No, to make a platform game you need to download PGS :)

Seriously though, you can make just about anything with AGS up to and including a database app. Not that you'd want to :)

In the past we've seen platform games as well as fighting games.

I don't think we need a replacement for RoN, just for someone to make some RoN games. RoN has tons of well-developed characters and locations

Yes, and that's precisely why (in my humble opinion) a replacement would be a reasonable idea. I've looked at RoN in the past, and it's HUGE. It has literally dozens of characters and locations and such, but the point is that they all have a background history. A long background history. Basically I felt that, to do a good RoN game, I had to read up on everything, play dozens of games first, and ask several insiders for the details. It seems a very difficult place to start for new users. And, most basic plotlines in RoN have already been done.

Also, RoN is set in a quaint little town somewhere. Arguably, a similar idea in a very different setting (say, science fiction) would spark up interest again. Rigel on the Norm?

Gee. To my knowledge most commercial games have a teleport cheat or something like that, perhaps that would help? Otherwise I wouldn't know.

Google up the "Unspeakable Vault (of doom)" webcomic.

Are they considered as short or medium length games?
They're probably "brief games" or "concise games" :)

Anyway the distinction is a bit blurry, and I would suggest that somebody who has played a LOT of AGS games go over (part of) the games.php database to clear that out. I reclassified nearly all of my games as 'medium' because they can't be completed in an hour or so (unlike, say, 6-day assassin, imho).

But now that you've said this, your GUI will be expected by people who send you a PM. How's that for a paradox?

On/Off status of walkable areas

Actually I'm pretty sure these reset to 'on' whenever you re-enter the room.

Yeah, I thought of that too, but that doesn't actually work.

the engine doesn't actually need to resolve these names unless they are referenced (i.e. there is a function call) in the script; and I just checked and it indeed works that way.
Interesting, but I'd have to duplicate too many rooms that way, so that doesn't sound overly feasible. If only the reference wasn't resolved until the function is actually called :)
Oh well, I'll find a workaround. Thanks guys!

I would go for #3 (compile two different versions) except that the game is about 50 megs and it seems hardly worth it making it twice that. Is there some way to compile it twice without having to duplicate all the room data? Or, for instance, if the plugin isn't actually used except in room 15, will it only crash upon loading room 15, or still crash at the beginning?

Since ATOTK is nearly complete (seriously, folks) and there have been several Linux-related threads on the forum recently, I have a question with respect to the rain and snow plugin, and Linux.

As far as I know, AGS works fine on Linux, except if you're using plugins. Does this mean the game will work except for the plugin functions, or will not work period? The former is acceptable, the latter is not. I would be interested in hearing if there are any tips or tricks that let me achieve the latter. #IFDEF maybe?

I was using the flashlight plugin too, at first, but I rewrote that using normal AGS code so that's no longer a problem. But recoding rain & snow appears to have performance issues.

Surely that fact that you saw more broken Windows boxes than Macs or Linux is simply a reflection on their popularity?
No, it's obviously a reflection on the fact that people get frustrated by Windows, and break those boxes :)

In Soviet Russia, Singapore is from you!

Well, there are almost 800 games in the database. So you're probably missing a fair amount :)

People like him are precisely why, almost without exception, you can't be a game designer unless you also have practical skills.

If you're going to quote Jack Thompson, quote this. Especially the story surrounding the proposal, game, and donation :)

Well, here's the thing: you can try Linux now, or at any time, for free and with no strings attached. What's stopping you? If you don't like it, stop using it.

However, in your case, what I'd really recommend is a Mac. Multimedia people have been using Macs for decades. They're smooth, user-friendly, beautifully designed both in hardware and software, and they don't crash or come with daily virus alerts.

Which brings me to interfaces- I actually like to have my inventory on-screen all the time, and I can bear with more than look/use/talk buttons. Offering additional actions is a plus to me.

(shameless plug) The MegaVerb GUI, the closest thing to a text parser that isn't actually a text parser. (/shameless plug)

The problem with (1) and (3) is that they often result in a weakened plot.
Hey, I never said it was going to be easy :)
