked and posted in? Or was I terribly stupid at school for not realising that the TRULY popular kids were the ones who only got spoken to once every three weeks?

Anyway, what brings me back is an update. The 'doctor' wants another blood sample. Apparently my last one somehow got contaminated. Well, at least that's what seems to be the case. They wouldn't tell me exactly why they needed another one, suffice to say that "my previous blood-drawing might have been compromised in some way, and they would prefer to err on the side of caution."

So off I go down tomorrow morning to have a nice big needle stuck in me again, seeing my life-blood flow through some curly tubes into a jar and into the hands of some complete stranger who's about to tell me if I've got aids or not.

Ain't life grand?
