You can do as Gilbet suggests.  But why not just keep a list of pointers?  You can create a pointer array as Gilbet show you

Code: ags

InventoryItem* ListOfItems[100];

General Discussion / Re: Politics in AGS

Well, I highly value freedom.  Eccoomic freedom is pretty much a prerequisite for political and other civil liberties.

I noticed the bias and ignored it when  possible.   For example many of the questions about ecconomic freedom were posed as giant multi-national corporation scenarios in attempt to invoke negative knee jerk reactions rather than asking an honest question.

One of the questions was posed as a "universal" through the use of the word "always".   So people who would generally agree with the statement but nwho read carefully would answer "disagree".  Not rerally honest in my humble opinion.

There were also some questions I  found to be too vague.   The "compulsory school attendance"  for example didn't say what level of school or who was paying the bills.   For me, If I'm paying then I ought to be able to decide to attend a particular session of instruction or not.  If someone else is paying then I ought to have an obligation to attend every second of instruction; especially if that someone else is being compelled to pay by force of law (i.e. taxes).

I answered almost all the questions either "agree" or "disagree"; only 2-3 were answered "strongly".

I thought the "naturally gay" question was also dishonest.   Presumably the test would score one less libertarian for thinking that it often a learned behavior and answering accordingly.    The test unfairly assumes that such an answer indicates that the answerer is also in favor of laws that strip freedoms from homosexuals that everyone else enjoys.  It seems to me a devious kind of bigotry underlies a question used in this manner.

I am surprised I didn't have a bigger libertarian score.   As I said I highly value my personal freedom.   I believe that one the criminal questions I answered "strongly" in support of punishment over rehabilitation.   Crimes are committed by the same people over and over.  It's not a question of punishment as it is a question of keeping them in custody as long as possible so that they are unable to commit more crime.   It's the reason "three Strikes" laws seem to be so effective.

===============

I find my self wondering if anyone scoring in the lower left corner are feeling any cognitive dissonance by being simultaneously for freedom, state power and against economic freedom?

I stumbled upon this website and thought it may be of interest to some folks here.   It contains a bunch of PC/Network info and links (perhaps somewhat dated).

http://www.spazmatic.net/

The forum doesn't seem to be of much use as it was last updated over a year ago.   But the Knowledge Base led me to third party software for my wireless router which I found to be very interesting and would like to give a try someday.

You may find a jewel of your own .... cheers.   ;D

The reason I ask is that there are apparently a half dozen fake removers that actually install more malware and doesn't remove the Cybot.

Subject line says it all.  I have a Toshiba laptop, acquired this summer for a project.  It came with Windows Vista and haven't yet had a chance to convert it to Linux.   Any help is appreciated.

RickJ started with something similar, called DemoCycle.

Actually DemoCycle was originally created by Spyros and others (as far as I was able to determine) when DemoQuest was upgraded to include the games factory.  Many years later I updated the source code to be compatible whit a more recent version of AGS.  AGS didn't have modules at the time.

I have been thinking about upgrading DemoCycle for sometime now.   The two things I want to accomplish are

1) refactoring the main part of the code into one or more reuseable modules.
2) what Khris and Steve done ;D

Khris, if you don't mind contributing what you have done (or are doing) I would use that as a basis for upgrading DemoCycle.  Thanks Khris and Steve...

In the past I have put a couple of non game projects in the database so that people could find and make use of them.   AGS is quite versatile and can be use for many purposes other than games.   So why not have a couple of other non-game categories in the database that are not rated by the panel?   It would make life easier for the panel and would avoid situations as described in the initial post.

- Experimental   (whatever)
- Entertainment (IF, movie, comic strip, etc)
- Applications     (SSH walk cycle generator, RickJ Event Timer)
- Open Source   (code,resource packs,examples, etc)

If one wanted the game rating panel to rate one's work then it would be submitted to one the current categories.   If it was submitted to one of the above categories then panel wouldn't have to bother with it.

Just my 21 cents ...

QT has cross platform 2D, 3D, Multimedia, plug-in, network, etc.  I think it would make a good candidate for the basis of an eventual open source runtime.  It would also deserve consideration if the editor is ever recast in C++.  There is also C# bindings  for QT which may also be useful.

I understood the OP to say that C# could be used to overcome the limitations of AGS script.  Since the AGS runtime  doesn't execute C# then it can only be assumed that .net and/or mono would serve as the runtime.

Hmmm, so you are suggesting to use VS IDE  to write C# instead of using the AGS IDE to write AGS script and the resulting code would then be executed by the .NET runtime instead of the the AGS runtime.  Am I missing something?

General Discussion / Re: Who gets the money?
Tue 02/11/2010 05:54:05
Apparently  I don't see what you see Mills.   Both people know the money is not theirs and that it's very likely that the owner will turn up sometime to collect what is rightfully theirs.  It would be foolish to believe otherwise and stupid to act on such a belief  such as by spending the money.

Mr B's credit card account is no business of Mr A. regardless of the nature of their relationship.  It's the same question as asking "Mr B lends Mr A $100 dollars to buy shoes.  Mr. A repays the loan and Mr A uses the money to place a bet on "MyBigHorsey".   MyBigHorsey wins  and pays a 100:1.  How much should A share with B???".  It makes no sense to even think about it.      :=

B keeps the money until the mistake is corrected by the SC or credit card company and they ask him to return it, which he is both legally and morally obligated to do.

One could argue that he is morally obligated to inform SC of the mistake.  It shouldn't take more than few minute phone call to explain the nature of the billing error and the details of the cc transaction.   I personally would not be willing to spend more time than that and that's where my morale obligation would end.

Mr. B took all the risks and burdens to help Mr A acquire the shoes.  Mr. A has no standing (business) with SC or the credit card company period.   I can't see any reason or circumstance where Mr A gets any of the extra money?

Calin how about adding the ability to copy/clone  or "cut and paste" controls?  For example one would create a control such as a button and edit it's properties in the normal way.

The copy function could be activated by right  clicking the control and selecting copy from a context menu.   This would save the control's properties in a clipboard/buffer.   The GUI editor's cursor would be loaded with the copied control so that a left click would instantiate a new control at the click location with the same property values as the original.  The X,Y position would be changed to the current cursor position.   If the user drags a rectangle then the x,Y position as well as the height and width properties could be changed.

The copy function would also need to create a unique name.  Perhaps there could be an option to popup a text input box that would allow the user to enter the control name or press enter or OK to accept the auto-generated default.

@Visionmind:  I have also went back and read the original post and agree with much of what you say.

To expand upon the "panel" and "controlled environment" a bit...  I would characterize the panel as being made up of community volunteers rather than an elite selected group.   The controlled environment would mean that CJ remains our fearless leader and mentor and that there is an orderly process by which contributions are included in the official release.

I would think the challenge is to bring enough people up to speed so that they would be able to help each other rather than depending upon CJ to answer everyone's questions.   Someone asked "What negative is there with going whole hog open source?" and perhaps the answer is that if widely announced it would attract multitudes of developers with multitudes of questions, ideas, etc.   A good problem to have in the long run but hardly a solution to CJ's current time problem.

A good question to ask is "Is the editor source code sufficently modular and organized so as to facillitate parallel development by multiple developers or would some refactoring be helpful and a good first step in this process?".   How can AGS be seperated into relatively independent parts?   For example, just to get an idea of what I'm talkling about, something along the lines of ...

- User Interface
- Language/Compiler
- Resource Handling
- File/Project management
- Runtime/Target Selection

IMHO, there would be no point to recruit mulitple developers if they are not able to work in parallel.  At one point in time DemoQuest used a serial development model where one developer took the files, added their contribution, and then passed them on to the next developer.   It's my understanding this didn't work out as well as hoped.  So I think this ought to be the first order of business should this prcess go forward.   This could be the first task taken on by the volunteer staff?

Hope this is helpful.
