General Discussion / Re: Writing in Videogames
Wed 07/03/2012 17:25:53
(1) depends heavily on the genre. For example, an adventure game does need a decent plot, whereas an action game can do without.

(2) poor plot and good gameplay is better than the inverse. If I want good plot and poor gameplay, I'll go watch a movie instead. For example, I will quickly abandon a game if the controls are poor.

(3) yes, but I can't think of any good examples right now. Mostly indie-made games that simply fail to do anything that catches my attention in the first 5 or 10 minutes; since they weren't catching, that also explains why I don't remember what they're named.

(4) the inconsistency annoying

(5) absolutely not. There are numerous old games with very good narratives, such as Chrono Trigger and Planescape Torment.

(6) yes; see question 1.

I think I might have mistakenly voted twice :/

Hm, that's a point. How vulnerable is this system to repeat voting? If this month gets a lot more votes than we normally do, then there's probably something wrong here.

Hey, you got a vote site running. That's cool!

I THINK it has something to do with an animation being played while there is a room change/change of time.

Random AGS tidbit: if you make an AnimateCharacter call that is blocking, and the character is not in the current room, the game may hang. This may or may not be your problem here but it sounded familiar.

Radiant, here are some answers. I won't be fixing anything non-critical or doing any changes anymore, as the MAGS deadline has passed, so that would be cheating.

Sure, but you could always consider an update when the MAGS voting is done.

AGS Games in Production / Re: AGS Coliseum

I've read in another thread that you plan to release this on Steam. However, I have not given you permission to make money using Crystal Shard characters from a freeware game. If you intend to go commercial with AGS Colosseum then I must request that you remove all content related to A Tale Of Two Kingdoms from your game.

Which maybe going on Steam when it's finished latter this year from my last conversation.

Hold it.

I've been looking forward to try this. Mua ha ha!

(edit) okay, looks like fun. Some first play comments,
Spoiler

The 'start game' gui is still clickable if you have the 'options/load' gui popped up.

"Press space to continue" - I would like to click to continue since I'm using the mouse.

What's the difference between "last year" and "previous year"?

F.S.B is lacking a dot

"Show info of selected person" - I'd prefer clicking on a name to see info, rather than clicking on a name and then clicking on the "show info" button

When building/researching something, I would like having an estimate of how many days it's going to take.

I'd like to have the option to pause time directly from the "news" popup.

It would be nice if the missions screen would show how many unassigned agents I have.

I've made a submission.

On the submission screen, I think the box for "description" is too small, and it would probably help if language was a couple of pulldown menus or checkboxes.
For adult content, I believe that nudity and sexual content is basically the same thing, and the third one should instead be a dropdown for violence. At least, that's the rating system bigbluecup also uses.
Finally, can we have a preview screen?

Good luck with this!

We've got all voices done except for Florent's, and a German and French translation are coming up. Stay tuned!

13. Just touching a first aid kit heals you, you don't actually have to use the stuff inside.

For that matter, just touching food heals you, you don't actually have to do anything else with it. If you got cut up with a few swords and axes, then merely being close to a chicken nugget will remove your wounds!

For the Quasar Voice Pack I would like to have someone versed in editing sound files take a quick look at the samples used, and where needed clean up static and equalize the volume. Please PM me if you can help out, thanks!

I live near Amsterdam, which is very openminded about homosexuality as well as about sex in general. The basic attitude is that what two consenting adults do in their bedroom is their business, and not yours.

As for voting, I hope votes via PM isn't permanent, but I can't think of any alternative (for the short term anyway).

What is wrong with the MAGS site anyway, and why haven't people put up a mirror site yet? It's not like mirroring is hard these days.
