If you're just using a view interactions, the Sierra interface is very good, and it leaves the most room on the screen for pretty graphics.
If you want multiple verbs, the Lucasfilms one is excellent; you can go up to at least fifteen verbs without cluttering up. However, for a Lucas GUI it is very important that you implement keyboard controls!
Personally I've never quite liked single-click things like QfGV, nor do I like verbcoins (because the click-drag-release movement gets on my nerves, but with a decent keyboard alternative it would be very workable).

I second Strazer's idea about multiple keys per action. Also basic stuff like Esc=controls, Tab=inventory, F5/F7=save/load, etc.

Actually the symptoms of files being cut off half-way through may be caused by a faulty hard drive, or simple logical errors in your file system. Have you run scandisk lately?

If you're willing to abandon 360degree turning (and use 90degree steps instead) then it would be possible to do semi-scrolling walls in perspective using creative spriteworks. You can still have the monsters run around like mad, of course.
However, the source code for several FPS's (Doom and Hexen, iirc) is freely available. Because of the complications of the scripting involved, you'd better do it in good ol' C++.

In the code that pops up your inventorywindow (GUIOn), add something like this,
Code: ags

if (game.num_inv_carried == 0) Display ("You don't have anything!");
else GUIOn (INVENTORY);

(not sure if I spelled that var correctly, so check the manual)

Could be frameskipping caused by some kind of slowdown on your computer (any expensive operation in AGS, or any other program running at the same time)
#4706
Sounds very cool. But out of personal pet peevishness, please add some kind of keyboard support as well?
#4707
What you should do is find the relevant button in the GUI editor, and put some text on it: @INVSHR@ for instance. You should search the manual for it as there are some variants on it.

I do believe this is a memory issue, so yes, the size of sprites matters. Note that windows tends to behave strangely if you're short on memory (try opening thirty MS Paint windows simultaneously and you'll see what I mean).

MI2 is the best game ever. seriously.

I'll second that.
Just love the library. And the wanted poster. And the puzzles, even the idiotic monkey wrench one :)

As a workaround, try this:
* move all inventory items carried by EGO to character #1
* AddInv the four special skills
* move all inventory items back to EGO

Now the special skills should appear at the top of the inv list.

The other question bothers me: for what reason did Cirque De Zale gained so much popularity? It is a neat game, but can't be even compared to professionally made Appreantice 2 and 7 Days a Sceptic (my fav)..

I believe the reason is that the nominations were decided by just one or two people, rather than by a large consensus. Hence some games were overlooked.

Try contacting the HOTU admins (not particularly easy, I'm afraid) and ask if you may be under a blanket IP ban because of somebody else's misbehavior (or leeching).

Anything specific you're looking for? I don't think posting my global script here would be all that useful.

How about this:
Code: ags

#define here character[GetPlayerCharacter ()].room

Rules: Every couple of weeks, a post will be made with a list of items and a scenario. Using your wit and skill find a way to complete the scenario with the items provided. You can only use a set number of items of your own choice. When I say use your skill, use it. The deadline is a bit later than for earlier puzzle contests, to give people the chance to respond. If there are less than three entries by then, I'll probably want to extend it a bit.

Voting: After the deadline, voting shall begin to commence an initiating start.

The Grand Prize: The winner gets a lifetime FREE supply of green pixels! Supplied real soon to a monitor near you. In addition, the winner may use those green pixels (among others) in a brand new Puzzle Time.

Scenario: The location is Ancient Rome. You wish to become one of the senatores, but you don't have enough popular support yet.
This does not have to be historically accurate at all, just go with popular opinion of what Rome was like - or read a couple of Asterix comics. Nothing wrong with a subtle anachronism or two.

Problems: There are not enough people that would vote for you (it's up to you whether that means one person short, or nobody at all, or anything in between). You'll have to convince them through bribery, intimidation, hypnosis, becoming a folk hero, or whatever else comes to mind.
Bonus points for adding a secondary problem with some historical basis, e.g. someone with elephants who has lain siege to the city, or a slave riot, or trouble with the gladiators over at the colosseum.

Equipment: Three or more of the following, plus up to three items of your own choice.
Toga
Gladius (i.e. sword)
Laurel
Wrist watch (well, they always show up in cowboy films, too)
Helmet
Parchment
Quill
Quail
Chariot
Forked stick
Boomerang
Goose
Divine statuette of Jupiter
Myrrh

Is it? HOTU offer abandoned warez just like Abandonia
I think there's a huge moral difference between HOTU "we know this isn't legal and we will (and have) take down anything that people object to", and Abandonia "we really have permission from Sierra (unlike everybody else) only we won't prove it to you".

QuoteBasically everyone on this forum supports abandonware and downloads these things privately,
Speak for yourself.

As people have said before, it's an ethical borderline and you could probably go ahead, but don't go deluding yourself or anyone else that it's legal.

Wow, this gives me a 75% success rate so far :)
Okay, I'll go and think of some new puzzly thingy, probably in the weekend.

Ah <grin> trouble is that if I had, it would probably be in Dutch...

Though not entirely an adventure, a game that allows you to interact with anything and everything is Ultima 6 (and also, Savage Empire and Martian Dreams, which were built with the same engine). You can go to such extremes as making cloth from flax, cutting it in pieces, dipping them in tar, breaking a branch from a tree and putting the cloth on there - ta dah, we have a torch. That wasn't quite necessary to complete the game but most any fiddling would eventually produce something.
#4718
I don't believe that what Abandonia is doing is wise. They draw far too much attention to themselves, which makes them ripe pickings for any corporate lawyer wishing to shut them down.
They've never given any proof or backing to their persistent claims that they in fact would have permission, which makes them rather hard to believe. Especially if you consider that HOTU and other more famous abandonware sites never got permission either.

In the pond, try jumping over the stones to the center.

The mountain is in the upper left corner.

It's a very good game, and I'm glad it won. Reminds me of the Lucas classics.
