I think that third-party software, changes to your hardware, of microsoft's servers being temporarily unreachable can all cause your installed version to register as "illegal".

I think before doing anything like the 'penis award' you should really consider the morality of a group of 20-somethings ridiculing a 14 year old kid on the internet like that.

The reason the P3n1s was discontinued was not a 14-year-old kid :P

Anyway, a good answer imho would be to only let people nominate themselves for the P3n1s award. Then we can all go vote for Me Go Store or something like that.

Quote from: Cirius on Wed 03/11/2010 08:22:24Personally, I still work with 2.72.
Me too, albeit not for the interaction editor. I simply find the interface more accessible, plus it has better Linux support.

Anyway, in reaction to the OP, note that text adventures still have a thriving community, so I see no reason why graphical ones would die.

Telltale brought it back from dead... Actually maybe AGS brought it back from dead - who knows?
Both of then Singlehandedly Revived The Genre, did they not? :D

Okay, I don't have patience for the first one, but the music is obviously

An Der Schoenen Blauen Donau, by Strauss.

Of course, your asking for the second and third letters makes this confusing: do you call it like that, or call it "Schoenen Blauen Donau", or call it "The Blue Danube", or "Blue Danube" or "Danube Waltz"? In each case, I'm going to end up with different letters.

Mr. C then wins $10000 in the lottery. Which is the most reasonable outcome?

(1) Mr. C shares this money with Mr. A and Mr.B
(2) Mr. C goes on a nice long holiday
(3) Mr. C donates all the money to charity
(4) Mr. C opens a competing shoe store.

(Or, btw, the actual fact of the law that if you buy a CD, you CAN'T make it into an mp3 for use in your ipod (if you want to stay legal)).
This depends heavily on which country you're living in, of course.

The money you would invest in either developing a DRM system yourself, or licensing one from the big companies, would be significantly less than the money you would lose from piracy.

Do not forget the BTO problem (which stands for "Better Than Original"). If for whatever reason your copy protection is annoying, because e.g. it asks for passwords all the time, then a pirated version is going to be Better Than the Original in that it does not repeatedly bug you for passwords. This is a big incentive for people to either pirate your stuff, or stop using it.

I would definitely play this.

It's annoying.

A standard gameplay feature in adventure games is to pick up everything just in case you'll need it later, and you need a very good excuse for not doing this. Arbitrarily disallowing the character from picking up obvious items will likely bother many players on their first playthrough.

Okay,

  • For what it's worth, I've also got a mirror of HOIK at http://crystalshard.net/index.php?p=8&s=74
  • To my best knowledge, no video trailers have ever been made for any of the games mentioned. There certainly aren't any for Heroine's Quest or Quest for Yrolg. Overall it is pretty rare for any fangame to release a video trailer in the first place, and most of these projects predate the wide availability of internet video.
  • To my best knowledge, no demos have ever been created for Project Katrina or QfI. I believe a demo for Nightfall and SFLAH exists, but has only been available to their respective development teams.
  • IA is active on these forums, so they should be able to answer your questions. As far as I know, QfI has been put on indefinite hold because IA is working on several other games instead, most notably SQ2.
  • And, of course, if you have questions about Yrolg, Glorious Quest, or Heroine's Quest - shoot.
  • And come on, it's spelled "Youtube".

Gee thanks, I'll file that under 'pointless snidey comments'
Aw come on, if you ask "do you play X", then you should expect some people to respond "no I don't"  ::)

Best Documentation always struck me as rather redundant, since only a handful are usually fit to qualify. It's also a little arbitrary. Is the best documentation one that's slickly produced, or one that explains the objectives of the game in a clear and concise way (something you can accomplish with a plain text file)?
I don't think "best documentation" is any more or any less arbitrary than the other awards.

For instance, suppose there's a game with artsy black-and-white graphics. Some people may want to give this the "best graphics" award for the stylistic choice and artistic impressionism. Other people may think that it doesn't qualify because it's only two colors. Both are valid opinions, and that's why the award is decided by vote count, and not by arbitrarily declaring that one of those sides is "right". Same goes for best documentation.

Nope :) I played it for half an hour, then I got bored with it and went back to game design.

Ah, you mean bringing back the P3n1s award? :P
