If you're using Windows XP you could make the XP user account a limited account which would prevent installations altogether.

That doesn't actually prevent websurfing, which was the point.

Ah, this thread is full of helpful advice, and adviceful help.

Dasjoe, very interesting. How would I go about doing that?

The technical answer is, you edit C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and at the bottom add such lines as
Code: ags

127.0.0.1       ad.doubleclick.net

Depending on your system, it may be necessary to close and re-open your browser, or even reboot your computer, after saving that. This will block one of those many many advertising sites. The advantage is that trying to look at the site will give a 404 page not found error.

The practical answer is, you don't. The reason is, you're doing what is known as "enumerating badness" - i.e. this approach would only work if you had a list of every single porn site in the world, and added that to your hosts file. This is, to but it mildly, impossible. A google search for "sex" turns up approximately 700 million sites, and while I haven't checked all of those :P a good bet is that the majority of them is porn.

A better way would be to get one of the several "content blockers" (generally these filter pages for certain keywords, and refuse to display the page. The disadvantage is that this generally gives a "this page has been blocked!!1!" warning.

As with the above, this doesn't actually have a 100% success rate, and it has the added problem of getting a serious amount of false positives. For instance, you might not be able to visit a site referring to the "presidential couple" (since, you know, couple means sex), nor to see sites about roosters, or people named Richard.

Fair enough, thanks!

Out of curiosity, what's the Chembot special ability?

Random trivia note: "chem" is Egyptian for "black". Surprisingly, chembot is actually pink :)

So supposedly chembot makes black paint. Or causes explosions that blacken things.

I should hope we have enough free will to make life non-scripted, yes.

I hear AGS 3.0 slices and dices, but can it julien fries?

Yes. It can also fry juliennes, cook your coffee, boil your cake, and do the dishes afterwards.

Seriously, why would you want to pay for a game developing toolkit, given the plethora of free toolkits out there? I don't recall seeing any TGF games that were all that impressive, actually. I'd recommend you take a look at the older, free versions thereof, or Game Maker, or of course AGS (which is also surprisingly good at non-adventure games).

As for plot, I'm at a loss on this one.  But hell, Tetris didn't have a plot, did it?  Unless it was a furniture removals lorry loading sim, and I skipped the intro.

Yes it did :)

As long as the specific anime is only published in japan and is only copyrighted there,

Copyright doesn't work that way. It is automatic, not something you have to register for.

Anyway, so the story of Death Note actually ends? When I stopped reading it it was jumping from convoluted subplot to other convoluted subplot with two people going Xanatos to outwit one another... it didn't seem to have a goal in the series per se (and then I saw a later bit of plot which had another kira and another Shinigami...)
#2932
It's originally a manga, which would be available in any decent comic store.

That is to say, the comic version goes a lot further than the movie version.

I don't really like the style myself (it's too much of a Xanatos Roulette) but it is admittedly very well written.

It looks good, but what does "tracker" do?

Also, I think it needs a more aristocratic synonym for menu. My thesaurus turns up "pabulum", how's that? :)

(oh yeah, and please add keyboard shortcuts!)

(you can have M,P,U,T,E,C activate the buttons, 1-5 activate the items, and - = besides the numbers activate the scroll buttons)

Yes, the one next to the painting. The message you're getting suggests you're not actually clicking on it, but beside it.

And, once again, this part is optional.
#2935
Well, you don't actually need to do that part, it's optional.

But otherwise,
Spoiler

Pull the rope at the upper gallery, and make it down quickly. If you've done this too often, it won't work any more, so I suggest restarting - you're only thirty seconds from the beginning of the game anyway.

Looks like things will be starting later, unless CJ wants to get things started...
What do you mean?

I'm working like a dog (and it's been a pleasure!) to test Ghost's game and I'm curious too: when's exactly the deadline?
Well, since they're the 2007 AGS Awards, I'd assume that it's about games made in 2007, and hence the deadline has passed as of midnight.

Well, that was funny.

Oh, and the "some guy" that did the music is called Scott Jopin.

I think perhaps the games.php structure needs a "report broken link" button. For several of the older games, the download links no longer work. If oldbies were aware of which ones, perhaps they could re-upload some of those games to, say, americangirlscouts.org, and have the moderators replace the old link with a working one. Or something. Preserving history is fun, at any rate.

Eight point five, probably. We're aiming for an eleven next.

On the contrary, there is a sound file missing somewhere in your game.

At some place, you are making the command to PlaySound(3), or some variant thereof. Perhaps as an ambient, or when your score increases. You can probably find this by scanning your scripts.

Or, take a random but attention-catching sound effect and save it as SOUND3.WAV, then find out where it plays. This will help locating the problem.

Or, simply ignore it. This isn't critical.
