You can turn this behavior off if you know how, but you'd need to visit several config menus to succesfully do so.

Word has the habit of e.g. changing regular quotes into smart quotes, and so forth. This easily yields symbols AGS doesn't handle.

Does it strike anyone as ironic that before the elections, the major parties spend almost a full year campaigning, putting up their best face for the populace, and making a complete media circus out of everything?

This means, apparently, that 20% to 25% of the time, this takes precedence to actually running the country.

Ok. So then let me start this project. First off let me explain a few details about the engine. Number one, I dont have a name for it. I was thinking of calling it one of the following names as in dedication to Chris and this community for the wonderful work done on AGS and its games:

I would call it something funky multi-dimensional, like Tesseract.

I guess, but is it really a good form to crap all over a community that obviously loves her work, and creates fantastical little fan stories?

To be fair, if you look over the fanfiction.org site, not all those little fan stories qualify as "fantastical".

In particular, there has been a lot of speculation on the internet over who should become Harry's girlfriend (Hermione, Ginny, Luna, or even Draco) including hundreds of "shipping" stories that pair him off with one of the above, and vicious flame wars between the believers in different match-ups. When the matter became resolved in one of the later books, some fans were angry, or in denial about it, and rumor has it that one of them threatened JK to change her book. At any rate, JK has become aware of this fan behavior and found it startling. This, incidentally, is why book seven has an epilogue that seriously puts these matters to a rest with little room for speculation.

Not that she's about to stop those little fan stories, or that she could if she wanted to (I think the last group to try that was TSR, and we all know how that turned out) but she's had a few bad experiences and I can imagine she doesn't want people selling those stories. This is hardly the first lawsuit, even; there's been one against the Tanja Grotter novels, and one from some earlier author who alleges JK ripped her off. Ah, there's no business like show business.

Scientist: Well, Homer, I guess you're the winner by default.

Homer: Default?  Woo hoo!  The two sweetest words in the English language: de-fault!  De-fault!  De-fault!

[assistant clubs him]

Seriously though, it was a good game, and congratulations!

The biggest political event for the last 4 years is happening in November,

Psah. Talk about hybris. The China olympic games and its Tibet controversy, as well as the present Zimbabwe situation, are presently way more important than that mudslinging circus you call an election. America is not nearly as important to the rest of the world as it thinks it is.  Although with a bowl of popcorn, the continual flaming can be fun to watch.

I'm reasonably sure the democrats have ruined their chances by now through their vicious infighting. That may be for the best, however, as with the present economical crisis, the next president will probably have to make too many harsh decisions to stay popular for long.

I would be interested in checking it out, but because there are several 3-d libraries available for free on the web, I would not be willing to pay for it.

Hm, I would like to revisit Paris as well for a few days. Mind if I join you guys? I'll see if I can get the days off from work.

Things like this is why I make daily backups. Not that AGS has ever failed on me like that, but I'm not taking the chance.

Here's a general suggestion: create a file called "backup.bat" in notepad, then put it in the "startup items" folder in your start menu.

Code: ags

@echo off
c:
cd \backup
del backup3.arj
ren backup2.arj backup3.arj
ren backup1.arj backup2.arj
arj a backup1.zip c:\my_game\*.* -r

(substituting your favorite archiving program for ARJ as necessary).

I actually tried to re-create The Incredible Machine in AGS, and it's harder than it sounds. But certainly possible; all of it is just basic math.

Well, I must say that I sincerely appreciate having a Linux version available for the games I've written.

Note how the vast majority of AGS games use neither video playback nor plugins, so that shouldn't be too high a priority. Also, there's a large amount of modules these days, and most plugins can be replaced by some clever scripting. And don't Linux executables work on other Linux versions as well, by default?

So I'd say, keep up the good work.

Thanks for the tips!

Snake, I'll be there around June 14th - June 21st. Hard Rock cafe sounds like fun.

From a technical standpoint, has anyone tried converting their AGS game to SCUMM C and what challenges lie ahead for somebody willing to try?

It's not that hard to write AGS code that compiles in regular C, or C++ for that matter. It depends on how diverse SCUMM C is.

Gobliiins.

Loom.

Could someone who downloaded it enlighten me why this game is so large? :) I assume the 2 gig download is compressed? Room graphics couldn't possibly account for that size, and frankly music probably wouldn't do that either; so does it have intro movies? 3-d scenes? A complete voice pack for every line?

I'm afraid my German isn't solid enough to complete an adventure game in, so I'll defer my download until the English translation is complete.

One other way of doing it is by creating a large character that Follows the small/fast character Exactly, and is placed on top of it. If it's simply a big white square, you can click on it; and if you set its transparency to 100%, you won't actually see it.

Or C++, C#, PHP, or Javascript. One big happy braced family :)

What "important notifications" are you receiving? I'm not sure what one is.

Yep, same as with Gilbot, I received a notice over 3.01 (which I already knew about since I read it in the forums :P ). However, my notification was turned off. Perhaps this functionality was simply never used in the past?
