Hey, thank you for your reply. I do understand better what you did now. I really like this little exchange of views because it's inspiring to me. (nod)
Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes, and all those "Mystery Murder" movies i've seen.
I guess that when it's a movie and I'm passive it all OK. But when here, I'm active, I got that Sherlock/Tiabata complex where I had to remember myself that I was just a Watson indeed. I was tasked to find the "HOW" and that was it but I got ahead of myself and thought I was THE investigator. I forgot my place. :-D
Do you see what you did to me here?  8-0

Spoiler
I wasn't frustrated by your ending. I thought it was epic, well written and amazingly put together with all those wonderfull/incredible(!!!)-how-did-he-do-it animations. And i loved the fact that I could choose how it would "end".
When I was asked about who the killer might be, I really sat back on my seat and started thinking about who it might be. And that's something, that's how much I was into your game. :)
If there was any frustration on my side at the end, it was in fact that I wanted this game to be longer (and yeah, to be the Sherlock/Tiabata).

And I think you had a great idea there, to make the ending somewhat interactive. Like with quesyions, and even if the player gets it right the Sherlock/Tiabata will always prove why at the end the player will always be the Watson. (laugh)

This is an inspiring little exchange, thank you for that. (nod)

Aaaand here goes nothing.  :P

Wonderful graphics, visuals, animations and music! The overall ambient felt great.

Spoiler
I also feel like some of the information that was given at the end could've been found by playing.
I felt like "Well yeah, if I did have that information before."

A had great fun playing this great little gem! (nod)

I played the demo... sort of (because I'm stuck at the gate  :P )
I love the graphics, the audio and the overall ambient, quite a strange game so far. (nod)
(Also: I can collect those shells over and over again just by leaving the room and coming back.)

One major issue: the WASD keyboard thing. I'm part of those people in Europe that have an AZERTY keyboard.
So it's just about a small "IsKeyPressed" scripting thing that would change our lives if we want to enjoy your game like:

Pressing the key A OR Q (Left)
Pressing the key W OR Z (Up)
S & D (Down & Right) are the same on both keyboards so that's OK.

Cheers  :)

I really liked playing this game. Lots of things going on here. Many great details in animations. Loved the guy at the entrance watching you depending on where you are. And when he woke up. (laugh)
Overall a great moment with lots of fun, great graphics, music and animations.
Spoiler
There's just that one puzzle based on outdoor survival skills that I have in my global memory from movies etc. but did not have in this instance because of the scenery of the game. I was expecting to find another (more modern) object to use for the whole coin thing. So there was much "clicking everything on everything everywhere." to finally go "Ah, oh yes." If I was in a forest I would've understand it... I guess. But heh that's just me ! :P

And I love the AGS graffiti! I will follow that inspiration you gave me. I think that it would be fun if every game made with AGS had "AGS" somewhere, even if just as an easter egg, like very, very subtle and hidden; but it exists in the game and the player can find it. (nod)

Completed Game Announcements / Re: Yip Quest

Haha that was a fun game to play! I had a good time playing this small gem.
(Had to sit back a while because I missed the column for some reason.  :P )
I liked the switching between kobolds.
I also liked the double (triple?) ending, the conclusion of the quest.  (laugh)

What I would do is go to the "Explore project" (on the right in the editor just above "Plugins") > "Scripts" > "Global Script" >"Edit Script".
Then go to line 78 or so (where it says "function repeatedly_execute()"

And in there I would type:

gInventory.Visible = true;

Well, that was a little big something.
I liked every aspect of it. The visuals, the music, the story, the well-thought gameplay aspects.
I loved the logic I needed to go back search info on the computer to move on and unlock locations and people.
That aspect made me feel like a real detective.

To me, this could be like a pilot episode of a series where we discover more about the detective, Teleia, the mainland, so much potential... see what i mean (just keep the same format)? (Wishful thinking here  :P )

Yep, that was a little big something!

One little story-wise question:
Spoiler
I might have overlooked or missed something, but what happened or where is the real Simon? Did he never show up? why?

Quote from: Kastchey on Wed 10/01/2024 19:10:26Please remember you really don't have to play all games, or even many games to nominate. Any nomination for a game that you think deserves to be recognized is valid. You can always change your votes later if you get to play more games.

Really appreciate everyone's votes!

Alright then! Thank you for your reply  :)

I'm new to this part of AGS, so it's a little overwhelming to see all those games in the list. And the possible up to ten nominations per category.
I'll do my best to play some more games for this time and do my best, I guess?
I'll have to keep this in mind for 2024.  :-[

A small and well done story with just that background ambient that's needed for immersion.
And the audio work was good!
And I liked the ending
That was a fun little moment.  (nod)

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION:

DOWNLOADS :

[Enter Name] has grown up in the orphanage of Metro City, capital of planet Antoryos, and thus has been given a role to participate in society by becoming a police officer.
with police academy friend Darcy they choose to patrol at night because of the ambient created by the lights of the city.

PLEASE CONSIDER FOR:
- Best Freeware Game
- Best Short Game
- Best Audio
- Best Visuals

Thank you very much!  (nod)

I made my first game at 1920*1080, My new game I'm working on is 1280*720.
The reason is that nowadays, you can have great looking games at 640*360 or less on a 1920*1080 screen.

I create my character's animations at 400 pixels height.
Because you can set the character's scale when creating a walkable area.
It's always better to have a big image scaled down than the opossite, because maybe at one point you will have to sscale it up.
Also, AGS does a great job keeping the quality of your character images when you scale it up or down.

So, think bigger than what you need and manage it in the Walkable area settings.

I just finished to play the demo and I had great fun.
Notably how fast I got dragged into the story, the ambient, the characters.
This will be something.

keep up the great work!  (nod)

Yeah sorry for the basic math thing , at that point of that day my brain froze somehow :P

I will finally use your second script, it's more clear to me and the ClaimEvent will secure it al.
And I can continue adding key_press stuff.

Also, thank you for your explanations!

Cheers!

You can go through any obstacle on your way to finish a game if you really love what you're doing.
And you really have to fkn love it because the challenges are big and many to get there.
It's so overwhelming, so many aspects, so much to do.

How do I do it, as a one-person studio... well like you said, step by step.
I have that "global brain", so I "see" the game as it could be when finished.
Thus I also see all of the things I have to do, and that's where it get's overwhelming.

Once I know where I want to go (I think it's the most important starting point), I try hard to calm down my brain and get more "sequential".
I have ALL those things I have to do. Sometimes I take too much time sitting here and thinking about how this and how that.

So at one point I'm like OK, what can I do >right now, because I will have to do it anyway.
Like "Damn it I have that plot/story/character problem, I have to figure it out."
Yes I do. But right now? I don't feel inspired right now.
Let's put that aside for the moment and focus on what I really can achieve right now for that game.
Changing the hair cut and color of a character and that's enough for today?
Great, I made one step. And that step kept me (and my brain) in my "game universe".
So while I changed my character's hair color, I got an idea about that plot moment I was stuck in.

As you can see from the replys, the ways are as diverse as there are creators.
I would be one to say to aim for perfection and greatness because it's inspiring.
I like to think that it's better to have a big picture that you can scale down than a small picture that you want to scale up. Because, you know... pixels.
The tricky part of that is that you have to know that you will have to scale it down at one point, and then actually do it.

And then: Finish things. Just-Finish-Things. You started it, finish it. "learn and move on", but finish the project, whatever "finishing the project"  means to you at that moment, I really think you have to "act it". It will bring you peace of mind and global experience points for your next project.

Quote from: Khris on Sun 17/12/2023 19:10:14Why not use on_key_press instead?
Because I didn't know it existed.  :P

I'm pretty happy with my solution, inspired by CaptainD, but I'm intruiged by this.

For what I'm able to understand, it seems like you manage both left and right movements with that ekeyCode k, thus making the script like half the size.
After some trying I made it work (means I figured out where to place it ), so I have some questions if you don't mind:

- Are the signs ++ and -- the same as +=1 and -=1 ?
- What does the last line ( oBucket.X = 500 + pos * 70; ) mean? I can see that it calculates the movement but how?
  Does the math involves the position number (0,1,2)? Is it the * sign? How does it go to the left?

Now that I see Matti's answer I understand why i couldn't make your code work.  (laugh)
(and also because I didn't fully understand it( I was coming back with questions))

But you DID give me a solution because of that great idea to use a TIMER!  (nod)

And I came up with this one:

Code: ags
    if (IsKeyPressed(eKeyLeftArrow))
    {
      if (object[3].X > 500 && IsTimerExpired(3))
      {
        aConductors_01.Play();
        object[3].X = object[3].X - 70;
        SetTimer (3, 5);
      }
    }

So thank you for your answer and your inspiration.  :)

Cheers!

Glad I could help :)

I suggest this for random stuff:

Code: ags
int Talk1 = Random (2);  //character 1 talking (3 possible answers here > 0, 1 & 2)

if (Talk1 == 0) cCharacter.Say ("Blah blah."); // random = 0
else if (Talk1 == 1) cCharacter.Say ("Bah bah."); // random = 1
else cCharacter.Say ("Bye"); //random = 2
