mmm. Discworld Noir.  Anyone who has played my games can see the obvious influence of DN.  A true masterpiece, marred only by the fact that it won't play on Windows XP. :-(

"As soon as you walked through the wall, I could see you were a troll of destruction!"

Mm... I hear you. It's sadly underrated, in my opinion. I know I read somewhere about some way to get DWN to run in XP, but I'll be damned if I can remember where...

"Mooncalfs silence spoke louder than words.
Well, not literary.
It wouldn't have much of a silence if it did.
I gather that's the kind of thing that silences get kicked out of school for.
...The point was, I knew there was something he wasn't telling me."

Jackhammer:
Heh, that's unfortunately the bad side of any religion, when people turn into fanatics and refuse to see things in any other way than their own...
And "Reign in Blood" was a fine choice, btw... Be sure to play "Jesus Saves" for that person the next time... :)
(Although saying Slayer are Devil-worshipers is wrong - Tom Araya has said himself that they are just storytellers of of how horrible life really is...)

And being into metal music is as Ghost says, a thing which most will hold against you, accusing you of being a devil-worshipper or whatnot...
In fact, the only kind of metal where being a satanist is required is in Black Metal - The rest of the sub-genres are most of the time very non-religous on the whole.
That said, I'll just say that I'm not a religous person, but I have nothing against either christians or satanist, and I can understand both views.

Vampire-obsessed people do scare me as well. I am rather fascinated with werewolf myths and stuff though(I never should've played GK2...), and found this site while googling, not long ago:

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/lair/6918/handbook.html

I am still unsure what to think about it... Seems to be a bit in the same vein as the vampire sites...
I still find it kind of fascinating to read, though.
But then again, I'm weird.

Fortunately, I haven't experienced people playing loud music in the middle of the night, but I do feel that some people have the need to  express their taste in music very loudly sometimes... As for example, in our class, most of the people only listen to what's popular/on the radio for the moment (And if it's good music they either turn it off or they don't know what it is...)- And of course, they have to crank the latest Radio Hit up to eleven and tell everyone how great it is... Sigh.

Me and a friend sometimes try to provoke some reactions from these people by putting Slayer or some other heavy music in the cd-player, just for fun...  I love too see the reactions when "Angel of Death" kicks in, and they ask me "What's that shit you're listneing to?"
...Ah... I love being the underdog sometimes...  :)

Grim Fandango, Gabriel Knight 1, Discworld Noir...

Mm... Noir...

[uncontrolled discworld noir quoting-mania]

"Heard of the Milka?"
"Sure. Put it in my coffee-a."
"Ha, ha, ha. It's a ship."
"Yeah, I know."

"Oh, I'm not sure. My memory isn't very good. I need things to jog it..."
"Would a crowbar work?"
"That's not what I meant."

"If I mention a gold-plated jewel, will you say something sarcastic?"
"It's a good bet."

[/uncontrolled discworld noir quoting-mania]

...

...Ok. I'm allright now.

Spiffing background, Pessi! I love the whole water-coloured look.

Allright - since I had the fortune to go to a party last saturday, I felt as if it was a bit fitting if this weeks theme was "After The Party"...

In other words, draw an apartment/room/lawn/whatnot just after there has been a huge, uncortollable party.
Beer bottles, cigarette butts, vomits, drugs, cats nailed to the wall... You name it. Use your imagination... (I know you will...)

- No colour limit
- Size: 370 x 260

Draw on, brothers and sisters.

EDIT:
I changed the entry date due to the lack of entries... Come on, people - Not much of a blitz, this? Can you just let Pessi walk away with the victory like that? ;) Hm?
#408
Weela - So this means I should start a new blitz, in other words? Rightey-ho.
Kudos to all of the other entries - All worthy winners!
#409
My vote goes to Pessi. No doubt about it.

Hitchcocks classic statement that suspense is achieved by letting the viewer see what is about to happen to the character, while the char. itself is oblivious to it, is often quoted within film-theory, but does it also apply to games?
Well, in my opinion, no - Since in a game, you are both the viewer and the character at the same time, and therefore, if you were to see what was going to happen, you would be able to avoid the danger or event that is about to happen, thus eliminating the whole element of suspense all together.
So what can you do to create suspense/horror?

I'd say it's a lot about the mood, the atmosphere and the overall feeling of the game - And that includes many elements.
Music, as Puddin' said, is one of the most important parts - Even if your graphics are simplistic and perhaps "below the standards", some really haunting music can add a mood to the scene that wasn't there before.
AGS examples of this is for example Pleurghburg and the Byzantine demo - Both games feature great and suspenseful/haunting music, (And of course great storylines as well - I'm coming to that...) which definately heightened the atmosphere.

But - Just some scary music alone won't make a game. Story is as always, the most important element.
And when it comes to horror, there is one thing that makes a game/film/whatever-story scary - Uncertainty.
That single feeling of knowing that something has/is going to happen, but you don't really know what and when it's going to happen...
It's a sense of hopelessness in a way.

I don't really know if this here, my ramblings makes any sense, but hopefully they did... Feel free to point out my mistakes... :)

Yeah, I agree, the original was a bit too butch and overall un-feminine, so I think Big Brother got a few points with his edit - Especially the way she holds the arms, I'd say. You don't see girls going around holding their arms like that in real life, unless they are holding their breath, ready to enter a battle or something... :)

Dig the other characters, though - Looking forwards to more shots from the game...
(And another thing: Who is that headbanging like a rabid James Hetfield on speed in your signature? I'm curious...)
#412
Oh no - I know it's supposed to be red, but not here it is - It's as grey as my braincells, foo!
#413
Ah, I like this weeks theme - Not just because it's in grayscale, but also because it enables me to draw this:

I'd prefer to spend my weekend in front(or on top of) a stage, listening to good music... Please ignore the bad proportions of the drum set, and awe at the fact that an Gibson SG is the coolest guitar ever. ;)

Hey! Allright - This is something I've been waiting for... Loved the first part, and I have a feeling this definately won't be worse... I mean, Triple Length? That makes my heart jump just like that... :)

Keep on working! Looking forward to playing it!

Hell yeah... ever since you posted that morgue background in the critic's forum, I've been wanting to see more.  Even the title has me curious about it.

Heh, that's nice to hear - I've been working on some more new stuff recently, so keep your eyes open... :)

And, ah , yes - I cannot forgive myself for forgetting Ignac 2 - The trailer was just incredible... Igor, the next step is a full-length animated feature film, me says... :)

#416
Aye, let's see here:

First of all, no one mentioned Byzantine - The most atmosperic AGS demo I've played so far. It truly gave me the creeps... How's it coming along?
Others than that, Pirate Fry 2, Revenants, PB:A, Bad Timing, Evil Night, Monkey Wrench, Leitors Edge(Of course...) Squinky's Sci-fi-thingamabob which he showed stuff from in the Critics Lounge, plus a lot of others which I can't rememeber at the moment...

Jekyll/Hyde:
Glad to see at least someone has noticed my tiny efforts... ;) Hehe...

Edit:
Gnah... I forgot Shadowplay. I am a moron. I will hang myself now.

Critics' Lounge / Old Grimsdyke? Yes, indeed.
Sun 04/01/2004 23:47:34
Hiya and hello to y'all again!

Now, what or who is Old Grimsdyke, you all wonder?
Well, those of you familar with cult horror-picture "Tales from the Crypt" might have heard it before, but if you put the film aside it happens to be a "solo-project" by a buddy, Adam, and myself.
It started out as a silly parody of another local band, but in the end we were so satisfied with the sound, that we started to work a bit more serious on it. In late 2003 we therefore recorded a couple of tracks, and made a short demo - Whcih until now has been pretty unknown to the rest of the world... Until now, that is.

Because from today, you can find the best song from demo(in my opinion, that is...), "Northern Star" available for download here.

The style is acoustic, melancolic pop with some psykedelic influences, and the line-up is Adam Gustafsson on guitar, and meself doing the vocal chores, plus writing the lyrics...
This one is very short, though, so don't expect any epic masterpice...

Just thought I'd post it here to see what all you others say about it, if you like it/hate it/are indifferent about it... :)

Cheers!

Shit, this is really hard for me, since I've started to realize I have far too many favourite games...
But I'm afraid I'll have to say Grim Fandango - It's just so goddamn good... Can't explain it... The storytelling, the characters, the music, the graphics, the voices... You want me to mention more stuff I love about it?

Others that come close are of course GK1, DoTT, MI2 and Discworld Noir.
All of these games have something important in common - They all had an atmosphere that drew me in, and made me longing for more when the game was over. Not every game does that to me. GF was the one that had the biggest influence, though - And therefore it deserves the #1 spot.

Mm... Donuts...

What? Once I start eating them, I can't stop, ok?

Jodo, I don't think anyone wants to point out any personal defects in you, but I think that many(Including myself) finds this whole "Fight-fire-with-fire"-routine more than a bit idiotic. Therefore it might be wise to try and look at things from another view than your own, no? I think that would give you a whole lot more friends around here, to be honest.
