General Discussion / File hosting query
Tue 03/07/2007 12:33:23
Since this wasn't in the Useful Threads thread - can people recommend me a good hosting service for a ~80 Mb file? (specifically, an AGS game) Preferably one that's cheap or free.

I'm trying to get in touch with the site staff of adventure-eu.com, or Dimitris Manos in particular. They do not seem to respond to forum messages or PMs at the moment; does anyone have other suggestions for reaching them, such as an e-mail address?

Advanced Technical Forum / AGS editor issues
Tue 08/05/2007 17:52:39
I've on several times experienced problems with the following:

1) It is possible to define the same global function or variable in several script modules. This may cause confusion to the programmer, as the engine will pick a function he didn't expect.

2) The editor aborts without saving over several editors that aren't particularly critical. For instance, if you attempt to open a room file that isn't there. I regularly move 90% of all rooms to a temporary folder to speed up the compilation and testing process; clicking on a nonexistent room in the not automatically updating rooms list causes the editor to bail out.

Just $.2

Advanced Technical Forum / Forum bug

I'm not sure where else to post this, so here goes.

If I log in and then make a post, I get the error that "my last post was less than 20 seconds ago", assumedly because I logged in less than 20 seconds ago.

If I wait a bit and post again, i get the error that "I already posted that". Even though I didn't.

Minor quibble perhaps, but still.

I found this out at the recent MAGS contest. For some reason, games built with (what I assume is) the latest version of AGS don't work on my computer. I have no problem running older games, nor making games.

Setup mode works fine. When I start the game normally, I get a window border with no content in it (not even black, it just doesn't get drawn). If I drag the window (or move something else over it and put it away) it does get drawn, including a mouse cursor at some spot, but it doesn't seem to get a screen update ever. The game does react normally to ALT-X.

This is pretty weird. Any suggestions would be welcome. This is Windows 2000 with DirectX 8, a 1 GHz CPU and 128 Mb RAM.

Games that don't work include Cabbage Quest, Me Go Store, and Cedric and the Revolution. Games that do work include Reactor 09.

Since ATOTK is nearly complete (seriously, folks) and there have been several Linux-related threads on the forum recently, I have a question with respect to the rain and snow plugin, and Linux.

As far as I know, AGS works fine on Linux, except if you're using plugins. Does this mean the game will work except for the plugin functions, or will not work period? The former is acceptable, the latter is not. I would be interested in hearing if there are any tips or tricks that let me achieve the latter. #IFDEF maybe?

I was using the flashlight plugin too, at first, but I rewrote that using normal AGS code so that's no longer a problem. But recoding rain & snow appears to have performance issues.

Or some better title than that. Anyway, what I'd like is a function that you can pass five or six strings to, displays those strings as dialogue options (like they would if you were talking with an NPC and used the dialogue editor) and returns the number of the option the player picked. Dynamic dialogs would be cool.

Larry Lotter and the Test of Time

It's time for the final exams at Magic University, and notorious slacker Larry Lotter is about to flunk all of them because he spent less time studying and more time drinking beer. But there is yet hope! Using a spell to travel back in time, he gets the chance to do his day over again and pull some tricks to pass the exams anyway! And he has to, because it's his Destiny.

Join Rob Greasley, Calliope DeRanged and Professor Mumblemore in this short Harry Potter parody, loosely based on the greatly admired books by J.K. Rowling. Watch the other characters act and interact off their own accord, and spin time back and forth to interfere.

Now available on Steam. This is the Deluxe version with improved higher-resolution graphics, a professional voice pack, and translations into into French, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Hungarian, Dutch, Russian, and Italian. It's originally a MAGS game but it's come a long way!

Thanks to Fizzii and Meerbat for the graphics; Jan Glembotzki for the music. Voice acting by Anthony Ingruber, Conrad Pallman, Dahlia Badanowski, Jean-michel Newberg, Jesse Lowther, Kristyn Mass & Michael Malconian.

Do you want to design a game that gives the player more options?
Do you feel restricted by the Sierra-like four-button command interface?
Do you think that even the nine-button Lucasarts layout is not enough?

Then you should try the new MegaVerb GUI.

* Collapsible command bar allows for up to forty verbs and forty items
* Drag and drop to deposit the GUI in any screen corner
* Rearrange verbs and items on the GUI by dragging them around
* Use right mouse button as a shortcut for a 'default' verb
* Keyboard support both for selecting verbs and items
* Automatically generated standard responses
* Supports both 320x200 and 320x240 resolutions, tweakable for high res
* Comes with a free Cuppit

Download here (Requires AGS v2.72 RC 2a or higher)

From the twisted mind that brought you META...

Infinite Monkeys is a quirky adventure game involving elves, zombies, a chessboard, Mittens, a zoo, a flying city, a moonbase, a time machine, and numerous other odds and ends. In the midst of all this chaos, can you stop the evil villain's plans before new year?

This unique game was written for the fifth anniversary MAGS contest, that suggested you pick one out of any of the topics for the previous five years, by picking all listed topics at the same time. Hence, Infinite Monkeys follows every single rule posed in every single MAGS competition over the past five years. It also features an innovative interface that steps away from the low amount of verbs in adventure games, and of course monkeys!

Featuring a futuristic past with zombies, a flying city, elves, Mittens, a zoo, a supervillain, and time travel. If that didn't make sense to you, you must definitely play this game to find out.

(I would have posted this in the recruitment thread except that this is not about an adventure game, and the games in question are already complete)

I'm looking for a sprite artist who is willing to touch up, clean up and otherwise improve the sprite sheet of two existing games, one puzzle game and one strategy game. The sheets in question consist of about a hundred sprites of around 32x32 pixels, none of which are animated, and most of which require only minor changes. Some of the sprites can be redrawn from scratch if you feel like it, but this isn't necessary. Help would be greatly appreciated.

The Rules (tm)
* This is a quiz about adventure gaming trivia. Each installment has about a dozen questions with a common theme, about well-known adventure games, either classics or from the more famous "indie" games. Suggested themes include but are not limited to inventory items, music, easter eggs or forest creatures.
* Each question is worth two points if correct, one for a partial answer, and three if you have a better answer than the person who made up the question.
* This thread is for hints and feedback, as well as noting your participation. Please send answers by PM to prevent people from peeking. The quizmaster will post all answers when the quiz ends.
* As with most activities, the winner of this quiz will be the quizmaster of the next one. In case of a tie, the person who submitted earlier is considered the winner.
* I'm setting a deadline of a week, then give me a few days to look over all answers, and give the winner a few days to come up with something new. The result should be a biweekly quiz, or thereabouts.

Okay, a simple Quizzening... tell me from which game the following quotes are...
All are for classic Sierra or Lucasarts games, with a slight majority of Lucas quotes since there's much more spoken text in them. And most of the quotes occur near the beginning of the game.

1. He who would seek the key to this door will undoubtedly make a splash.
2. Hiden goseke.
3. How am I supposed to take over the world if I'm on a budget?
4. How are you going to find the statue in all this junk?
5. I'm selling these fine leather jackets.
6. I'm sick of making up stupid stories! ( -- then make up stories that aren't stupid! )
7. Ken sent me.
8. Last leaf of the year.
9. See ya!
10. The wisdom of the Elders may not be questioned. That is the final Rule of Membership.
11. You must be mistaking me for somebody else, I am not a farmer.
12. Z jo jb! Lvoo sd fj?

As discussed here and here, there seems to be sufficient interest in having a Trivia Quiz. Hence, I'm going to post some questions to get people going.

This week's Quizzening: Sidekick Special
I'm naming twelve sidekicks (and I use the term loosely, although they all more-or-less help you during a game) and twelve attributes. Match each sidekick to the corresponding attribute, and to the game it appears in.

Example: Cedric -- you have to rescue him twice but he never helps you -- KQV

The sidekicks:
1.Charlie
2.Hetchell
3.Jake
4.Keith
5.Marty
6.Roget
7.Participle
8.Spike
9.Sushi
10.Ted
11.Trottier
12.Xavi

The attributes:
A.Always wrapped up
B.Bedside companion
C.Chain smoker
D.Green-skinned
E.Found among trash
F.Hard of hearing
G.Just hangs around
H.Long lost sibling
I.Old foster parent
J.Partner who lets you do all the work
K.Purple-skinned
L.Scared scholar

Well, we've just had a quizzening about character names in adventure games. It seems there is some interest for a contest about adventure gaming trivia.

If people like the idea, I would propose that this be held biweekly in the contest forum, with about 10-15 questions each time, preferably with a common theme, and the winner of each gets to hold the next contest (just like with most other contests).

Just for the fun of it, of course, but feel free to make pixelated awards for people.

It may be best if people use PMs to answer it, and use the contest thread for hints/feedback/etc. Then the one who designed it should post everybody's responses when time's up.

What I used last time is one point for a partial answer, two points for a full answer, and three points for an answer that's actually better than the questioner had in mind.

Good idea? Bad idea? Feedback please? Or should Anym (who won the first one) just start a new thread for the next round?

As mentioned in another thread, many people don't know many of the names used in adventure gaming. Hence, this pop quiz. Please wrap your answers in [ hide ] tags so as not to spoil it for others (or, if you want, PM them to me). And note that while I can't stop you, replaying the games now to get the names is cheating. If you think this isn't possible, hey, I'm working from memory too :)

Be as precise as possible. I won't argue over spelling errors (well, except for one, maybe), but if a character has a last name please include it as well or the answer won't count. Several characters have a nickname, but we're looking for their real names!

Prize? Ah, I'll think of something. Btw moderators, feel free to move this to the 'activities' forum if you want (but if you do, I'll create a new quiz in a week or two :) )

WHAT is your name...
From Maniac Mansion... (1) the female singer. (2) the publisher from the infomercial. And (3) the car.

From Zak McKracken... (1) the phone company. (2) the coeds. (3) the evil aliens.

From LOOM... (1) the protagonist. (2) the guildmaster of the glassblowers. (3) the young blacksmith.

From Monkey Island... (1) the sword master. (2) the sheriff of Melee town. (3) the cartographer of Scabb.

From Indiana Jones... (1) the protagonist. (2) the nazi professor. (3) the last king of Atlantis.

From King's Quest... (1) the previous king of Daventry. (2) the shopkeeper's dog. (3) Crown Isle's captain of the guard.

From Space Quest... (1) the Sarien battleship. (2) the owner of ScumSoft. (3) the planet with the female battlebot.

From Police Quest... (1) the guy with a flower tattooed on his nipple. (2) your first partner in the homicide division. (3) the sleazy cafe next to the coffee house.

From Larry... (1) the girl at the elevator. (2) the evil professor. (3) your divorce lawyer.

From Quest for Glory... (1) the centaur girl. (2) the Shapeir apothecary. (3) the Simbani's chief's son.

And if it wasn't obscure enough yet, a few bonus questions... (1) the bad guys from Future Wars. (2) Hugo's girlfriend. (3) the blue gobliin. (4) the prophetic pig. And (5) the priestess that gets turned to stone.

Enjoy!

With over seven hundred AGS games uploaded to the games page, it is not particularly easy for people to find the kind of games they love to play. Not everybody has the time to download dozens of games and see which they like best. Hence, I would suggest a couple of additions. Feedback is welcome, please!

At the top, add a field for genre. A pull-down box lets the game author select e.g. fantasy, contemporary, science fiction, mystery, parody, and some other options. This can (obviously) be searched on.

The user ratings have the problem that they're often comparing apples to oranges. For instance, you can't plausibly compare the graphics used in Larry Vales to those used in Cirque de Zale. Hence, I would suggest a few extra fields that the author can set (but only once). These can also be searched on.

The graphics are (simple / cartoonish / realistic) (set by author) and within that style are (abysmal / poor/ average / good / excellent) (set by voters, like they are now).
The plot and immersion are (serious / humoristic / n/a) (set by author) and within that style are (abysmal / poor/ average / good / excellent) (set by voters, like they are now).
The puzzles are (easy / difficult / n/a) (set by author) and within that style are (abysmal / poor/ average / good / excellent) (set by voters, like they are now).

Overall enjoyment is still a regular vote. Comments work as before. For older games, I'm sure the AGS community has a couple of oldbies who can decide which categories they fall in (it's generally pretty obvious).

Additional voting option #1: the game's originality is (cliche or strict remake / poor / average / original / one-of-a-kind)

Additional voting option #2: You would enjoy this game if you liked... (insert name of game). Each voter can add one game, and the three most-chosen options are listed. Home of the Underdogs also does this, and it works great.

Additional voting option #3: per Chris's earlier comments of abuse, any vote of 100% or 0% is summarily ignored. Nobody who has a carefully weighed opinion should consider any game that bad or that good.

Additional searching option #1: some people are more interested in hearing an expert opinion than an average of every random n00b who happened to come in and vote. Hence, people viewing the page should be able to choose between "average opinion" or "expert opinion", the latter being the average of only expert users. A reasonable definition of 'expert' in this context would be "anyone who voted on 50+ games"

Additional searching option #2: it seems reasonable that if there are people who voted on a lot of games, a viewer will find one whose opinion he generally relies on. Thus, for any expert user (as defined above), viewers can also see a list of all ratings by that person.

Example (new things in italic]):
Quote
Game: Monkey Island II
Genre: Pirate
Author:   Ron Gilbert
Resolution:   320x200 at 8-bit (256 col)
Downloaded:   0 times (buy it from ebay, you pirate!)
Download size:   n/a
Category:   Full length games

User ratings:   (select: AVERAGE ratings - expert ratings)
The graphics are realistic and within that style are rated 85%
The plot is humorous and within that style is rated 70%
The puzzles are difficult and within that style are rated 90%
Originality: 60%
Overall enjoyment: 95%

You would probably enjoy this game if you liked... Monkey Island I, FOTAQ, Cirque de Zale

Two speech-related feature requests...

1.It would be nice if the game paused during displayspeech the way it does during regular displaytext (at least, when using Sierra-style speech rather than Lucas-style). Or a toggle for this to preserve backwards compat.

2.I have several portraits in the game that face sideways rather than forward. As AGS works, these are alternately displayed on the left and on the right. It would be nice if all portraits displayed on the left are automatically mirrored, so that the portraits always look to the center of the screen (or to each other)

If it's not too much trouble, of course. Thx!
#198
Is it possible to set the speed at which a character's portrait animates when speaking? At a guess, this would be the same as the character's regular animation speed. I would like to be able to separate the two.

Agagames has a walkthrough site (linked from the forums here)... I went to the login form to be able to add a walkthrough (that would be here). But when I fill in the form and click send, I get an error message stating I should fill in all the fields. Which, of course, I just did. Anyone know what's up?

From the AGS resources page, the link to juncmodule.com/cms/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=10 is no loner functional. Anyone know where it went?
