Once more, listen to the people to see what they want or need.

Haven't been able to use the room key yet...?
[close]
It is used in most un-key-like fashion, since that's what one of the rulesets required.

Done, thanks.

With this template, not really, since it uses a verb list system (you click on a verb, then on the hotspot to activate).

What you describe is more like a verb coin system (you click on a hotspot, then a list appears and you click on the verb to activate).

Personally I don't really like verb coins, but that may be because I've played a few that were just annoying to control (click, hold, drag to a precise spot, release... argh)

Obviously the Dutch and the Swedish are much more creativitious than the rest of the world :P

I like it, it's like a screenshot. I'd be in favor of adding such functionality to the games.php page so that it can (1) link to a small page of text (e.g. summary or dialogue or whatever), and (2) link to a music file in case people want to hear a game before playing.

Of course authors are not required to use either, but at least they'll be able to.

By the way make sure your URLs match... if you go to the forums at www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk, you must also go to the games list at www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk, not regular adventuregamestudio.co.uk (which gives you the same page but doesn't see you as logged in)

QuoteAl Emmo is a commercial release, and well done! I've not played the demo, and I hate westerns (second one after Radiant...), and sorry for that.
That's a pity. It's not a western in the traditional sense of the word.

Well, it's a matter of taste... I play games (and read books) out of a sense of escapism. That means that the more things are like the Real Earth (tm), the less I'm interested. That doesn't mean I hate westerns though :)

Anyway in response to the posts above... the one to point out that Al Emmo looks like Larry might be interested to hear that the entire Larry game was copied from a game called Soft Porn Adventure. The balding middle-aged lamer that both Al and Larry have things in common with is what I'd call a genre staple. There's nothing wrong with those, however.

Every story uses some genre staples; that doesn't make it any less original. A story must incorporate some familiar elements because it'd be incomprehensible otherwise (e.g. Space Quest is influenced by Star Wars, which is influenced by Flash Gordon, which is turn based upon Buck Rogers, et cetera; that doesn't mean SQ is not original, simply that it uses the same staples). Originality is not whether you have such staples, but on what story you write around them.

About the price argument, I'd wager that most people here are high schoolers or students with somewhat less money than they'd want to :). But if you compare Al Emmo's $30 to the price you'd normally pay for a cinema ticket (up to $15 around here), I'd say that Al obviously gives more hours of entertainment per dollar spent. YMMV.

I'm unable to reproduce this, could you provide any more information?

I'm afraid not. I may have been hallucinating at the time.

Not sure if this is a bug but it's somewhat annoying... I tend to put stuff like this in repeatedly_execute: if (someCharacter is here) FaceCharacterNonBlocking (thatCharacter, EGO). Okay, not quite the official code but you catch my idea. The point is that if said character also has an idle view, these two interfere: if the character is already facing EGO, the faceChar does reset its frame number to zero, which makes the idle cycle jitter.

Man, I'm finding this game incredibly tough so far!
Thanks, that was the intent :)  I do believe everything makes sense, for a given amount of sense that is <g>

I gave the feather to the monkey inside the hotel so he can write-he went outside but I don't know what else to do with him...

That's good though, you'll need him later.

Listen to the TV in the hotel. That should give you some hints.

Once the whale shoots me off to Amsterdam, I can't return to the prior screens.  Is there a way to do this, say for example to return to the zoo screen?

Sure, you can just enter the clouds to jump down.

You can get rid of the angel,

Okay, I got it to download thanks to the wonders of GetRight.

It's a very nice game and obviously a lot of hard work has been put into it. It feels similar to the classic Freddy Pharkas. Unfortunately I'm not really 'into' the wild west genre, but that's a matter of personal taste. I hope Himalaya does a fantasy or scifi game next :)

By the way I can report that in spite of the minimum system specs given, the game is playable on a 400 MHz machine, since you can speedwalk by pressing escape.
#4012
Thanks.

I promise that if you keep the GUIs at either the top or the bottom, they won't obscure anything important on the screen. I'm not entirely sure about the sides, though.

Oh by the way, for people who want to see more of the game in short order, the ^X teleport debug key is enabled (although it will cause your inventory to vanish, so you can't actually use it to win the game). This allows you to visit the lunar bunker, among others. And room #7 has a rather nice puzzle, if I may say so myself.

Okay, this obviously needs a better help function... you can right-click to open the verb gui, and you can also right-click to close it again to make more room for the rest of the screen. You should drag/drop the verbs you use most to the top, so you can access them instantly. Failing that, use keyboard shortcuts.
#4014
Most people in the game need something, or need help with something. Talk to them and figure out what it is... I believe all puzzles have a clue in either the 'look' or the 'talk' response.

Oh, and wear the hats. See if something happens.

how do i get off the first screen? i have no idea what to do.  ;D

Listen to Cuppit, he'll explain how the interface works (right-click to expand the verb and item panels, drag and drop verbs and GUIs if you want to, use first letter keys as shortcuts).

Then, click 'enter' on the 'alley', to enter the alley.

Say, does this system actually allow you to create commands like PULL s.th. BEHIND s.th?
Yes.

Quote
A bit too much perhaps- i guess it's quite a tiresome task to provide unhandled_event lines for all possible combinations.
Ah, but you don't have to. You can set a default for "pull" to read "I cannot move it" or something, and it will automatically respond that way whenever you haven't provided a better answer. Most Lucas games work similarly.

Monkey Island II? :)

Try Cirque de Zale, it has similar atmosphere (but no pirates).
#4018
Noted, thanks. Dragging a verb or a GUI, btw? Try left-dragging, that should work :)

(edit) I am unable to reproduce this. Could you please indicate what exactly you were dragging, and where to?

#4019
Darn, I set it to download before going to sleep, and when I woke up I found it had cut off after a couple dozen megs. You're being heavily slashdotted, Erpy!
#4020
I believe so... it was possible for awhile to get characters stuck on top of each other. It should work in the latest beta.
