So I'm sure you've heard the news by now. What are your thoughts? Was justice served? Did America have the right to storm into another country and kill a man? Is it a big conspiracy? Something to do with the Illuminati (hahaha)?

General Discussion / Best place to elope?
Mon 18/04/2011 10:26:36
So I'm wanting to elope. By myself :D

Haha but seriously I want to emmigrate to some other country. Been wanting to do this for ages, so I was just wondering if you guys could help me out.
I'm looking for someplace preferably western, where they speak English. I'm thinking either America, Britain or Canada or something, but I need advice on the best states/cities etc. A warm climate would also be a plus!

Thanks!

Btw, I'm from Cape Town, South Africa if anyone's interested.

Well, last night it was my friend's mother's 50th birthday, and needless to say I ended up drinking a bit too much... So there I am, passed out on the couch minding my own business when a few mates decided it would be hilarious to shave all my eyebrows off... Haha I look like one of those observers from Fringe now!

Anyone else had anything similar happen to them? Or have any idea on how long they take to grow back?

I'm currently sporting pencilled in 'brows... o_O

Critics' Lounge / Blues: Solos 'n Basslines!
Mon 08/11/2010 07:48:48
Download the track here!

It's a short blues solo in E minor, what I was looking for is if anyone could help me make the bassline more bluesy, or do you think it's fine like it is? Also if the drumbeat doesn't sound right feel free to critique it :D

Here's a midi version if anyone was interested to see which notes were being played.

Thanks!

General Discussion / Cubase Help
Fri 26/02/2010 23:03:52
Hi guys.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a small problem that could save me a lot of time.
I was wondering if there was any function or macro I could create that could solve this problem. Currently my audio track looks like this:

(I'm using crudely drawn MSPaint examples because I don't have Cubase on this PC.)

What I want to do is remove the spaces in between the pieces of audio so it ends up looking something like this:

Does anyone know how I could do this nice and easily instead of manually?

Thanks.

For this competition I want YOU to write me a waltz!

For bonus points make it a post-apocalyptic waltz - something from straight after 2012!

Now get cracking!

P.S. I will judge the winner at the end of the competition, and only original tracks made for this contest will be accepted.

General Discussion / New Indiana Jones film
Mon 28/09/2009 10:01:24
Hey, just noticed there's a new Indy film in the works.

Just wondering if anyone knew any info about it?

Here's the IMDB page.

Looks like Indy is searching for the burial ground of Ghengis Khan! The chinese seem to be the main antagonists searching for the holy cross, drenched in the blood of Jesus Christ, which seems to be the holy relic in the this film. It apparently grants invincibility to it's owner or something.

Lucas said he's looking to put Shia Lebouf as the main character and have Harrison Ford with a role like Sean Connery's in The Last Crusade.

Hah... Thursday night was a night I'll never forget. I mean, remember o_O
We all got pretty drunk at my apartment then hit the town. I lost all my friends and woke up with a broken ankle and extremely bruised back. I have no recollection of the events between 9pm and 2:30 in the morning. What happened that night is a mystery to us all!

So has anyone else had any insane drunken stories? Share them here!

This contest I couldn't make up my mind so I'm going to give a a choice between three topics, so choose the one that appeals to you the most!

First topic:

Pop rock - a blemish and commercialisation of rock, or just a few catchy tunes about angsty teenagers? You decide!

In this version of the tune contest you will be required to write a pop rock tune. Think of cheesy bands like Blink182, Sum41, Avril Lavigne etc.

Some examples of tunes I've written for fun:

Things to keep in mind:

  • Switching bass notes - Pop rock tunes often use a form of pedalpoint to create their riffs, so playing the same riff with different bass notes often works.
  • Breakdown - Often after the second chorus there will be a breakdown in which only the bass guitar plays. The quiet part of the song.
  • Catchy chorus - Pop rock always has catchy choruses in order to sell the song.

Second Topic

Detective music! In this topic you will be required to write a detective theme song. Think either upbeat brass blasting an action packed tune, or sleazy backalley music with smoky saxophones blaring over some thick pads.

Examples:

Things to keep in mind:

  • It's all about atmosphere, so go for presenting a piece that makes the listener believe he is hearing a dark brooding tale of a man who's been tortured by the scum(m) of the city.
  • Alternately, present a more upbeat piece, which shows the protagonist fighting crime. You can make it a bit more comical if you wish. (like the theme song from Sam and Max).
  • Think swing! - Swing beats with jazz atmosphere!

Third topic:

Mexican folk music! Think of the sountrack to Grim Fandango, and other mariachi bands. The aim is to write a piece utilizing trumpets, trombones - Big band stuff!

Examples:

Things to keep in mind:

  • Trumpets, trombones, tubas - Whatever you wish. Think nice folk melodies on brass or woodwind with simple stringed or brass backing instruments.
  • Flamenco guitar - You could use flamenco guitars to back up your melody with quick fills.

Competition rules:

  • Entries must be at least 45 seconds long.
  • Entries can be in .mp3 .ogg or .midi
  • Entries must be in by the end of Tuesday 2nd December GMT.
  • Participants must indicate which topic they have chosen.
  • I will select a winner after that time. Entries will be judged on atmosphere, structure and choice of instruments.

Looking forward to some nice entries. Remember, have fun!

Critics' Lounge / Mexican Polka =)
Wed 29/10/2008 22:09:15
Hey. Been long since I last posted here.

I made this piece yesterday, kind of a mexican polka thing. It's in midi 'cos I don't really have anything better to do it in.
It's my first time trying to do music for brass instruments, so all constructive critiscm is good!

Listen.

(also, I have no formal music training, so please, any constructive critiscm/pointers/tips or any advice is greatly welcomed. Be as harsh as possible! I can take it. ;) )

Thanks!

General Discussion / Lucasart's Adlib music
Sat 30/08/2008 19:27:12
Well I've been doing a lot of research lately, and I just can't found out anything on how to make music the way Lucasarts did for their games like Loom, Foa and Monkey Island etc.
I don't want to get the hardware, but I was wondering if there's any software out there capable of producing those kind of sounds from a midi file perhaps. Maybe a plugin for Fruity Loops?

Does anyone have any ideas that can help me?

General Discussion / A video we made.
Mon 26/02/2007 07:17:21
Well my friends and I were bored so we got down to some video editing.

Check it out!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=are-64LZidMb0

It is a bit emo yes, but it's all in good fun.

Tell me what you think, any feedback is appreciated.

EDIT: For some reason the forum is editing the url for txt style spelling. Just copy and past the url and change the 'are' to a normal 'r'. Thanks :D

General Discussion / Help me! Hard drives!!
Fri 09/02/2007 18:03:31
My portable hard drive crashed two days ago. Everything was on there --  my whole life. Everything I've done in the past 7 years was on there... My AGS games and source code, the songs I've written, all my 50 gigs of music, all my irreplaceable photos, pictures I've drawn, stories I've written...

Does anyone know if there's anything I could possibly do to retrieve this information without going to the extremes of spending thousands of bucks to have some scientist sift through my disks?

Any help would be appreciated.

(btw, it's the hard disk that stopped working, the USB interface on the portable is fine.)

Again, thanks a lot for any help.

Critics' Lounge / Crit my webdesign!

http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/main.gif

Tell me what you think. It's the website for my band. Right now all I have is this image, but once the design is finalized I'll seek a web designer.
How's the layout? I'm probably gonna add a blue background or something later.

(those photos are just stock photos from google, they will be replaced!).

General Discussion / Yahoo account hacking.
Tue 29/08/2006 10:41:33
Ok how many of you have had your accounts stolen?

Apparently there's this thing going around which leads you to some GeoCities website (which belongs to yahoo so I see how some people can be fooled) which then asks you for your username and password, saves it then logs you out and changes all your personal information and sends an email to all your contacts telling them to do the same.

I personally don't use Yahoo but both my parents do and both of them have been victim to this scam. I know my mom is pretty devastated because she kept a lot of stuff in her inbox, and all her contacts etc.

Is there any way to rectify this? Will Yahoo do anything about getting the appropriate accounts back to their rightful owners?

Please help!

Msn Live has just been released -- and so far it looks like a friggin kickass program. It has a massload of new features seriously rocks.

(You can get Msn Live here.)

A really good feature is that now you can send/recieve offline messages, chat while your status is set to 'Appear Offline'.

An even BETTER feature imo is that it now has 'sharing folders'. This is a folder that is shared between you and one contact. Either one of you can put files in there, edit/remove existing files etc. You have a different folder for each contact.
Anyway down to my problem: When I try to initiate 'sharing folders' it says my pc does not support them, than asks me whether I want help with the problem. I say yes and it takes me to the help file (which is very unhelpful). Basically I just found out that both parties need XP and Msn Live, (which is == true). I am running XP and I DO have Msn Live. Anyway just wanted to know if anyone has any answers to why this wouldn't be working?

So enjoy this kickass piece of software and get chatting! (and I'm not usually one to get excited about any software from Microsoft).

General Discussion / Ratings?
Thu 25/05/2006 11:31:32
Just a question I've been wondering about for a while ...

How do ratings work? I mean, when I watch a program on TV, I can check out the ratings the next day, but how on earth do those work?
I mean, how do they know how many people watched their show? How could they possible know that!!!

If anyone has any answers, please tell!
