Sprite Jam: A Novel Concept

This Sprite Jam;

1) Call to mind a fictional character from any novel/novella/short story you have read, and make a sprite based on how you imagine the character would look.

2) Find a short passage from the story (possibly, although not necessarily, one that describes your chosen character sprite in some way), and post this with your sprite.

If your chosen book/story has been made into a movie, (for instance, you chose Winston Smith from George Orwell's 1984, or Paul Atreides from Frank Herbert's Dune) you can definitely use the movie's visual interpretation of the character as a guide if you like. Same applies with any cover art for the book.

Deadline is the 7th January 2011.

*BONUS - Include an item from the story too. Could be the rat cage from 1984, perhaps a crysknife from Dune.

*Industrial designs or creature designs will also be allowed (ie, vehicle, machine or monster from the story is okay too).

*Your sprite does not have to match any written description exactly. Artisic licence here will be very broad, so there's no need to re-read your particluar story to get the sprite %100 accurate. Many cover artists for novels deviate quite a lot from the author's descriptions, and so can you for this competition.

I think we all had a lot of fun with this comp (I know I did) all the entries are just fantastic, unique, and charming to the last.
For myself it was a great chance to lose my dirty tools and do some old school pixellation for a change, which was a real blast- so thanks ProgZmax for a great round.

I got an entry half finished, but will be knee deep in work for the next few days, so I hope the deadline could be extended a day or so.

Re: workshop

Zyndikate and I talked about it some week ago, and we thought around mid January would be a good time for a new workshop.

We're hoping to get people to contribute mini tutorials about stuff they think is important (hopefully in addition to participation), so if you have something cooking, or got some idea for a tiny to large tutorial, all would be welcome.

Deadline is now extended by 2 days. New deadline is 24th December!

Workshop sounds hella cool! I'd be happy to contribute a mini-tutorial, not that I have any idea what I'm doing!

Ooh hella nice Derrick! A very good interpretation of the guidelines.

Color me impressed! Well done Zyndikate- that's right on the money now!

gah cheater sslaxx!

Pinback that looks awesome. Would have played it if I had the chance:)

Thanks!
Pathologic is awesome in my opinion- a real one-of-a-kind game (although technically it's billed as Action/Adventure- I expect to lose points for this) and some great music in it to boot. The only real negative in Pathologic is the translated dialogue is almost incomprehensible.

Beautiful entry Zyndikate, although I think you may have skimmed over the competition requirements a little too quickly;

...the sole entrance to your room must be an opening in the ceiling.

The door to the right of your background is one entrance too many I'm afraid.
The restrictions of this competition were imposed on everyone- and it wont be fair to those who keep to the rules if you don't suffer some kind of penalty. I will be asking voters to keep this in mind when casting thier votes.

I really hate to write this because your entry is so cool!

Nice entry DuncanFX, I like your imaginitive use of the guidelines and there's some good use of perspective in your entry too with the flag pole. Having a puzzle situation in the BG is definitely bonus point materiel, in my book at least.

Personally I'd yank out the worm- tie it to the golf tee, and use that as a grappling apparatus.

Well played!

I agree with Ali, I like how you changed the inactive to stand out a bit more- almost suggested the same. I'd definitely go with highlighting the active icons more too.
#152
Peachy keen entry Theo.

I played my first adventure on the NES too!

Looks good, changes work well- although I might suggest to go for something like a brain for the telekinesis, I thought that icon was listen at first:)

Aww, that completely ruins the drollness of my statement.  :P

Congrats hip hip hurrwhereismywallpaperdammit?!  :P

I'm busy - termites are assaulting my studio in full force! Little wood eating assholes ruin everything!

...33% bigger...

My 320 x 200 BG's are painted on a 'canvas' about 1000 pixels across. I reduce to 33% of the original size.
Sorry I kinda mis-explained it before.

BACKGROUND BLITZ!

Topic: The Oubliette. However, it does not have to be an underground medieval dungeon.
I will accept any confined, forgotten, little room. For instance, it could be grimy and shallow Orcish dirt pantry. Perhaps an ancient wheat silo filled with cobwebs and owl pellets.
The only visual requirement is that the sole entrance to your room must be an opening in the ceiling.
Small-medium size rooms are recommended for a true Oubliette vibe.

Rules: AGS compatible is a must. A solitary opening/entrance in the ceiling is mandatory.

Voting: Voting will commence on December 22nd.

You didn't really think I'd start an X-Mas theme Blitz did you? :D

Good round guys, and great entry Oraxon- it was a pleasure to compete with you.

And yeah, I'm never going to live down that Blackadder mention!

Here's a short story straight out of the Primordial night- enjoy!

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who have *pre-ordered a hard copy of Primordia from the website.
Your patronage is much appreciated.

* Everybody who pre-ordered will now also recieve a Primordia soundtrack CD, containing select tracks by our resident composer m0ds. I haven't had a chance to update the site for ages, so just thought I'd mention this here.

Pinback how do you get that awesome pixel look on what looks-like hi-res art?

The magic of re-sizing! I re-size in Microsoft Paint as it gives just the right look, usually a reduction of 33%. I also convert the pictures to limited palette PNG's too, so I can reduce the gradient effect of photoshop brushes, and thus achieve a very pixellated look.

It sounds like a fantastic idea. If you can get the hotspot animation feature working, to allow one to attach an animation to another- I'm sold. That idea alone would likely double my productivity, not to mention open up a huge range of posibilities for complex animations on the one sprite, without the legwork of doing them all simultaneously frame by frame- which I find extremely tedious and difficult to do with any level of complexity/dynamism.
