Nasty? Since when does avoiding a certain type of person make you Hitler-cum-Stalin?

I said "nastiest people I know". I'm happy to inform you that I don't know any Hitler-cum-Stalin people.

Uh..I do not totally agree with that. Unless you have a HDD with huge cache, RAM is a lot better than just swap space. But on the other hand, swap space can make a difference...

I'm aware that RAM is better, of course. But it turns out that many applications that list a minimum amount of RAM required can be run with significantly less than that, if you create generous amounts of swap on your hard drive.

Of course, this assumes you don't have too much junk in your system tray, and aren't multitasking overly much.

1.4 GHz Athlon with 128 Mb RAM. RAM turns out to be not all that important if you set up big enough swap space.

I tend to use 1024x768 resolution, although I can go higher if need be.

I used to do everything on a 350 MHz box, even. I've never found an AGS game that wouldn't run on that, although KQIX didn't.

I know the obvious answer is "if you charge for it" but what makes a game worth paying money for? What aspects do you look at when determining whether to buy a game or not?

Amount of play time.

By which I mean true play time, and not artificially lengthened play time through e.g. excessive mazes or boring cut scenes or anything, and not counting award medals you get for outrageous or ridiculous deeds on the XBox / Wii.

Since it is practically impossible to get a decent amount of play time without some sort of replay value, this by definition rules out nearly every adventure game. For me, at least. Games I'd be interested in buying would be either strategy games with lots of maps, puzzle games with lots of levels, or (very rarely) large sandboxy metroidvanias.

I would like to point out that it is easier to spread a free game than it is to spread a commercial one.

Why use CDs when you can buy downloadable stuff online?

As for his apartment, this is the first I've seen or heard any reference to where Sonny lives - there's none in the game to my knowledge.

Now that you mention it, that IS rather odd, is it not? Especially in the first game, where you can drive all across Lytton, except that your own house is unlisted.

I know a guy who's the nicest, gentlest person you'll ever meet.

...

Once, he went in for a haircut, and upon discovering the barber was gay, ran out without looking back.

Actually, if this is the nicest person whom you'll ever met, I wonder what kind of person you normally meet. This would rank among the nastiest people I know, and I know quite a lot of people.

Okay, I got a little further this time. It's a definite improvement, and everything is visible now.

The concept of the game is nice, but it needs some polishing. What I'm playing here feels more like a public beta than like a finished game.

Issues:
* You can't skip the intro (the part where you zoom in on the door) by pressing escape.
* Likewise, you can't skip through the dialog (with the dragon) - you can't even use enter to skip to the next line. If this were an adventure game, I would immediately stop playing upon noticing that.
* Gamma settings reset at game over; they should be stored in the config.
* The bridge scenes are too random - it is possible for two fireballs to launch simultaneously, which is an instant kill. Furthermore, if you are on the left side of the screen, you can't see the fireballs coming early enough to react. And yet furthermore, collision detection is too wide; you can die for simply being near a fireball.
* I find the rooms a decent challenge so far, but lose all my lives to the bridge scenes. Imho the game would be better with more rooms and less bridges; incidentally, most castles in real life have more rooms than they have bridges.
* Sound effects would be nice.
* In the third room, if you below a treasure-with-spike, you will pick up the treasure and ignore the spike.

That's another thing that pisses me off. All this 'Happy Holidays', and 'African American' crap.
It's 'Christmas' and 'Black'.
And don't even get me started on "S.O."

Neither.

You draw a separate picture that shows the layers in colors (e.g. make the entire front layer white, the middle layer red, the 3/4ths layer green, etc). It's called the walkbehind.

This may be surprising, but I would actually miss them...

They're the most convenient way of arranging an array of predefined messages.

I'm still looking for King's Quest 3: Manannan's Adventure

and would also be interested in locating Maniac Jackson.

Thanks!

So what happens if you have a game with extensive GMs and you transfer it to 3.0?

actually, I can't remember a single game in which someone was married...

King Graham is married. So are Guybrush Threepwood and, Sonny Bonds. Even Larry Laffer is married at least twice, albeit not for very long, and Roger Wilco will apparently marry Beatrice in SQXII.

I don't really use such lines anyway, as they tend not to work. Perhaps they did work in the distant past, I wouldn't know, but contemporary girls have gotten wise to the fact that they're stupid cliches.

The worst I've heard in actual use was "Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?" That earned the guy a severe frown and nothing else.

Considering the sheer amount of changes you're already making, I'd suggest you go all the way and sever all ties with the Sierra series, call it "Cop Quest" or something, and use your own story.

Just my $.2, of course. But if the work is that much your own, why not make it fully your own?
