Rich, you are the one that got all this started ;) when you asked about having characters randomly walk across the screen in the background.  Maybe it will make more sense when I get it done and thetre is a demo available.

QuoteAGS cannot continue, this exception was fatal. Please note down the numbers above, remember what you were doing at the time and notify CJ on the Tech forum.

(Room 6 script line 27)

I don't think it is a good idea to make purposeful crashes with AGS specific information.  If reflects poorly on AGS, CJ, and the rest of us, IMHO.

Here is an alternative suggestion....

Quote....Your computer has been disabled by the RIAA and Sen. Orin Hatch because evil MP3 files have been found on your computer or you were looking at naked pictures on your computer.

Please note what you were doing at the time and contact the senator with a suitable campaign contribution.

The disclaimer would need to be thoughtful and well considered text.  My little example serves to illustrate the point but is not really suitable for actual use.  The other thing to realize is that no matter what you write, someone, somewhere will pretend to be upset with you, just to further their own goals.  The "Harry Potter" thing is a recent example of how unreasonable people can be.

QuoteYeah, I was wondering if it'd be possible in AGS. I'm sure it is, but it would require some heavy modification.
I don't think this is a s difficult as you think.  Unless I'm missing something you would just need a way of changing player characters and a player character specific method of scoring and keeping statistics.   I think you should reconsider using AGS for this.

Junc:

Great!  Knowing that folks are interested in using it gives me incentive to get busy.  I think your timing will work out just fine for me.

I'll be picking up the animation engine near the end of July.  I am starting a new consulting project that will pretty much consume the computer programming part of my brain.

I had started on this a while back but as Scrop says it's a pretty big task.  It requires that I carry a bunch of stuff around in my head while the work is in progress.  I do plan on finishing this and will realse it open source.   I will be thrilled if people want to use it.

Perhaps a disclaimer of some sort would be helpful (i.e. "the events, characters, etc are fictional, are loosely inspired by historical fact, mythology,  and ancient/antiquated beliefs and practices.  Any similarities with contemporary groups are coincidental, etc, etc,...").

General Discussion / Re:My Absense

I feel like I have turned the corner and am now on the upside of things.   I made this post just to let everyone know that I hadn't lost interset (at least not permanently) and that I amplanning on being back in a few weeks.  I saw Helm's post  in the tech forum and that kind of motivated me to say something about my absense.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments as they are greatly appreciated.

General Discussion / My Absense

Hi everyone,

Life has a way of keeping us busy with the real world sometimes.  I haven't been around much lately because of real life not because I lost interest in AGS.   So this weekend I'll be changing apartments, moving my wife's beauty solon business, and starting a new consulting project next week.

These are just annoyances though.  The thing that really got to me was my mom's recent illnes.  It's not certain how it's going to turn out but so far she is responding very weel to the treatments and will probably be ok in a few months.

I have missed everyone here.  I think of you all as good friends even though we have never met.   (I live a while in the South (USA)  and "you all" is correct there).

I'll be back in a few weeks and look forward to seeing you then :)

Cheers
Rick

Helm,

Yes this is still on my todo list.  When will you need it?

Netmonkey: The above link has several different offers and it seems you were looking at a different one than I was.  Here is the offer  which I was referring.  They will do smaller than 500 units the the price breaks are at 1000 and 10000 units for US$0.69 and US$0.32 per unit respectively.

I just came across this CD publisher and thought some of you may be interested in taking a look.  They will do 1000 CD's for around US$690 and 10000 for around US$3500, including a 4 color label and CD duplication.  This is one of the better prices I've seen so I thought there may be some interest.  Well here's the link...

Thanks synthetique.

May I suggest that a small text file be included in such font packs that briefly states the name of the author and the conditions under which they may be used.  In this way proper credit can be given to the author whenever they are used.

Maybe something like the following should be used?  Well, select any license or terms you wish but make sure you include your name. :)

Here is one from MIT that was made for small children.  I haven't had a chance to try it, but since I have veryy little musical ability  I thought this would be for me.  If anyone takes the time to try it out let us know what you think about it.

wOoDz:  My favorite linux distro is Suse.  It kind of comes with all the sw ever written; :)  well at least as much of it that will fit on to 7-8 CDs.

I'm happy there is a native linux engine and I am patiently waiting for the port of the editor.  I can't complain about the pace of development, things seem to progress rapidly around here.  So for me th AGS/Linux editor will come when it comes.  I am greatful that someone is actively thinking about it.

(The following ancedote is one example of the great win/linux debate I have encountered in real life.  I thought you may enjoy it even though the specifics are not related to AGS)
I design and deploy industrial control systems in my day job.  In the win/linux debate I have observed both sides of the issue.   Now first of all Windows is inferior, technically, to Linux in the kind of industrial applications I am talking about.    However, many of my colleagues, make the mistake of prematurely dismissing windows and the need for our creations to operate in both worlds.  The need I speak of is of a political and pshycological nature rather than technical.  It's a weird phenomnem,  if you don't provide windows compatibility, they will (the customer) complain about and resist your system;  if you do provide windows compatibility they will very likely not use it for very long.  :)  IMHO, the only way to win this debate is to not have it.

I don't think we will settle this debate here though.  Let's just be greatful for what we have and gently encourage those who are toiling to bring us even more ;D

monster,

Blender may be something you may be interested in.  I haven' tried it yet but it seems reasonable.  It's basically a 3D drawing program.  But supossedly it has realtime  renderin and scripting ability so that you can make your own 3D games.     I was looking at it to possibly make backgrounds for AGS.   It's interesting since you can also use it to make a 3D game.  It's open source and it seems like it's actively being developed.  There is a support forum so it seems like there are quite a few users.

Why not ive it a try and let the rest of us know what ytou think of it.

Ginny,  Thanks for bringing this up and being persistent.  It's something I have always wondered about but never got around to figuring out.   I think this would make a good entry in a faq somewhere if any of the moderators are listening...

Thanks again Ginny and everyone else.... :)

I only mentioned it because it falls into those class of things that are more difficult to know about than they are to fix.  I just thought you would want to know ...
