DOTT improve from MM because every characters were all stuck in a different timeline,
From a technical point of view, MM is way more ingenious because the characters actually need to cooperate simultaneously (e.g. send char one to the basement to turn off the power and another to the attic to do something while the power is off, and remember to have all your chars out of the way while Ed walks thru the house).

Quote
Gobliins 2 also improve because while every of the 7 characters of MM have the same abilities and talents except for 1 talent which happen to be the one you'll finish the game with
You should play MM again because this just isn't true. Each of the six kids you get to select from has one or two unique talents, AND the game has several multiple endings available  depending on which kids you pick. You can arrest the meteor, send it back into space, turn it "good" and get it eaten by something hungry. It could stand more dialogue, of course, but some characters do react differently to some parts of the environment.

Ok, ok, I'm just kidding :)  I tried googling it for you but it turns out not to give very suitable results. Unfortunately.

Codename Iceman? That's the first I've heard of this game! Must have been good! (Note sarcasm) *finds screenshots* Ah, early Leisure suit larry era.
You should try it some time if you're into masochism. Early in the game you get your ID card from a guard. Only it's the wrong ID card. If you don't bother to check this (and why would you) you get stuck near the end of the game. That's just one of the many exciting dead ends you'll see!

QuoteHOWEVER Gabriel Knight wasn't the first adventure game to use a historical story either, the real first game ever to use a historical story was Conquest of Camelot (1989). SO THERE !  :=
Gold Rush?

Curse of Enchantia - er... something absolutely unique. Better see for yourself.
Isn't that the game with the talk icons that went "Hi." and "HELP!"? Looked nice, yes, never finished it though.

Well in the Arthur legends\mythology there are many stories of him and\or his knights questing for grail. But a King Arthur in historical reality has never been proven and the majority of the historians don't believe he existed.
Come on, everybody knows that after facing the Legendary Black Beast of Aaaargh, Arthur and Bedevere crossed the Bridge of Peril to face the evil French with the Cattlepult.

Soft Porn Adventure was a TEXT game. So my point still stands as this is the first graphical game that involved trying to get laid.
But the thread title says "adventure game". So nyaaah! :P

The Black Cauldron...first game (i think) to use the stripped down, one click to interact key.  It's cursed / blessed us ever since.

Good point. It's also very good with multiple solutions to puzzles, and it's the first adv. game based on a movie.

I notice that in 2005, there were two awards for "scripting". I think these should be renamed "dialogue" and "programming" to clarify the difference.

But AGS scripting isn't programming, is it? People use quite a bounch of ready-made script functions most of the time, so it should be 'Dialogue writing' and 'Scripting' or something...
If you're using the interaction editor, that would be scripting. But it is my understanding that most people (at least, most people good enough to get an award :) ) use the C++ - like language instead.

But then punished you severly by ending your game if you so much as forget to have a shave. (Okay I doubt that was in there, but it's an example)
No, THAT was Codename Iceman.

QuoteManiac Mansion and its multiple characters, a concept which was pushed to the next level with Day of the Tentacle and Gobliins 2.
To the previous level, actually. Neither DOTT nor Gobliins 2 has NPCs walking around individually, but MM does. It's arguably also the first humoristic game.

QuoteLeisure Suit Larry - 1) sex + adventure game, hitting on girls a concept
Larry 1 is a remake of Soft Porn Adventure (which, yes, was the first adult-ish game)

Maniac Mansion - first mouse-controlled game.

Hugo's House of Horrors - first amateur-made adventure game.

The Hobbit - first game with graphics (iirc)

Zork - first massively cross-platform game

Future Wars - first VGA game

Loom - in addition to what everybody already said, first game designed to have no dead ends and no killing the player

King's Quest IV - first female protagonist

Trinity - I don't like the game much, but the Klein Bottle puzzle is extremely innovative.

Space Quest I - first arcade sequence

I thought that here in Holland there is a pretty high rate of voting... i think it was something between 80% and 85% of the population :)

No, I'm afraid not. We had an excessive turnout for the European Constitution Referendum, which was massively rejected mainly because of dissent with the present government, who admittedly pulled some pretty dumb manipulation to get people to vote in favor. For instance, they put up a poster of the holocaust and said "if you don't want this to happen again, vote for the constitution". Not a good idea.

We do have a grand total of twenty-seven parties at the moment (out of seventy-five!! attempted parties, but the remainder didn't get enough signatures to be allowed to run in the election), about half of those are serious and the other half are tiny fringe groups and/or new runners with some wacko platform.

Try running Scandisk, you might have gotten a crosslink.

Take that, Jack Thompson.

Not that I mind, but is there really a point to the "recommendations" thread? It's fun for the game makers of course, but I wonder if any voter is actually influenced by that.

So in my opinion, you can vote for new categories like best drawn hair or the angriest puppy in a game, but what's it worth?

Exactly! We need one award per game released last year, it's not fair otherwise. Best game involving pirates. Best game involving ninja. Best game using graphics by a guy named Phil. Best game with a maximum score of 91. You name it!
#3835
Should we have the usual yearly chat about how to deal with the (allegedly many) people who ignore the category descriptions and simply nominate and vote for their one favorite game in every category?

I notice that in 2005, there were two awards for "scripting". I think these should be renamed "dialogue" and "programming" to clarify the difference.

Other than that, way cool! And looks like I have some catching up to do with the many games released this year.

All entries have to be in by November 27th, 2004.

Now you may find it inconciveable
or at the very least a bit unlikely, that the relative position
of the planets and the stars could have a special deep significance
or meaning that exclusively applies to only you,

But let me give you my assurance that these forcasts and predictions,
are all based on solid scientific documented evidence,
so you would have to be some kind of moron not to realize
that every single one of them is absoultely true.

You could try dropping the FMV resolution to 320x200, or lowering its framerate. It's quite feasible to shrink them to 15%-20% of their size that way. Also, I would recommend putting (most) of the movies in an optional add-on pack.

To answer your question, what's the maximum size I'd download - I'm sure that depends on everyone's opinion and connectivity, but as for myself, unless I have great expectations for a game via word-of-mouth, I'm highly unlikely to download anything over 20 megs.

Who needs them. Fast food sucks.

True. There are too many countries these days with a significant percentage of people that are seriously overweight. Free fast food doesn't help; the mystery shopping should give out free diet books instead.
