General Discussion / Re: Commercial games?
Thu 15/07/2004 03:42:20
My friend wears his NES controller shirt all the time. I was going to get one, but I don't want to look like a copy-cat.

Your point seems to be that you would buy a game from a real developer/publisher like LucasArts but won't buy a game from an amateur, because you assume the LucasArts game is going to be worth paying for and the amateurs' isn't. I think that's a flawed assumption. Most published games are shit. But that's just the way it is - most of everything is shit. Most movies, most games, most books. There are only a few amateur adventures I would pay for, but I would pay for them because they're quality rather than because some big company made them.

The whole debate's a bit pointless considering there's been only one or two commercial AGS adventures. (Fatman and... anything?)

...but the Ezine is notorious for its low review scores. What games have recieved above 80? I bet Pleurghburg wouldn't even make 90. Besides, you should be reading the review itself, not the numbers. The numbers are cheap cop-outs!

Day of the Tentacle
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Blade Runner
Myst
Myst III: Exile

I think when a person gets stuck on a puzzle game it can sometimes totally break the experience (the Dig's turtle puzzle, anyone?). But it took me about four years to complete the Fate of Atlantis (I was around 8 when I got it), and it's my favorite game ever, so... maybe not. (I still have the path through the volcano to the Collassus memorized... woah) I do think that using a walkthrough for a puzzle-oriented game like Myst is stupid because that's the entire point of the game, whereas using a walkthrough for something like Grim Fandango is okay with me.

I suppose you've heard of Rise of the Hidden Sun, right?

I Would Suggest You Don't Use the Shift Button So Much And Capitalize Only The Beginnings Of Sentences And Proper Nouns.

Silly, that's Mrs. Blue Cup. This is Mr. Blue Cup. Though what she sees in him, I don't know.

What do you mean by vector?

Vector drawings, drawings that don't use pixels and thus can be scaled, and edited easily, as well as being much smaller. Generally used in Flash and other such programs.

How can anyone not be convinced that Yufster is insane by now?

Good luck, Minimi... and Godspeed. :)

It still looks nice tough

Ah! How did you know about Kyojo's victory dance?! ;)

In the future, you might want to consider something known as "beta testing".

Man, you have a really slow server MoodyBlues.

And this is still PNG: http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Caption2.PNG

At last! The wheels appear to move! Peter Thomas, you're a genius. Except that most wheelchairs do have a crap load of spokes... but some don't. Like Kyojo's new one. Yay.

The direction of the wheels is really just perception, for a while I got myself to see it going backwards as well. But I think most people see it as going forwards.

This discussion reminds me much about Hitchikers guide to the galaxy, a book which, even though being only the imagination of the arthur, still makes you think about things.

Actually, I think the best reference is The Restaurant at the End of the Universe where the Man Who Rules The Universe doesn't think it exists.

"Fish come from far away, or some I'm told. Or so I imagine I'm told."

"Processed Cheese?" No more Yufster?

Wasn't the last time she was Yufster several months ago? She changes her name more often than James Bond has sex.

Hehe, I have been working on a game with a polar bear as a main character... well, I was until I started working on my Kyojo game again.

I hope somebody makes a game with a unique interface based on an animal's senses, like a dog that has "smell" vision rather than eyesight...

Unforunately I'm too busy to do such a game. :(
