General Discussion / Enchant Hosting
Tue 06/11/2007 13:15:25
Does anyone know how to contact Enchant Hosting, also known as Dragon Star Networks? They're not responding to their tech support e-mail.

I believe Gronagor knows those people, but I haven't seen him around either, for a long time.

Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is it correct that the SayBackground() function does not in fact play speech samples?

The present Pick of the Month does not display properly. The description text uses only the left column (above the screenshot) rather than both. Also, the screenshot link is broken.

General Discussion / hotmail annoyances
Thu 27/09/2007 08:08:45
I don't usually use hotmail except as a spam account and for such things as forum registrations and so forth... however, recently it's become too annoying even to use for that. Whenever there's a picture in a message, it doesn't get shown, instead I get a patronizing warning about how pictures may be hazardous to my health. Whenever I click a link in a mail, it doesn't pass through, instead I get a warning how clicking links may blow up my computer.

THIS IS ANNOYING! Is there any way to turn such nonsense off? Because I can't seem to find it among the twenty pages of options and settings.

Root of all Evil, a Reality-on-the-Norm game.

Today is Mika's birthday, and of course this is an excellent reason to throw a party. In a town like this, inviting all your friends is easy. There is just one thing missing...

Money. Parties can be expensive, and Mika is remarkably short on money. Still, it should be possible for an enterprising photographer to make some quick cash...

Featuring pirates, private eyes, archaeologists (well, not really), a fully functional camera, and of course a crazy homeless weirdo.

In a bit of background information, there was this big thread a few months ago about how to revive RON, and comments about the current state of the collaborative city. At a certain point I realized I was taking the negative approach by criticizing, and decided to instead take the positive approach of writing a RON game myself. Of course, I had ATOTK to complete first. September's MAGS proved to be an excellent opportunity.

I realize I'm not a RON oldbie and I certainly haven't played every RON game (or even most; there's quite a lot of them). I suppose it's possible that this game breaks continuity, or does something inappropriate to some character. That is, of course, not my intent; if something like that is wrong, please let me know and I'll update the game accordingly.

General Discussion / This pisses me off
Tue 11/09/2007 20:18:35
Okay. I just heard that the local church organization is organizing a kind of bike-a-thon (i.e. teens or tweens promise to make a day-long bike trip, and their friends, neighbors and parents will pay them a couple dollars per ten miles travelled) to raise approx $10,000 for charitable causes.

The charity? Buying plane tickets for these teens so that they can visit a prayer session in Australia. Because, you know, prayer is so much different on the other side of the world than it is here.

It really pisses me off that they dare call this charity. Just imagine the good an actual charity could do with this sheer amount of money... but instead of loving their neigbors, they're only loving themselves. It's really, really sad.

Completed Game Announcements / Pixel Hunt
Sat 01/09/2007 10:22:17

Remember back in the old days, when you were playing your favorite adventure game classic, and you couldn't get past room twenty-four because you couldn't find a freakin' one-pixel object? Remember the embitterment, the frustration, the ANGER? Remember how you felt that the author of that particular non-puzzle ruined your life, and ought to be taken out and shot at?

Well, now you can relive these thrilling moments, unleash your aggression, and generally kick ass in Pixel Hunt. Guaranteed to be the most therapeutical AGS game you've ever played, or your money back.

Download here.

I'm curious... the AGS games page has the "most popular games last week" section. Now usually the most popular game has anything between 500 and 2000 hits. This week, all of a sudden, "Bog's adventures in the underworld" has almost thirty thousand? Not that he doesn't deserve it, but is this for real? For a game released over a year ago? Without any recent comments on its game page? And without causing its server to burn down to a crisp? This number just seemed so far off that I figured there might be something wrong with the php script.

Beginners' Technical Questions / Speech
Tue 28/08/2007 22:47:39
I'm probably doing something really stupid here, but is there any particular reason why

Code: ags

SetVoiceMode (eSpeechVoiceAndText);
DisplaySpeech (EGO, "&1 Zzz...");

would fail to play EGO1.WAV from the speech.vox file?

While I don't have Vista myself, I am told that it has something called an internal games menu, and that it is quite eager to block users from playing games that aren't registered to that menu. Or something.

Is there anything I can do to older games I made to make them more accessible to Windows Vista users? I am aware that the present version of AGS does that, but I was looking for a slightly less drastic solution.

General Discussion / Music query: GDM files?
Thu 23/08/2007 17:04:36
Given the large amount of musicians and composers in this forum - does anyone have software that will read and play GDM files? I believe this is a format similar to MOD, that was originally used for some old DOS-based music developer kits.

Specifically, these files: http://crystalshard.net/zip/ELFMUSIC.ZIP

If so, I'd be really interested in a WAV or MP3 or OGG conversion if possible. Thanks!

Advanced Technical Forum / MIDI music glitch?
Sun 19/08/2007 22:38:20
I have a slight problem with some MIDI files in AGS. While they play normally, they sound rather creaky, as if played through really old speakers. If I open the same files in WinAmp, they sound normal. Also, most other MIDI files, as well as MP3/OGG/WAV, plays fine in AGS. An example of a MIDI that creaks is the opening track of Warthogs.

Does anyone recognize this problem?

Advanced Technical Forum / Minor directory bug
Sun 12/08/2007 12:08:39
I found a minor bug in 2.72 (haven't checked if it occurs in 2.8 as well) - if you place the AGS editor files in the same folder as a game, then try to open that game from that folder, it doesn't work. Perhaps this is to be expected, but instead of giving a message for that, it simply repeats the "welcome to AGS" popup box.

We've upgraded our website with prettier graphics (thanks to Fizzii), a better layout, and more stuff to look at and play with. Feel free to take a look :)

I have a question about performance in AGS.

Suppose I have 40-50 moving things on screen, that move in front of the background else but behind the GUIs. Would the fastest way to implement this be
* characters, using ignorewalkbehinds
* rawdrawimage (requiring RawRestoreScreen)
* GUI objects, using z-order to place them behind other GUIs

Advanced Technical Forum / Saved game issue
Fri 20/07/2007 08:57:13
Maybe somebody has seen a similar issue before? Apparently a user is losing saved games. Does anyone know what causes this?

Quote
When I exit the game and restart it, I lose some of my saved games from the top of the list. I'm running it on XP tablet.

I saved my game and realized that it saved over the top saved game file. I checked this by clicking restore after I saved.

To double check, I hit f5, clicked the bottom saved game, retitled my save and clicked save. I hit f7 and found that the top saved game had been erased by the saved game I had just made.

It doesn't seem able to create new saved games without deleting the last saved game.

For example, before after I posted my response my top two "saves" were:
-sharp-
-coin-

I loaded -sharp-, walked outside and saved -test-.

I exited and restarted and it seemed alright. However, I exited again, saw your post, then started and the saved game -sharp- is gone, although -test- is still there.

Does anyone know how to contact Adventuregamers.com (specifically, Gunnar Harboe)? They've not responded so far to their forum, or private messages, or their "contact" page.

They were kind enough to put up a notice of A Tale of Two Kingdoms, but for that they used the two-year-old screenshots. I'd like them to replace these with the current screenshots, but am unable to contact them.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

A Tale of Two Kingdoms is a graphical adventure in the style of the classic Sierra games. Set in the world of Celtic mythology and fairy tales, it features many sidequests and alternate endings. This release is a Deluxe Edition with a new interactive prologue, several graphic updates, and professional voice acting.

The ancient kingdom of Theylinn is beset by enemies. Within the castle walls, nobles vie for the old king's favor, and not everybody is happy with the sole heir to the throne, princess Rhiannon. Meanwhile, danger approaches, in the form of an invading army, a hostile giant, and a mercenary troop who are ancient enemies of the Theylann king...

Download from Steam, or Humble Bundle, or from Itch.io. The game is DRM-free.
