I'll probably have something before the end of the month.

How far did you get with that project?  I'm curious.

This far. The physics engine tends to break down if balls cluster together, due to any number of boundary conditions.

Splitscreen is what I miss in alot of  modern games these days. Most are either singleplay or only have online mp, which is quite a shame. Games like GRID would be so much more fun with splitscreen play, but for some reason they haven't included it.

Like this?

The Colonel's Bequest did the whole Agatha Christie thing much better so many years before
Hm, the impression I got from TCB is wondering why I should care about all these people with their convoluted relations considering pretty much all of them die and there's nothing you can do about that...

X is blackmailing Y, but then they get killed for unrelated reasons. A has a secret relationship with B, but now they're both dead. That doesn't really make the characters feel relevant, to me.

I tried writing The Incredible Machine in AGS. Wow, that's tricky.

When you say the original/EGA version are you referring to this?
http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/564775-quest-for-glory-i-so-you-want-to-be-a-hero/images

Yes. There are, essentially, four graphic standards for Sierra games. This is the second one, called SCI0, running on EGA 320x200 in 16 colors. The first one (which you call KQ1 original/KQ2 graphics, the official name is AGI) is approx 160x180, double-width pixels; it uses certain tweaks in CGA to give 16 colors on most monitors, rather than EGA.

Left: AGI. Right: SCI0.

(the third, SCI1, uses VGA graphics in 320x200, and the fourth, SCI2, uses high color in 640x480)

Anyway, back on topic, I would recommend the original, because it catchs its own atmosphere better.

Euterpe.

It's probably taken, though.

What people need to do is create a game that is similar to a certain IP (like Kings Quest) but change the names of all the characters, locations, title, etc...so the owner of the IP doesnt shut you down...

Um, yeah. The problem is that the concept of "IP" goes a bit farther than just the names, so if you write a game about King Maharg of Yrtnevad, Activision is still well within their rights to shut you down.

Perhaps, I'm biased but...

Chrono Trigger > Everything else  :=

Two words: Planescape Torment.

That said, Shining Force was pretty well done. Good graphics and music, particularly!

For KQ-related games...if they'd end up buying the IP (not merely a commercial license) they would also obtain ownership of the KQ remakes and the ability to shut down other KQ-related fangames...but I don't think there's a great deal of those left in existence.

Really? I spot two of them just on the first page of this very forum.

Not that I'd expect the Phoenix people to want to shut down anyone else, that would be highly ironic.  ::)
#2252
Well, they are certainly worthy of the name "Phoenix" now...

Just thought I'd add these images.  These pictures were created by one of the guys from Infamous Adventures.  See if you can recognise what games he re-created.
(1), (2) and (5): QFG4. (3) is rather obviously SQ4, and (4) is KQ6.

The hilarious thing about Gilbert's AGI mockup is that apparantly, there is a puzzle which is solved by throwing a shuriken at the side of a road in the middle of nowhere
Perhaps it's a Street Fighter in-joke (you know, because it's a pic of a street  ;D) and he meant to throw a shoryuken?

@Radiant: Thanks for the input. Is that prototype already playable?
If I'd put together an actual level, then yes.

An average-length game would take me about a month to make, although with sufficient spare time it could be done in slightly over a week. A full-length game takes approx two years, I'd say.

S'Sirthe?
Theria?
#2257
Done.

I've got some plans and prototype for a Metroid game in AGS, but I don't think I'll get around to that any time soon. Still, I'd love to see some good platformers being developed for it.
#2258
Hm, those are good points. Let me think on this for a bit.

just quickly what did you use to compile and debug it?
Visual C++ with DirectX.

Thank you!

I tried it just for a few minutes since I didn't have much time now, but already I have some comments:
Hm, I'll look into that. The different art styles are the result of employing various artists, though.

Quote* When I quit the game it crashes (to reproduce: start new game in one player, accept all default, then abort game and quit)...
That works fine for me. What windows version and directX version do you have?

For the past several years, I've been working on a strategy game called Leylines. This even predates ATOTK, but it's had a few breaks in development; this is one of those projects that seem to last forever, but now it's finally getting close. It's turn-based and fantasy-themed, and quite extensive. With over 150 units and 90 spells, there's a lot of strategy to be explored. Several artists have contributed background art and hero portraits, as well as a catchy soundtrack.

There's seven playable races with unique buildings, units, and flavor text; from the stoic Dwarves with their trained spiders, to the enigmatic shapeshifting Theria. And there's terrain to take into account, like poisonous swamps, lakes that freeze during winter, and undead troops that cannot cross running water.

So anyway. I realize this is quite a different genre than adventure gaming; nevertheless there is a whole forum here of creative and artistic people. So if this sounds interesting, give it a shot and tell me what you think, or what to improve, or other feedback.

It's not written in AGS, which is why I'm posting in this board rather than GIP; I used C++ since I didn't know AGS back when I started this. It runs under Windows, and a Linux build is under construction. The game is freeware, and should easily run on older systems.
