QuoteBy the way, did you know that Skylos means "Dog" in Greek? That's a funny name for a character

Heh, no I actually had no idea! But now that I consider it, this is perfect, since I wanted Skylos Makali to somewhat resemble Indiana Jones. If you're an Indy fan, you'd know Indiana is a dog's name; George Lucas' dog, funny enough! Moreover, in the Indiana Jones movie, you'll hear Shawn Connery make a reference to this when he says: "I like Indiana! We named the dog Indiana!"

Anyway, thanks for the comments. :) I always appreciate it when someone else realizes the true intention of these types of games: keep the past alive, minus the time machine!

I still have screenshots if anybody's interested:

General Discussion / Returning to my game...
Thu 08/09/2005 02:00:26
Ã,  Ã, For a short time, I have deviated from finishing my game, Utopia Prime. Recently, I have decided to finish it, and with the Chris' new additions to AGS, I feel obligated. I have already done so much and I cannot just decide to stop working on it ... similar to training a character in an mmorpg. :P

Ã,  Ã,  If you are unfamiliar with the game lemme just briefly review it for you. You play this guy named Skylos Makali who works for a top secret organization called ISLAM (Investigators of Suspicious Lab Activities threatening Mankind). To determine the status of each lab, Dr. Makali is sent to observe all notable activities and generate a report based on his observations. If the report supports evidence that a lab is indeed threatening mankind, ISLAM has members in affiliation with military leaders who will send armed troops to this lab, forcing them to disengage their activities.Ã,  Anyway, the game starts out on a small island, where Makali enters a lab unlike any he's ever seen before. In it, he encounters a series of strange contraptions that he never could have possibly imagined. Upon finishing his own self-guided tour, he immediately concludes that the entire lab is abandoned ... or so he thinks.

Ã,  Ã,  I hope to share a demo with this community soon. If all goes well, one may be available before November. If you are interested in helping out (in maybe graphics *cough* *cough*), this would be nice, but by no means necessary. I am a busy person and so I rarely have time to work on this game, but when I find time, I use it to work on this game as much as possible. Graphics are always the most time consuming (which is why help would be nice), but the end product is always worth it. I always remind myself: Utopia Prime will be the next classic of postmodern adventure games. And I still believe it.

Ah! Perfect! *excited* I started doing this about ... oh... 1 year ago... if you haven't implemented the title, character, and icons already, I can send you what I've got if you are interested! Thanks!

Hope to hear from you soon...

I appreciate your help, but I pretty much took care of it by making the hotspot an object temporarily.

Advanced Technical Forum / Hotspot baseline?
Thu 24/03/2005 18:48:06
Is there a hotspot baseline? If so, how is it possible to change its position? If not, how would I manage to put a hotspot in front of an object? The object seems to replace the hotspot no matter what I try. Any ideas?

I don't know of any script that could change an object name. Any ideas?

Isotopic Arts proudly presents to you, the first adventure of a man whose life closely resembles that of Indiana Jones and James Bond â€" Skylos Makali in Utopia Prime.

Skylos Makali works for a top secret organization by the name of ISLAM (Investigators of Suspicious Lab Activities which may threaten Mankind.) In Makali's first adventure, ISLAM's radio contact has been lost with a team of scientific researchers experimenting with an artifical society known as "Utopia Prime". The experiment is located on anÃ, unidentified island somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. The Chief Administrator of ISLAM has assigned Makali to investigate all activities on the island in order to discover the reason behind their losing radio-contact and possibly, to uncover a magnificent secret hidden within the boundaries of the Utopia Prime experiment.

Here are some 320x200 (2X) screenshots that may hopefully interest you:

Everything is great so far but I need some help! Isotopic Arts has nobody! One person volunteered but has not responded in over 6 months. Now I need YOUR help to make this happen! Yes YOU! If you choose to help, you will have volunteered in one of the greatest adventure games made in AGS. It will feature dozens of rooms, puzzles, music, sound, animation, effects, YOU NAME IT! But if I don't have your help this may never happen! No matter what though, I can promise you this muchâ€" a demo will be released before the end of summer… at the very least. I've been working on this for over TWO years now, and if I get a team together this could be finished by the end of 2005!

What am I looking for? Somebody to:

1)   Make a webpage.

2)   Make the music.

3)   Help design all the cool puzzles.

4)   Contribute in any way possible.

AND JUST REMEMBER:

((Your Effort + My Effort)/ Total Amount of Effort Necessary for Completion)*100=Completion Percentage

THIS IS GOING TO BE ONE HELL OF AN EFFORT AND I DON'T WANT THAT EFFORT TO COME 100% FROM ME BECAUSE THIS COULD BE HELLA FUN TO MAKE AS A TEAM! ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANKS-A-BILLION!

Very, very nice!! I only hope that unexpected things happen .... ya know, like uhh... a co-worker pulls a practical joke or you find out your girlfriend is cheating on you.... but not everyday just sometimes... I think the formula for each unexpected events is:

the higher the degree of intensity is for an event, the lower the frequency must be set for that event.

Yeah, anyway, that's just my two-cents.

wow, it's actually better than I thought it would be. great job! ...still playing...

very good work... i'm very impressed w/ the graphics too. i haven't beaten the game yet but i just wanted to point one thing-- the menu could be worked on a little bit... idunno i just thought some of the colors didn't look right (maybe it's just my monitor)... anyway. except for that everything looks peachy. Nice job!

Advanced Technical Forum / Two issues...
Sun 12/12/2004 10:31:59
I recently came upon two issues that I thought were simple but ended up being (oh hey larry vales smiley... lol... sorry... get distracted easily)...Ã,  anyway, it ended up being a wee bit harder than I expected. So, to make a long story short, here's the problem I found out in the end:

How do I convert strings to characters?... in AGS, that is, because I know how to anywhere else, lol

AND

How do make the speech text ALWAYS appear in front? It doesn't appear in front when there is a GUI blocking it.

BTW, the reason I wanted to convert characters to strings is so I could capitalize the first letter of any string. Why? Well, because I feel is important knowledge (plus it'll clean up my game a bit)...

Any input would be really cool.... thanks!
