It seems you missed the irony there. Oh well.

Excellent, thank you!

It's probably the Basic CHAIN command that fails. If I recall correctly, it does a COMMON memory share so that it can keep the game state between the three other executables; the other executables will abort unless a certain variable is initialized in this shared memory. This setup was done because the game was too big to fit in QB's memory otherwise, back when nobody had heard of the term "gigabyte"...

It's definitely worth finding someone who excels in the skills that you lack.

While having a good teammate is great, the only real way you can find out if you match is by attempting to work together for awhile.

So, if you pick up the phone booth, will you die?

http://crystalshard.net/test/ELEMENT.ZIP

The .RUN file is actually BASRUN.EXE, and the .OVL files are actually executables called by the main one, ELEMENT.EXE. It's a text adventure with CGA graphics.

I would appreciate your help in getting this to run.

General Discussion / "Error in EXE file"
Sat 21/08/2010 23:15:00
Well... I found this really old game I wrote on an old CD. It's written in QuickBasic 2.0, if I recall correctly, and compiled to a DOS executable requiring BASRUN. Out of nostalgia, I tried playing it again.

However, when I try to run it, it tells me "Error in EXE file", and aborts. It doesn't work in DosBox either.

Is there anyone here to whom this sounds familiar and that might be able to get the EXE to run? Thanks!

Nice game; I'd say it would be really improved by some fitting background music.

What was your previous theme, anyway?

The easiest solution is to use the wishing well, or get rid of the pooka with some cider or the cold iron rune.

I noticed you don't use the mouse. Why?
I find the game easier to control with two hands on the keyboard. There's a reason why it supports several different control methods :)

And in today's lesson, we learn that avoiding the Claw Of Doom is all fine and dandy, but that thing also has a friggin' laser beam. D'oh!

(a) becomes problematic if the character has been around for a long time and especially if he also appears in games made by other people.

(b) has the obvious problem that it's not always possible to tell objectively whether something was done for story reasons or for shock reasons.

In cooperative stories, any big change to an established character is potentially going to cause strife and dissent, and you can't hope to prevent that by writing down a handful of neat rules or exceptions.

Death is just the biggest example; I would likewise expect mixed reactions if some new game declared that some well-established character is now married, or converted to some overly strict religion, or revealed to have been an alien all along. I'm not saying that any of these are necessarily bad, but it should be obvious that they're all potentially problematic.

Will you ever try and implement the TCP/IP module to support online play? ::)
I'll consider it for some unspecified point in the future.

Okay, and another round of bugfixing, which I hope is the last one.

"Infinite loop" bug in demo saving fixed.
Added extra safeguards for sine array out of bound.
Added strafing option in rotational keyboard mode.

If you have any nice demo files, please post them!
