Messages - Problem

If you haven't played Rogue State yet, now is your chance!
It's 70% off, it has been updated once again and is more balanced and enjoyable than ever.

Don't hesitate and get the game that won some of the awards that Wadjet Eye Games wasn't nominated for!

I know you want it!

Yeah, Dualnames is doing an excellent job maintaining the game and responding to player feedback. It's a shame that this game doesn't get more attention. It's excellent and keeps getting better!

The videos still work for me on Firefox.

@Cassie: Completely off-topic, but I'm quite happy with this addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/

I have to agree, this campaign is confusing. The rewards don't even include a copy of the game. Does this mean you will release the game for free when it's done, and you just want to collect some money to fund its development? Or will it be a commercial title in the end? Will supporters have to pay twice to play the game? There's simply not enough information about what you intend to do, and what the money will be spent on. The videos also contain no information and no gameplay. Have you watched other crowdfunding campaigns? If you want to gain people's trust, you need more content and frequent updates.

I like it when people use AGS to create political simulations... :-D ;)

Looks quite interesting, so good luck with this!

This happens to me a lot. Your brain keeps working while you're asleep. So if you go to bed with an unsolved problem, chances are that you wake up with new ideas how to solve it.

I'd also like to add that OGG isn't just better because it is free, it is generally a little better than MP3. Most importantly OGG is better for seamless playback of loopable tracks. MP3 compression can introduce small gaps that you don't want when you play music in a loop. As far as I know there's no good reason why you would prefer MP3 over OGG in a game.

General Discussion / Re: The X-Files

All in all a mixed season. The first episode was by far the worst. It felt rushed and unfocused and I got the impression that it was way too short for what it wanted to tell. The last episode was also quite poor, though slightly more thrilling than the first.
The episodes in between were much better. And yeah, episode 3 stands out, easily one of the most entertaining X-Files episodes ever. So the season wasn't all great, but it had great moments and was good enough that I'd watch another. ;)

General Discussion / Re: Looking for a game

Hm, there was an adventure game called Das Telekommando and a sequel Das Telekommando kehrt zurück. It was a shareware or freeware title developed for the German Telekom. Maybe that's what you're looking for?

I must say I agree with most of Mandle's points. The demo looks and feels excellent and I really like the atmosphere and the visuals with their "dark yet cartoony" feel. But breaking the fourth wall the way it's done in the demo is really getting old and annoying and completely takes me out of the game. And that's a pity, because there's a lot to like here. I will still back this Kickstarter, and I think this could be a stellar game if you focus on its strengths. Of course it's always a fine line and impossible to please everybody. But for me, full-length games that try to be funny all the time usually fall flat (short games are a different thing). If you want me to care for the characters, then it's a good idea to play it straight from time to time.

Anyway, you still have my support and I wish you good luck with the campaign! :)

From my own experience the Greenlight rank is not important. We made it through Greenlight way before we even came close to the top 100. A good yes/no ratio seems to be important, and I guess it also helps if you have a lot of traffic in general, so keep telling everybody about your campaign. But the greenlight ranking doesn't say much by itself. And the game being free might also influence Steam's decision (not really sure if positive or negative...)

Anyway, good luck with your campaign(s). I hope you'll make it, you guys deserve it!

I'm really happy and honoured to see Rogue State nominated for 5 categories - but to be fair, there has never been a Demo for Rogue State. So I don't think we should have been nominated for the "Best Demo" category. :)

Anyway, congratulations to all nominees!

AGS Games in Production / Re: Autoblight

Thanks for the offer! We currently don't need any new voices. It's a short game (originally planned for MAGS) and it doesn't need a lot of voice acting. And since most characters are robots, our approach to voice acting is a little... different. ;)

Uh, are all the lists supposed to contain all the games? Why can you nominate commercial games for "best freeware"? Or why can you nominate full length games for "best short game" or "best demo", and regular adventure games for "best non-adventure game"? Does that make any sense?

You did a good job, CW. The features you have added to AGS are a great improvement. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be trying to maintain and update such an old engine without breaking it, and you have my biggest respect for what you have achieved. Without your work, our last game probably wouldn't even exist.
But if you feel that you can't work on AGS anymore, then by all means stop. You owe nothing to anybody, and if you don't like to do it, if it becomes a chore for you, then there's no point. Thanks for all the hard work, we really appreciate it.

We (Myinah, Sox and I) are not going to make the deadline. But we love the direction our game is taking, so we're going to spend some more time on it and finish it with all the polish it deserves.
Good luck everyone, looking forward to your entries. :)

This is pretty cool!
As far as I know, those old pseudo-3D racing games didn't scale anything at runtime. They just had the same sprite available in different sizes. So if you ever run into framerate trouble, you could just use a number of pre-scaled sprites and be even more old-school. 8-)

It depends on how far you stretch the definition of an FMV game. In my opinion, the best FMV games were the ones that were not pure FMV, but embedded FMV into the gameplay. Think Gabriel Knight 2 (Combining Traditional Point-and-Click with FMV), Tex Murphy (combining a realtime 3D gameplay with FMV) or some parts of the Myst series (puzzle/exploration game with FMV characters - Riven did a surprisingly good job for the time). With this in mind, I think FMV games can have a future, because today it's easier and cheaper than ever to produce FMV content. For some types of games, filming the characters would be more affordable than creating and animating realistic 3D models. It will be interesting to see how well this approach will work in Obduction.

But yeah, when it comes to pure FMV games in the sense of "interactive movies" that are nothing but a sequence of branching video clips... no thanks. :)
